“Worth £40 a night no more..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

If you are on a budget and don't mind the possibility of a bad night's sleep this is the place for you. Renovation works from 7am to 9pm mean constant noise early in the morning and into the night. Our room was nice apart from the broken shower door and a plug hole full of (someone else's) hair. Icing on the cake was 50 plus teenage American students booking in presumably for a school trip to Auschwitz. Noise into the early hours followed, people running down corridors, banging on doors, music blaring from rooms and kids shouting.
On the plus side the old boy that prepared a hearty breakfast was nice - we tipped him.

Room Tip: Ask if any school parties are staying or if any building works are taking place.

My partner and myself stayed here Feb 23rd to Feb 26th 2013, hotel dated and need of modernisation but maybe the owners prefer this type of 'charm' ? Excellent location, just across the square from the railway station and five mins walk to the main square, we had bed and breakfast only, food was more or less the same each morning, ham, cheese, bread rolls etc, if you like fried eggs you have to ask for them, we found this out on the last morning !
Staff were sort of helpful, got an hello and a goodbye but nothing else more, we were fine with this.
We used all the local transprt to go to the salt mines and Austwizch, very cheap, if you get on a bus you can buy your ticket either at the bus stand or on the bus itself but you have to 'validate' it as well at a seperate machine on the bus, easy to do,we also found the info desk at the railway station very helpful.
At Austwizch you don't have to pay to go in but we wanted a guided tour ( English speaking ) and it cost us 40 Zlotys each ( approx £8 each ), well worth the money, if you go to Poland you have to visit Austwizch.
Would we go back to Poland ? Yes Would we stop at the Polonia ? Don't think so, would prob go for a bit more modern hotel, we stopped in room 50 which overlooked the square, the tram and car noise didn't bother us one bit, bed was really comfy just that the hotel seemed to be very 'dated', but all in all we had a nice long weekend

When entering through to front door, you may feel the atmosphere of an old, classic hotel. Four meters to the ceiling, wooden floors, wallpaper and tapestry. You may even smell the atmosphere here and there..

The rooms (at least on 1st floor) are relatively newly renovated including the bathrooms, even though a bit minimalistic when it comes to bathroom furniture and no extra heating. In contrast to many other Polish 3-star hotels, they have installed at flat screen TV with one German channel in addition to all the Polish.

Some guests have complained about “thin walls” and noise from neighbours. The main problem seems to be the thin wooden doors towards the corridor. Be also aware that the Ul. Bastowa is a main street with lots of traffic and a tram line, but rooms facing the back yard are very quiet – so your choice: View of Old Town or a good sleep!

The staff is friendly and speak adequate good English. The breakfast (extra) is standard Polish buffet with a good selection of sausages, scrambled eggs, ham, cheese, tomatoes etc.
Best of all is the location: Five minutes’ walk to the railway station and airport express train, and just across the street into Old Town!

Room Tip: Be also aware that the Ul. Bastowa is a main street with lots of traffic and a tram line, but rooms...

Close to the station and the main old streets this hotel offers a quaint charm. An old building with high ceilings, large windows, sweeping stair case and classic pre modern interiors. Attempts at updating furniture let this establishment down. Original bedroom decor needs to replace modern pine.

The biggest advantage of the hotel is its location but you can get plenty of other (even much better) places in the very center.
What is shameful is that the staff is "friendly" if you are generous with them...
It also looks like they don't have enough people as you wait ages to talk to anybody, to get your meals etc.
And the meals are not of a proper standard (either cold or small portions or low quality food etc.).
Anyway, I found a better place and do not recommend this one.

The hotel is beautiful. The staff spoke english and they were nice enough. They prepared my breakfast in a bag because my train was leaving before the opening hours of the cafeteria. But what ruined everything is those paper walls. Not the wallpaper. The "paper walls." I feel like I shared my room with another group talking and laughing until 1am and I didn't sleep.

So don't sneeze. The walls would tear down.

Just back from a three-day trip to Krakow where we stayed at the Hotel Polonia. In brief - if I go back to Krakow this is where I'll stay. It has the perfect location, it's spotless and the staff are exceptionally friendly. The rooms are basic but you get what you pay for and the prices are amazing considering the location. The breakfast is the usual Polish fare - not my cup of tea but my partner loved it. If you're a light sleeper, and I'm not so I slept like a log, you might want to stay somwehere else because the tram line runs outside the window. But, hey! I loved it and I'll be looking forward to going back and staying there.
