Our family accompanied my husband on a business trip to Prague last week. After a great deal of searching we found the Appia Residence, we struggle to find accommodation for 2 adults and two teenagers. We were given an upper floor apartment in the hotel with high ceilings, beams and views across to the castle and cathedral rooftops.
Our apartment consisted of a very large double bedroom with easy chairs, table, desk and flat screen tv. Our children shared a comfortable sofa bed in the large living room, this also had easy chairs, tv, dining table, kitchenette with fridge and hob. The marble bathroom was clean and large and the entrance hallway had hanging rails, wardrobe and mirror. Overall, it was spacious, clean and ideal for our family.
As constructive criticism I would say: there is no shower curtain around the bath so you inevitably spray the bathroom floor, we 'carpeted' it with spare/used towels but even so it must cost the hotel a lot in extra laundry. There is no plug close enough to a mirror to use straighteners (a major point if you have a teen daughter), but the hall mirror did lift off the wall, necessity being the mother of invention! The hairdryer provided had a very long lead however. The hotel bar is rarely used so a directory of local places to drink or eat in the evenings would be useful, especially if you arrive late as there is no evening meal/room service. As there are only 3 English stations (news/sport) it would be nice to have a DVD player at least in the main living room. There is free wireless internet.
That said, we would stay there without hesitation again, it may be that other apartments/room in the hotel do have these facilities. Breakfast was plentiful and served in a delightful beamed attic room, the location was ideal, quiet, but only minutes from the castle entrance and only 5 minutes or so down to Charles Bridge.
We enjoyed a meal at Gitanes, which is just down the road from the hotel, Club Arkitekto was even better, it had lots of veggie choices and is in a cellar room which had a cosy and friendly atmosphere. Our favourite restaurant of the trip was a vegetarian one, Lehka Hlava across the river. For those veggies who get tired of having only one option of the menu this place is amazing, the food was excellent, plentiful and very good value. We ate in the 'starry night' room, the ceiling is painted dark blue and scattered with tiny lights. The meat-eaters enjoyed it too, so much so that we went there twice in 4 days! Visit the cafe in the Municipal House, just to look at the opulent chandeliers, efficient waiters and to people watch while sipping the best mulled wine this trip! The cinema just across from Municipal House in the shopping centre had English films so Johnny Depp kept the teenagers entertained for a few hours!
My husband usually stays in the typical business hotels, but this provided a much more comfortable stay if you don't need fancy restaurants or a pool/spa, it would make an excellent 'home from home' if you were there for a longer period. Overall a wonderful trip to an atmospheric and interesting city.
