“Wanted to like it, but wouldn't stay again.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2011

We spent two nights at this hostel. The reception for the “de’luxe” building is actually across the street at the Happy Seven, the more hostel-like of the two locations offering only dorms. The de’luxe building is in fact much more like a hotel, everything is very new, the washrooms very clean. We did not choose an en suite bathroom and so we very happy that the shower was clean and tidy and no waiting for your turn was required. As our bedroom was situated next to a washroom and looking out over the street we were able to hear a lot of noise. In terms of street noise we could hear voices and vehicles passing (despite it not being a busy street) and we could hear a lot of sounds coming from the bathroom, including the delicate sounds of the door being locked and the light switch being turned on – I probably don’t need to elaborate on the extent of other noises you are able to hear. As a result of the noise here I would not stay again. Perhaps if you can request a room facing away from the street and not next to the bathroom it would be much more comfortable. To make things worse, as of September 6th and 7th there was considerable construction going on within an adjoining building. On our first morning we were woken up at 7:30am by a jack hammer that was causing the whole building to reverberate. At breakfast it was actually difficult to make yourself heard for the noise of the jack hammer, it was laughable it was so loud. On the next morning we were awoken by a chain saw/band saw or something similar. When we checked out there was no acknowledgement of the construction noise disruption going on, but it would have been a kind gesture had they offered a reduction for the disturbance their guests needed to endure.

Finally, the breakfast was included. This consisted of bread, cheese, ham, tomatoes, butter, cheese spreads, jams and instant coffee. It was fairly average, but nice to have the option included at any rate.

Room Tip: Away from the street, and not near a bathroom if you want to be able to sleep.
