“Wonderful stay in Prague”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2014

We wondered what to expect when walking down the street in the dark, but as soon as we stepped through the door the welcome was amazing. Vicky, on reception, gave us as much help as we wanted on things to see and where to go, as well as a drink while we talked. The room was very cleverly decorated to follow the theme of a general, as are all the rooms - very original and very well done.
The staff could not have been more helpful and cheerful. From the doormen to Ibrahim and Rami, who were on breakfast during our stay, all were the model of professionalism with a smile. The breakfast was everything we needed and more - all excellent.
The location was great - we walked nearly everywhere, up to the castle,, into the old town and, on Vicky's recommendation, to the art museum to see Mucha's Slav Epic - amazing!
We left the Hotel General with the feeling that we had just stayed at a superb hotel that was out of the ordinary and will be well worth another visit.

Room Tip: Our room looked into the courtyard behind the hotel and was very quiet. The rooms on the road side m...

I booked a stay in Prague to celebrate my wife's 70th. birthday over the New Year.
The hotel is well appointed and is decorated in a baroque style. The welcome and introduction was superb, and overall the staff were very attentive and helpful.
We had a junior suite which had plenty of room and all the expected additions.
Breakfast was more than adequate and again the staff were excellent. We did not take any other meals here.
The hotel is set in what is described as the 'business' district, slightly away from the toruist area. Some of the surrounding area is a bit grey, but the district is obviously on the way up.
The excellent trams and metro station are a 10 minute walk away. My wife has some difficulty walking and so we were reliant on transport.
On New Year's Eve we decided to use the hotel recommended car service to and from our venue for the night, as we felt this would be a more reliable option than taxis.
We were let down by the driver who was meant to pick us up after midnight and were left stranded, searching for a taxi in the early hours, eventually managing to find one at some cost.
The hotel were mortified by our experience. Though recommended by them, the car service is an independant company. We used the car on several other occasions to and fron the station with no problem at all.
After this experince, the hotel were most helpful and generous, and nothing was too much trouble for them. We returned for 1 night on our way back and were upgraded to a larger suite.
So, overall, the hotel was very good, and the staff in particular deserve praise. They responded well to a difficult situation.
I would probably choose a hotel nearer the centre in the future if you have any mobility problem.

Hotel General is super. Close to attractions...we walked everywhere. The staff at the hotel is the best we have every encountered. Great bar and restaurant. We really enjoyed the "cellar bar". Super breakfast.

We stayed there from 31/12/2013 to 2/1/2014.

The room was better than in the photos. I was very satisfied with it.

All the people working there where very helpful, polite and professional.

Everything was very clean. And mean clean.

We later returned to this hotel, at a different room for another 2 days. Again, we where 100% percent satisfied.

The location was fine for me. Not in the historic centre where there are always lots of people but only 20 minutes walking time from it.

I will visit this hotel again if I ever go back to Prague.

Stayed at the Hotel General a couple of days based on Tripadvisor recommendations and haven’t been disappointed. I’ve used quotation marks for “New Town” to point out the hotel ‘s proximity to several New Town landmarks, although strictly speaking it’s located in the Smichov neighbourhood on the other side of the Vltava river.
The 5-star hotel is close to the “Andel” subway station and public transportation hub (B Line). To reach the New and Old Town you don’t have to take the metro though – Charles Bridge can be reached after a 25-30 min walk, while to get to the Old Town it’s best to cross the Palackeho or Jiraskuv bridge into the New Town and continue walking on the riverside along some remarkable landmarks like the the Dancing House and the National Theatre (Narodni Divadlo) .
The Dancing House (aka “Ginger & Fred”), just a 10-minute walk from the hotel, was co-designed by the famous American architect Frank Gehry, best known for his masterpieces of deconstructivist style in Bilbao (The Guggenheim Museum), Los Angeles (The Walt Disney Concert Hall) or Chicago (The Millennium Park). There are several restaurants and bars in the hotel’s area.

Reception staff were courteous and helpful. The rooms bear the names of famous generals, each having their general’s painted portrait on the wall, a feature which will certainly appeal to modern history buffs. I booked a single room, which was on the smaller side, but this did not bother me as I spent most of my time exploring the city. It was however well appointed, featuring a large desk with a flat-screen TV, coffee and tea facilities and a comfortable bed. It was very quiet, as the window overlooked an inner courtyard. The spacious bathroom had a rain and a power shower plus a range of beautiful toiletries. My only niggle was that the hotel’s sauna needed advance booking at quite a hefty price, billed per hour.

The buffet breakfast served at the elegant Viva Victoria restaurant on the top floor was excellent. I would like to commend its waitstaff , especially two Arab gentlemen -I’m sorry I don’t remember their names- for their attentive, friendly service and impeccable manners.

Overall a very pleasant stay, and the great service more than made up for the small single room.

I took my boyfriend to Prague for his Christmas/Birthday present and really wanted our hotel to be something special. I chose the Hotel General based purely upon Tripadvisor reviews as it sounded lovely and having returned yesterday can say we have never stayed somewhere more luxurious, charming and thoughtful.

We arrived by the hotel taxi which made the beginning of our break easy as the driver collected us from the airport. Although we arrived quite late there was a doorman waiting for us who promptly took our suitcases in and led us to reception. Martin at reception very kindly welcomed us to their hotel and offered our complimentary drinks to be taken to our room as we were keen to get showered and go exploring. We immediately felt welcomed and settled and were taken away by the beauty of the place. Our room was a deluxe double with a lovely huge bed and a bathroom with a bath/shower. We were surprised to find 2 bottled waters either side of the bed with a note wishing us pleasant dreams. There was also a note on our table telling us what the weather would be like the next day so we could plan it better. We thought these were lovely gestures, and although this is a 5* hotel we did not expect this kind of thoughtful treatment.

We only ate in the restaurant for breakfast but it was absolutely delicious. The omelette we chose was made to order and the buffet was delightful, the waiters was conscious about when items were running low and constantly filled the fruit salad to keep it fresh. We were offered all various hot drinks and were re-filled when empty. A television showed a video abut the different sights and things to see in Prague which helped us greatly as when walking around the city we could identify buildings we otherwise wouldn't perhaps have taken a great deal of notice in.

The city itself is beautiful. We have travelled around various European cities but found Prague to be particularly stunning. The grandeur and culture of the place was overwhelming and we settled in straight away. The people were lovely and we were greatly surprised by the gorgeous weather! Sunshine everyday meant we sat outside most bars and restaurants and we felt we saw the Charles Bridge and the Castle in their full beauty. We found the hotel to be about a 20 minute walk to the centre if walking quickly but we didn't use any public transport as we thought the walking was lovely. Crossing all the bridges and marvelling at the architecture was really quite something.

Overall the trip really made the start to our year amazing and we have the Hotel General to thank greatly for this. They made us feel so welcomed to their city and every member of staff we met couldn't have gone out of their way more to help us. Anyone who is having trouble picking somewhere to stay should look no further than this hotel, I highly recommend it!

Although in a rather quiet area, the hotel is a real haven of peace and class. WE stayed there 4 nights for the new year and we had a great experience at the hotel. Super service, nice rooms, very clean and the hotel location is quite central. It might not be down in the middle of the old town however it is a walking distance and this has allowed us to discover more of Prague. Breakfast and service in the restaurant are also 5 stars.
Overall the hotel is a classy rather understated. we stayed in the General De-Gaulle suite and the room size was perfect.
I highly recommend the hotel because it allows an authentic Prague experience as it is located in a residential area and yet very close to shopping, restaurants and public transportation.
