Have just got back from Krakow with a friend and cannot recommend Phil Clark enough. Every other review on here, about him and his company, is spot on. Communication brilliant, prompt and informative, transfers to and from the airport were also booked through Phil and worked like clockwork as did all the pick ups etc regarding the trips.
We were in a small group of six that went to Birkenau first with Phil; surprisingly, we were the only ones there and the (unusually warm for the time of year!) weather really made the day. We watched a DVD on the way there which gave us a real insight into what lay ahead, still a shock with everything we have already heard about the Holocaust. Phil walked round Birkenau with us at a very leisurely pace, answering every single question we had as well as offering loads of detail on top. There wasn't a single question he couldn't answer. My friend and I also booked the packed lunch with him which was lovely and very good value for money - we couldn't eat it all! Auschwitz was next where Phil dropped us off after explaining the layout of the camp and what each of the buildings contained. He gave us as much time as we needed to walk around. There were a lot of organised tours there (quite big groups) where you would of course be given lots of extra information, but we didn't feel we were disadvantaged by going around on our own, and besides, and questions we had were answered by Phil when he picked us up! When we booked the trip before arriving in Poland we weren't able to book Auschwitz and the salt mines together on the same day - we did the SM's the following day, which I would actually recommend as it made it a more pleasurable experience in terms of time - we had as long as we wanted at Auschwitz because we didn't have to rush off to the SM's. It is of course more money because it is two trips on separate days, but the people we saw who had done Auschwitz and the Salt Mines on the same day were absolutely worn out! Plus, both trips are very reasonably priced (paying for two separate trips they still only worked out at around £65 pp) On the day of the SM trip my friend and I went to the Oskar Schindler Factory first from where Phil picked us up, and he took us on a little detour when we asked if any of the ghetto walls were still standing. We then went to the SM's and were later dropped off in the Krakow square. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The Salt Mines were amazing - but you have to go down LOTS of stairs and then are brought back to the top in a tiny lift - beware if you are severely claustrophobic, there are no warning signs anywhere that I could see warning about the steps etc. They do accommodate wheelchairs but a different route is taken.
After this trip, I would not even think about booking with anyone but Phil! He made the trips and our stay a fantastic experience all round. Thanks Phil!!
