“Quantity over quality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Been there 2 times, last one in Feb 2013 and had exactly same impressions.

This may be a good place to have a feast with friends - with lots of food, beer etc. However when it comes to the quality and taste of food, is is clearly visible that quantity comes first here. Portions are super generous - ribs can be easily shared by two ladies, pork chop has a size of pizza, chicken is in fact half of the whole chicken. For me - even a slightly too generous, lots of food is wasted and if you eat it all, there's no place for dessert left.

The place is busy and this is visible in quality of service. Waiters are always in a rush and you can feel the nervoussness when you enquire more about menu. Once food is served you are nearly forgotten - you wait long to clean the table or be given the bill. The live music played on some evenings is great.

To sum up, I would somehow recommend this place for big get togethers with friends, when taste of food is not the most important. I would NOT recommend this place in case you want to eat well. Restaurant is good value for money when you compare the price to amount of food you receive. However, for bill with similar amount you can eat a better, smaller dinner elsewhere.

“OMG- The Pierogies!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

This is a MUST visit restaurant right across from Wawel Castle. We went twice because the food was so good! The pierogies were very reasonably prices at about $5.00 USD for about 10. They fry their pierogies. Many places in Poland boil them. The shnitzel was so big is covered the plate. The flavors and food was just off the hook. They also serve beer in the big beer steins that was neat to see.

“Love love love it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

We've been 4 times during 2 trips to Krakow and each time was wonderful. Great staff, great setting, great beer, great food, great vodka, great atmosphere. Just absolutely awesome. HUGE portions of food and beer. I would definitely recommend the bread filled with meat stew, divine! We would return to Krakow just for dinner here and then come back home!

“Food a litttle bit disappointing regarding the EXCELLENT SERVICE, LOCATION, ATMOSPHERE”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

We went to Pod Wawelem to enjoy the probably best of this "bohemian" atmosphere of the former Austrian-Hungarian provinces, the "GALICIAN FEELING".
We were not disapointed.
GENERAL SETTING - The restaurant is set in the style of these bavarian or austrian Bierhaus, where the food is good, in big portions, rustical. And indeed, this is the only place in Krakow (as for my knowledge) where you can get the "Mass", the 1 Liter beer glass. Being set at the foot of the Royal Castle, Wawel, and in the parc circiling hte old town, Planty, the restaurant is at one of the best locations in town.
FOOD RATING - one of my big Polish favorite is the "Golonka", a pickled knuckle of pork. I tried a fair few of them when I lived in Krakow for 5 years, or at many other occasions. Pod Wawelem's roasted golonka is from far the best I ever had. Crunchy crust, tender inside. A delice..
BUT.... as read in many other review here or other sites, the Golonka seems to be the only really good thing there. My wife got a traditional sausage which we did not really enjoy, being used to much higher "sausage standards" in Poland. The French fries were soft, the vegatables absolutely nothing special. So, the general rating of the food is average.
EXCELLENT SERVICE of quick, efficient, friendly, proactive staff.
AVERAGE VALUE - the price level is diffficult to rate, as the golonka is excellent, the beers good, the portions huge. But what is the use of such portions if you won't really enjoy them?
We paid just around 110 zloty for all, including the 1000g golonka, what is just above 25 EUR (!!)
LEGENDARY TOILETS - don't miss a walk through the toilets to check out the funny signs over each pissoir, including the "vomiting bucket" - pictures attached :)
DOGGY BAG - as the portions are so huge, the staff is happy to pack remainders for you. We packed only half of the golonka, and enjoyed a nice "picknick" at home the next day, after we heated it in the oven and aused the sweet mustard packed by the restaurant staff

If you are looking large portions and cheap food then this is the place for you, if you are looking quality food then maybe try somewhere else, its not that the food is really bad but most of our meals where cold, glad we tried here just wouldnt hurry back..
