“Clean and amazing value. Not like a traditional hostel at all”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2010

This was the my third stay at the Secret Garden hostel and it is has never disappointed me. Do not be put off by the word hostel. It did not feel like one to me but then again, I always stay in a private room. Rooms are colourful and themed. Bathroom facilities are shared but they are always clean and I have never had to wait to take shower.

You can make tea, coffee or hot chocolate at any time in the communal kitchen which was great during the cold Polish winters. Breakfast is included in the price and you can help yourself to various breads, processed cheese slices, meats, jam, yoghurt and chocolate spread.

The hotel is situated a few trams stops from the centre of Krakow and it is only a 2 minute walk from the tram stop. Lots of cheap restaurants nearby plus a bargain "milk bar" nearby if you are feeling confident with your Polish. The hostel gets booked up really quick during the Spring or Summer so book now to avoid disappointment. I know because I could not book some dates in April.

Visted Krakow in January 2010. Stayed here and loved it, already planning a return trip. The hostel was spotlessly clean, rooms were comfortable, this is a hostel remember so they are not luxurious but clean, big enough, comfy beds, smelled beautifully (the rooms all have a theme and we stayed in the Clockwork Orange room - which am sure you guessed smelt of oranges!

Our corridor had 4 rooms in it and 3 giant bathrooms. There was never an issue using the bathrooms (which like the rest of the place were spotless) toilets and showers were in separate rooms inside them so there was never an issue having to wait.

The free breakfast was yummy, meats, cheeses, breads, jams, yogurts etc. It was always being restocked so even when we got their later one morning there was still plenty to be had. You could also make tea and coffee whenever you wanted which was fantastic given when we were there it was minus 25 one of the days and after being out all day needed warming up.

The location was great much preferred the Jewish Quarter to the Old Town, the bars and resturants a short walk away were wonderful, delicious, cheap etc and didn't see one stag party down there - only saw a couple in the Old Town which is about a 15 min walk away.

Staff spoke very good English and were very helpful with bus times and how to get places and booking trips.

This is one of the nicer hostels I've stayed at. My room and all public areas were kept very clean, including the shared bathroom, which was spotless every time I used it. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. I also appreciated the free internet they provided (not sure if they had wireless but they had two computers for anyone to use). The neighborhood is okay, within easy reach of anything you want to see. This is a very good hostel for anyone traveling on a budget.

The cleanest hostel I ve ever been to, modern style
but plasant. Friendly English-speaking staff,
unusually many possibilities for free internet
and extremely well-organized, plentiful bathrooms.
Had a single room in reality a double, with shared
bathrooms.
The Kazimierz district is interesting itself. The Ethnographic
Museum is right across on the square: visit it for its
nice collection of folklore and local dress, it s a small jewel.
Plenty of eating possibilities and shops nearby, in spite
of that it is not in the centre.

Booked after reading so many great and justified reviews. Stayed four nights in a private double room - not ensuite, but the bathroom immediately across the hall felt private and was always clean. The room was big enough for two and the bed was deceptively comfortable. Only thing was the wardrobe didn't open properly (odd shaped space), and that the blanket wasn't double in size (you were given two single-ish blankets on the bed). However, towels were included which was quite handy.

Stayed in 'Vanilla Sky' - which did smell like vanilla. I can only wonder if the other themed rooms had matching scents?

The Secret Garden is located in the old Jewish Quarter, about 15 minutes on foot from the main streets. Location is quiet; you are in good wandering space (architecture, markets); you're around the corner from a few bakeries (open before you'd think about being up), banks, corner shops; and on the way into town, you pass the Castle and a good many cafes and varied places to eat.

Breakfast was included (self-service) which was traditionally European - coffee, toast, cold salamis, tomato, cucumber, yoghurt, various cheeses, and a variety of cereals. You won't go hungry in this city or hostel. Kitchen was pretty much always open, but for price and options, you're not likely to need it very often.

At the time of visit, it wasn't overrun with stag parties (something most people might expect?). There was one group from the UK that we saw at breakfast after a big night, but the open layout and roominess of the hostel gave everyone enough space, and they by no means made any noise impact in our quarters (the dorms were on upper levels and generally away from the doubles).

The TV room had two PCs with free internet. Windows in Polish still lets you get most tasks done, but the drives didn't allow us to burn anything to CD.

Reception was always helpful, and generally, friendliness depended on the person at the desk. They do have a service to launder your dirties, should you run out of undies, for a small and reasonable fee. Not sure if there are facilities for you to do this yourself though.

Overall, felt safe, clean and welcome. A great base to enjoy a wonderful city. The only disappointment is not staying long enough. Highly recommended and would book again when we return.

Stayed at this place at the start of a round the world trip so didn't want to spend too much money, but as I was with my girlfriend wanted somewhere clean and safe.

This fitted the bill perfectly, shared toilet and shower facilities were nice and close to rooms, beds were a bit low, but rooms were clean and spacious enough, with some storage.

Breakfast was basic but nice and served in a clean and bright area. Staff were friendly and spoke good English, location was good for sightseeing and as out of the centre a little way made the price cheaper.

The area felt safe enough to walk around at night.

All in all a great place for couples on a budget, light, clean and safe. A really good solid hostel that you won't regret picking.
