Hmmm…this was one of the times when I should have gone back and read ALL the comments and less favourable reviews about Old City Apartments rather than relying on the overall star rating on Trip Advisor (and, please, fellow-travellers, don’t give a place or company four or five stars when you have obviously had issues with quality and service!!). In short, we would never again deal with and never recommend this company to anyone! The longer version: we booked and stayed four nights in the DOMINIKANSKI 5 apartment, which overlooks quite a busy, but character-filled square and, is, in fact a reasonably clean, reasonably-sized studio apartment that has some really good aspects, such as stable, free WiFi, good hot water, a working washing machine and the basic equipment in the functional kitchenette to self-cater. Unfortunately, there are a few aspects that make it less appealing and the complete absence of any action at all by the management in response to our numerous contacts with them was very disappointing…not to mention that they insisted we pick up the key from their office instead of meeting us at the apartment (which, from our three-month experience with apartments across Europe, is very unusual); then they wanted us to pay the balance for our total stay without having even seen the apartment (we refused and left a 50 zloty deposit for the key, instead). Our initial inspection of the apartment revealed that the famous old lift that their web-page states “sometimes” doesn’t work, wasn’t working at all (and, it turns out, it hasn’t worked for sometime – apparently since another guest got themselves stuck in it for several hours). Nevertheless, as the apartment was only one floor up, we agreed to take it and paid the money. Sadly, our inspection wasn’t as thorough as it should have been and we failed to notice that there was not one double bed as advertised but two beds pushed together (both with stained mattresses); we also didn’t realize that the pillows were so small, that the apartment was really hot and stuffy when the windows were closed (essential at night as the square can get very noisy) and that there was no fan…or that the electronic cooker was very temperamental – choosing to "touch-start" sometimes and others not. As soon as we realized these issues (later the same day), we emailed Only Apartments, asked if we could get more pillows and a small free-standing fan and for someone to show us how to work the cooker properly. I repeated this request twice after not receiving a response but never heard back from them, Strangely enough, the day before we were due to leave, when I sent another email asking if we could get a late check-out as we couldn’t get a train to Gdansk until the following evening, we received a response within an hour…of course asking for another day’s rent!! We replied that we would come around and pay it the next afternoon but almost exactly at midday the next day, someone came banging on the apartment door asking for the money!! Our impression was that this company do not care one bit about providing customer service – as soon as they get their money, they abdicate any responsibility for the well-being and comfort of their guests. It’s a shame because, with just a few small changes, it could have been a really pleasant stay with a very different outcome and rating from us. The apartment gets three-stars, management gets minus one-star...overall: two-stars. Just don’t deal with this company...there are many other genuine people out there who deserve your custom!
