“Polish museums are the best in Europe!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

After visiting both The Warsaw Rising museum in Warsaw and Oskar Schindler's Factory in Krakow, two museums with similar style, me and my partner had rather high expectations for The Roads to Freedom Exhibition. And we were not disappointed. This exhibition has everything you could ask for, it is modern, thought-provoking, current (there was a section on the Arabic spring) and when it comes to craftsmanship, full of carefully constructed details.

The only minus is that the exhibition is really small and I cannot see that anyone would need more than an hour to walk around the place. That might change because we observed the building of a new European Solidarity Center Museum which I'm guessing will hold both this exhibit and others. The exhibition is now located near the offices of Solidarność, the entrance is beside a really small brick tower with some steps that will take you underground. The new spot for the museum is close to the Gdansk shipyard and the monument Pomnik Poległych Stoczniowców 1970. We are keen to return when this build is completed!

“You will walk past the entrance.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

Everyone must miss it. Even with extra markings on the path, an armoured car parked by the entrance and big signs. The signpost seems to be telling you to cross the road, but there are barriers and a big road, so you think someones been playing with the sign.

So here's the trick! It's underground. You can't see the steps down because a ventilation tower hides them. Trust the sign, and you will see what I mean.

It's a thought provoking exhibition, especially if you aren't familiar with how recently and how fast things have changed in Eastern Europe. Some guide books say it's free on Wednesdays, but it seems it's now just a reduced fee instead.

“AN EXCELLENT MUSEUM”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

This museum uses computers, tv footage, wall displays, lifelike scenes to depict life in Gdansk from the end of WW2 until the fall of Communism. It was an incredibly powerful and emotive exhibition and I stayed far longer than I usually would do. I gained so much information which will remain in my memory due to the way it was put forward. It is a must if you are visiting Gdansk.

“Unusual and a must see.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2012

Much better than a normal museum. It is a great reminder as to what went on behind the iron curtain. It was only just over a pound entrance so well worth it.
