“Castle on the Sea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

I attended a wedding here in June and was blown away by the sheer beauty of this property. The food, service, views were absolutely extraordinary! Although this is an older property and could use a bit of updating, you can really see and feel the history. Our visit was for three nights and we enjoyed every one of them. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Everyone spoke at least enough English to get by which was unexpected and very nice. The outdoor pool is very nice and definitely a very nice touch to the property. The buffet breakfast is absolutely over the top! So much to choose from and all very good quality. It's a nice getaway from the city life and I would definitely recommend this hotel for a wedding or a mini break vacation.

Room Tip: The top loft suite has a lot of stairs to hike but is worth it for the spacious apartment style room...

This was our third time in this hotel, the last time being in 2004. Unfortunately, the rooms have deteriorated: peeling wallpaper, stained carpets. The location is great, right on the beach, and it is a beautiful historic property. The public areas are well kept up with lots of dark wood paneling, and very inviting. The view and location are great, and it is definitely the best-situated hotel in this area. Our stay included breakfast and dinner. The food was wonderfully prepared and plentiful. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Would stay here again if they upgrade the guest rooms.

The hotel has seen it's best days and some renovation should be done (you can also have an old hotel in a perfect old-style condition...). The room carpets are full of spots and do not look inviting. The pool-beds are made of plastic (in an antique hotel you could use wood...and not cheap plastic!)
It could be such a perfect hotel, if the hotel-management would care more...
I think they do not care in general:
We made a reservation for a room with terrace and sea view. They confirmed it to us 2 days before staying at the hotel. When we arrived, there was only a room without terrace and without sea view. First the staff told us, that they never mentioned a terrace and sea view. After we could proof it with a document, they admitted, that it was their fault and said they are sorry - but they could only offer this room without terrace and view (and now the problem was solved for them!!!).
After a long discussion and many phone calls they reduced the price for the room on our request.
The dinner was a desaster:
You can choose between 2 menus - nearly nothing is really a polish dish, only international dishes. And the quality is very poor and many parts are convenience food and poorly seasoned (and this in a hotel, where a room costs around 300 US$! at this time a year).
I would not criticise anything, if the room-rate is around 100 US$...
Also the waiters did not care much about the guests and if they like it or not - it was like in a fastfood-restaurant.
There is a wlan, but it is extremly slow (and Skype mostly impossible at all).
The breakfast on the other hand was a highlight (even if there was no fresh squeezed orange juice - and the breakfast starts very late: 08:00).
But the dishes were excellent and creative (and polish!), with a very good quality. It was a perfect start for the day! What a contrast to the poor dinner...
Most of my critics are about the relation for what you get and what you pay for the room - way to high!!!! I hope the management will improve and the prices go down - then it could be a gem!

+ves - I really liked this hotel - it was an amazing getaway - very restful and relaxing. The location on the Baltic Sea is spectacular. This historic hotel has an amazing ambience, feels like a great old place, but the rooms are modern and comfortable. Great breakfast buffet, and great dinner menu. Some of the best meals I've had in Poland. The bicycles that are available were a great way to see Leba, and to cycle to the park and sand dune.

-ves The staff are uneven. Some are excellent, but some of the front desk are not overly friendly or helpful (though this may have been a language barrier) A few odd things happened during the dinner service - after eating dinner I asked to order dessert, but they said the kitchen was now closed. They could have warned me about this when I sat down - especially at a restaurant at this price point. On another evening, I arrived at 9:30 pm (I was told that the restaurant closed at 10pm) and again was told the kitchen was closed. I finally persuaded them to serve me a bowl of soup. **BUT the above points are minor in light of the overall experience, I would stay here again.

Room Tip: I believe most of the rooms face the sea - but you really want to make sure that this is the case...

We stayed here in June 2010 and also a few years earlier, and found this has everything you wish for in a luxury hotel. At 850 zloty per night including dinner and breakfast, a bit more than 200 euro, this is topclass for Poland, where working class people earn around 700 euro per month. It will come as no surprise that the majority of tourists here are not from Poland.

The castle sits right on the beach of Leba, a small village now swallowed by tourism, where little of interest can be found. The building is roughly a hundred years old, with balconies looking out unto the sea and a swimmingpool on the side. The beach can get crowded in summer, so it is helpful that the sloping part of the beach right in front of the hotel is reserved for guests, with barservice, deckchairs and towels provided on site.

A terrace adjoining the bar, also with seaview, is a fantastic place for lunch, cocktails and dinner, offering fresh food and superb desserts. In summer dinner is included in the roomprice, and the downside to this is that you can not eat a la carte and dinner is served from 5 to 7, a ridiculous set-up because you will miss the sunset that drives so many people to this place.

Breakfast however is the most lavish feast I have ever witnessed. Heaps of forest strawberries, a huge selection of cheese and coldcuts, fresh smoothies and every other item you could wish for are provided. The delicious nalesniki, the Polish variation of crepes, can be ordered from the kitchen.

Rooms are roomy and well turned out in an English country style and clean, though the bathrooms are slightly smaller than you would expect. Parking is free and even a sublime carwash is offered, if you have enjoyed a muddy ride.

The only huddle is the reservation. You will have to pay a percentage in advance and will get a bookingconfirmation in Polish only. The discounts on site are somehow never valid. But the most - but I assure you, only- irritation is the fact that both times we stayed there we had to change rooms to accomodate other guests, although our booking had been confirmed at least three months before arrival.

Anyway, this is one of the best hotels I have ever been to. Enjoy!

Stunning building which has been restored and modernized to a high standard. Superb location right on the beach, which is ideal for an old fashioned beach holiday.

Comfortable and old world refined style; a real achievement by the owners.

So why the OK rating; which in many ways should be excellent.

Noise, the pine woods are full of campsites with amplified entertainment. Not the hotels fault, but defeated the concept of a relaxing holiday.

Terrible service, waiting 45 minutes on several occasions to place your order (others experiencing the same) is terrible. Apparently the trained staff have gone to the UK, but the management made no attempt to deal with this, and dealt with complaint by ignoring us; not very business like.

In conclusion it felt we were paying by local standards far to much for the service we received. Possibly some people accept this due to a certain elitist sense of style which can by some excuse what to me is just poor service.

The adjacent national park is magic.

  • Liked — Location, excellent cleaning staff
  • Disliked — Terrible restaurant service; noise in vicinity, lack of management.
  • Tips/Secrets — Great location if service fixed, would be a fantastic out of season quite romantic hotel.
