“One of our best Prague experiences”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

Thank you TripAdvisor for helping us find this place. We are a family of two adults and two kids, and the room at the Aparthotel City 5 suited us quite nicely. But, the room was just the beginning, by far the best part of the stay was the help we got from Kristina (part owner?). She kept the reception open late the night we arrived (we had a late flight into town) and welcomed us with beer, pastries for the kids, and an amazingly enthusiastic and detailed overview of her city and what to do for our next few days. Her recommendations were spot on, and her extra help in arranging events personally was really appreciated. I can't express strongly enough in words how wonderful a lady she is and how great our stay was because of it. Plus, location of the property is very convenient to tram and metro lines. All in all I'd tell anyone I know to stay here.

This is a wonderful place to stay but what makes it 5 star is Kristina - who runs it. She is a ball of energy, helpfulness and enthusiasm. She is mother hen to everyone staying there. She is just lovely. She arranged a taxi to meet us at the airport. As soon as we arrived she sat us down with coffee and cakes. Our apartment was huge, light, clean and very comfortable. Everything worked. Everything we could possibly need was there. The bed was big and mega comfortable. There was also a sofa bed in the sitting room supplied with linen in case it was needed.
There was good free internet and a telly.
There was a microwave, a kettle, a two ring hob and a fridge. There was no toaster.
Kristina has a small area on the ground floor which is a breakfast room plus all day cafe. For a small price she produces breakfast of most of the standard things, fresh rolls and cakes, cereals, fruit, yogurt, cheese, meat. Also she will make you toasties - toasted ham and cheese. To drink - juice, coffee, tea, hot chocolate.
We really fell in love with Czech bread - rye and caraway.
Next door to the apartment is an good inexpensive place for a meal. It is called 'The Thirsty Deer'. Upstairs is a noisy smoky pub. Go downstairs and it is smoke free and peaceful. Czech people eat their main meal at lunch and have a simple evening meal of bread and meats. Perhaps this is why we found that lunch was better than supper at The Thirsty Deer.
The Aparthotel is not in the very centre of Prague. The area where it is is OK. The street was an old brewery with houses from about 1900. It is an area where normal Czech people actually live. It is not seedy. There are lots of ordinary shops and eating places . It is not like the centre - full of tourist stuff and tourists. As you come out the hotel - if you go right - the river is at the end of the street. If you turn left and left again, within a few minutes walk is Andell. Here you can pop on a Number 12 tram which takes you within about 5 minutes to the very centre. Kristina can sell you tram tickets but they are also easy to get from yellow machines at some tram stops. The instructions are in English. Also at Andell is a huge Shopping Mall with a big Tesco.

The best thing about our stay is Kristina. She went out of her way to be sure that we were well-informed about Prague and taken care of. Our laundry was washed and folded when we returned after a day of touring. She was wonderful. We walked everywhere, and it was a bit far from the city center, but it was a lovely walk along the river. If you took the metro, it would be perfect.

Aparthotel City 5 gets a high five!… : in depth review and tips below:

Aparthotel City 5, Vltavska 11/667 | Praha 5 - Smíchov, Prague 15000 , Czech Republic (Praha 5)

I visited this apartment hotel for two nights while interrailing in September 2013.

Our original package (was for a double room and bathroom apartment). No Tourist tax exists in Prague at this moment in time of writing.

We arrived at Prague at Praha Hlavni Nadrazi mail rail station. You can either catch a tram/bus from the main rail station to the hotel (not sure what tram/bus number) or catch the train from Praha Hlavni Nadrazi to Praha Smichov and then it is practically a 15 minute straight walk to the Aparthotel (this train journey is free for interrailers). You can also catch a tram from Smichov to the hotel as well.

Another option also is that Kristina (owner of Aparthotel City 5) can send transport to the train station (14 Euros per car per journey at the time of writing) to pick you up. Kristina may offer journeys to and from airports as well...

Pre-communication before arrival was good. Kristina sent an email confirming your stay; bed arrnagements; whether you need to picked up etc.

We arrived at the Aparthotel just before midday and was greeted by Kristina, who is very lively, cheerful and happy. You cannot miss the hotel entrance, as its front face is painted dark pink! You have to ring the bell for entering first time around.

Kristina provided tips, guides and a free map (so don't buy one) of the area. We were also greeted with complimentary drinks (we had teas) which was nice and refreshing after a train journey and eventually showed to our rooms after 45 minutes. There is a breakfast bar downstairs which costs 4 euros per person for a selection of foods.. but we cannot comment on this as we never had it during our stay. There is also a free computer with internet access to use downstairs if required. Free wifi exists throughout the hotel with good connectivity.

There was a lift available. The lift also had a mobile phone with Kristina's contact details for emergencies for any after hour problems.

There is a shopping mall complex 3-5 minutes walk away from the hotel with normal day-to-day shops for clothes etc with nearby restaurants (such as TGI Friday's; KFC etc). The shopping mall here is not extortionate in this area as it for locals and there is a Tesco Supermarket if you wanted to buy food, drink, clothes etc.

There is also a really decent, fairly priced restaurant next door: 'Thirsty Deer' (Check out other reviews) which we were recommended from Kristina. There are not many restaurants that are good value within the centre of Prague's old town and tourist areas. Using the bathrooms (particularly in most places) results in a paying a fee.. so make sure you have coins)...

Kristina also sells public transport tickets for use within a certain timeframe (e.g. 90 mins; 24 hrs etc). We only used the 90 mins tickets once to get up the funicular to check out the Petřín Tower (Eiffel Tower knock-off). Besides that, it will take you approximately 30-40 mins to walk to the old town of Prague - which is nice during a clear day/night and 30-40 mins walk to the area around Prague Castle from the hotel (for 25 year olds anyway). Trams and buses are available, which Kristina will provide advice on in catching them to the typical tourist attractions.

The studio apartment was clean, tidy and spacious. We were in Room 41-D which was on floor 4.
We had a view overlooking a road and other buildings. The studio flat had a secure safe, area to hang clothes, TV, table, 2 chairs, kettle, cups, towels, a kitchen top, fridge, pots and pans, electric hob, cutlery, complimentary teas, some seasoning, microwave. I wasn't too sure if had complimentary toiletries, but we had our own stuff and there is a Tesco supermarket nearby...

The shower is modern and good. The bathroom was clean. Kristina also provides each room with a folder on tips and info about Prague which was useful. The bed was very comfortable and we had a good sleep. The whole apartment was clean.

You are given a key to the room, a key to the front door, and a key to dispose of any rubbish in your room. Your apartment is not serviced during your stay (unless you request it I think... just query this with Kristina). We were not there for too long and didn't require fresh towels daily etc...

You can pay for your stay at the hotel with card or cash (Euros or Local currency accepted). It cost us 65 Euros per night as per website.

The price for this hotel is fairly reasonable (similar to price to a Premier Inn in the UK - cost us £55 ish per night at the time. Definitely value for money for the quality, space and comfort of a room in Prague - and the service, tips and advice from Kristina was remarkable.

The location of the hotel was not in a tourist area - which is good and nice to get away from sometimes... there are local restaurants and people within the same area and it's only a 5 minute walk to the shops, local restaurants and supermarket and 30-40 mins walk to the main tourist attractions of the old town or Castle. There are good transport links from the hotel to these places if you don't want to walk.

On our last day, Kristina allowed us to store our luggage securely at her hotel and provided us the front door key and storeroom cupboard which was kind. Not only that, but she assisted in printing out our flight e-tickets for us as well - even though it was just past her office hours. The service here is remarkable and considerate to guests.

Overall, the staff were fantastic in their service, guidance, advice and tips. The room was very comfortable and the location was not too arduous at all - it was within reasonable travelling distance from everywhere else - either by walking or public transport. If I had to come back to Prague, I would come definitely back to this apartment for sure…

This fine lady should be Mayor. She sat us down and after we told her of our plans, she mapped out our days and gave better suggestions. She stands out as the shining light of hospitality. We had a lovely room in the back upper floor. Very clean. Our laundry was done in 1 day. Her suggestions and map helped us to enjoy the fabulous city of Praha. We saw the last day of the Mucha exhibit per her direction. Excellent!! She even stayed late to make sure we were ok after a local resto couldn't tale CC due to machine issues and I had to run back to get cash. Very special.

Room Tip: Ask Kristina.

Kristina is wonderful. We stayed 4 nights at her place. She cooked fresh breakfast in the morning. She even did our laundry. She provide all the maps, and what to see and how to do it. She even changed our euro at the best rate.

The place is nice. We had a small apt for the first night but then she moved us to a bigger place. The location is bit out side of old town but one can walk easily.

Just one concern. No body is at the counter after 8 P.M.(however, she provided two cell phone if help is needed). We had one person walk behind us and entered the main lobby. You get a key to open the main gate from the street level. Kristina was there and confronted him and get rid of him. That did not go well with us. The street ends with Casino at one end and there is an adult shop at the other end. I am not sure how much one should be concerned but we kept watching behind our shoulder every time we entered the place.

There's not much to add to what has already been said. Kristina will make you feel like a Prague native in no time. Most of what you want to see is within fifteen minutes or less by foot, and the Prague transit system makes everything even more accessible (you can get your 3-day pass at the hotel). The rooms are quite comfortable, and starting your day in the cozy breakfast room (with one of Kristina's excellent lattes) is perfect. If you come home tired at the end of the day, the Thirsty Deer restaurant two doors up is a fine example of a local restaurant (venison stew was really good). Unless your budget is unlimited and you go really high-end, this is the only place you want to stay in Prague.

Room Tip: There's little difference from room to room, but the upper floors have less street noise.
