“Brilliant Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

Just returned from a short break in Krakow and stayed at the Grand Hotel which was indeed Grand in every way. Dealt with staff by email prior to the trip and they were prompt and efficient in their replies which is always a good sign.

Upon our arrival the girl at reception was excellent. Swift check in and told us that we had been given an executive room which was actually a suite. Room was superb and the furnishings fitted in with the general demeanour of the hotel.

Breakfast was good with a wide selection of foods. Only issue I had was that the sausage and bacon had gone cold and the chef's definition of an omlette was not the same as my wife's. That apart no one would leave hungry.

When we asked about trips again the reception staff went out of their way with advice and made the necessary arrangements and even added the cost to the bill.

Hotel is ideally placed for the main square and surrounding areas. The only issue is the possibility of noise which is basically outwith the hotel's control. If you have a low room overlooking the street then there may well be an issue at times with over zealous revellers being inconsiderate of others.

I would have no hesitation in recomending this hotel to anyone considering a break in Krakow.

Room Tip: Try and stay higher up especially at weekends. That way there may be less street noise.

First of all you can't beat the location, only a couple of minutes walk to the square and plenty of restaurants/bars within spitting distance!

For a 5* hotel the entrance off the street is very unremarkable; blink and you'll miss it, however inside you'll be met with a grandeur from days gone by. I have to thank the head receptionist for allowing us to amend our non-changeable booking and recognising me on check-in - much appreciated. Check-in was quick and the main areas of attraction pointed out to us on a map as it was our first visit to Krakow and we received a complimentary copy of "Krakow in Your Pocket"

We were in room 41B, a fairly spacious double room with free Wi-Fi and A/C and overlooking the rear/courtyard of the hotel so although no view it was very quiet (we'd requested a quiet room in advance). The 6' bed was comfy with 2 separate duvets and there was a free in-room digital safe. Breakfast was ok with a chef cooking eggs/omelettes over a burner but one morning there was a bit of a wait for them. All staff we met were very pleasant and the rooms and public areas/toilets were spotlessly clean.

However there were a few downsides and I cannot understand how the hotel has a 5* status because of them.

1. Bathroom was tiny, no bath just a small shower cubicle with appalling shower pressure and wildly fluctuating temperatures no matter what time during our 3 night stay we used it. Room was so small there wasn't even enough room for a towel rail! There was no ventilation or extractor fan or heated mirror so we had to shower with the bathroom door open.

2. Very limited hanging space in narrow wardrobe and only 2 drawers (and they were in the bedside cabinets).

3. No kettle or coffee making facilities.

4. Flat screen TV but only English channels were CNN and a French (!) one.

5. Curtains were paper thin which meant room was bathed in sunlight from 4:30am

6. Hairdryer supplied was one of the those 200w ones fixed to the bathroom wall on a hose, neither use nor ornament!

Some of the above negatives we knew about before we booked but it's only fair to point them out and to say that Polish 5* standards may not be the same as in other countries, however they did not detract from a very pleasant stay in a beautiful city and we felt the stay was good value for the price we paid.

I suspect that the Grand Hotel is the 'Claridges' of Krakow. The reception staff particularly Magdalena were fantastic, being able to cater to a wide variety of requests and always with a smile. They could not do enough for my Mum and I on our 6 night stay.

Krakow is amazing and this was compounded by a first class hotel and it is encouraging to see such polite staff and attentiveness. The doormen were most obliging as were the restaurant staff. The buffet breakfast was good and my sticking point is the earl grey tea but even that was superb.

We were upgraded to a junior suite- I specifically requested a room without a view, for fear of overspill of noise from the Main square. The rooms were wonderfully clean, beautifully decorated and lovely to return to each day.

The hotel is so central and you can choose from an amazinfg array of restaurants. By chance the bakers next door- Zaberovsky and the ice cream shop 10-15 doors down on the right of Krakow were 2 of the top in the city. A foodies dream. As were my 2 favourite restaurants- 3 steps to Madness (transltaed from Polish) and Resto Illuminati.

My Mum and I were greeted, each day after a weary day of sightseeing in 37 deg C, with smiles and laughter.

All I can say is many many thanks for making our first holiday together for a while, perfect. If only all hotels in the world had your standards.

Room Tip: Avoid the rpoms with a view, they are quiter

The Grand Hotel is a reminder of the elegance of hotels in the late nineteenth century. It is ideally located for historic Krakow and not far from the train station and the tram system.
Our fourth floor room was spacious, comfortable and well appointed with items such as flat screen tv. The bathroom was modern with up to date fittings, though on the compact side. Downside to the hotel's location could be late night noise from nearby bars and clubs, light sleepers might need to check their room's location on reservation. The windows were double-glazed.The hotel is on a corner site, both streets are not traffic heavy, but close to late night bars. The weather during our stay was not particularly hot, so we did not need a/c but we did try it and it seemed a bit limp.
Public areas reflected the hotel's nineteenth century originality with decoration seemingly kept to a high standard.
Throughout the staff were excellent, attentive, spoke good to very good English and always helpful, especially the reception staff who made phone calls on our behalf for concerts and opera arrangements. They even, on my request, spent sometime marking my town plan with my particular points to visit.
The restaurant menu had a limited choice but provided welcome versions of the usual local specialities. Service was good.
Overall, we would not hesitate to stay there again on visits to Krakow.

Room Tip: Light sleepers check for position of room for street noise.

We had a fabulous 4 days in Krakow. The Hotel is in a perfect location.. a few minutes walk from the beautiful square.
The staff are absolutely excellent. Always charming and smiling they couldn't be more helpful. They helped us to book concerts (Which are a MUST) There are concerts in various beautiful churches on most days.
Very good breakfasts, eggs cooked to order and just about anything else you could wish for. The breakfast room was a bit small for the amount of people using it and some guests had to be relocated to the main dining room.
The only downside (and this is why I dropped 1 star) is that they don't cater very well for the disabled traveller. My husband doesn't walk very well and had to negotiate 3 flights of stairs to the public toilets. ( We had checked out so couldn't use our room facilities) This was very painful for him. Also, there were no ramps at the entrance doors so this made life difficult getting his scooter in and out of the Hotel, although the staff were very helpful when they were around.
I think in general Poland isn't quite up to speed catering for the disabled traveller.
Our room was charming and very clean. We didn't experience any problem from noise as reported by MPG47.
Krakow is just stunning, the people are so friendly, it was a pleasure to go there. LOVE IT !

Room Tip: I emailed the Hotel and requested a quiet room

In late May, as part of a tour, my wifw and I spent four days at the Grand. The upside is the location of the hotel, ablock from the Old City. The staff is very nice and most helpful. The rooms were nice including several stations of English langugae television. The breakfast was abundant and tasty.

The downside is the necessity to avoid rooms facing the street. The street noise made it difficult for my wife to sleep but the staff was willing to allow us a rooom change and we slept well. . Finally certain parts of the third floor require using two different elevators.

In sum we enjoyed our stay and would use it again.

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms facing the street.

This hotel is in an excellent location in krakow.
The staff are by far the friendliest and attentive that my wife and i have met on our travels over many years.
After a days travelling to be greeted with a smile and kind word from the ladies at the front desk and a helping hand from the door men means everything.
Check in and check out brilliant.
The lady who checked us out explained everything in great detail..which on a day of travelling is a great help indeed.
The breakfast at the grand hotel cannot be beat, A chef that will make you a great omelette,, please try it and the girls are so professional making sure all is well.

The hotel has old style layout which was what we wanted it has a beautiful staircase and great windows and plants

Our room was great with plenty of space, mini bar, safe,bathrobe/slippers and bathroom excellently stocked

We see from other reviews that noise is a serious issue, well for us no because we closed the windows and turned on the air conditining.
The beds are comfortable.

We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for us it had it all wonderful location great and friendly staff who genuinely care.

One day when we came back our room had not been attended to but after a friendly word at the desk all was looked after immediately.

We were able to book our tours and airport transfer through the hotel also.

We will again visit krakow and in doing so we will stay in the grand hotel

Gerry.
