“Wonderful stay at Iron Gate”

Iron Gate Hotel & Suites

Our family had a wonderful 3 night stay in Prague at the Iron Gate Hotel. The location is excellent, almost in the Old Square (down a small lane) a short walk to Charles Bridge- just close to everything yet so very quiet. Our apartment had 2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms and 3 toilets. The bedroom on the second floor had a spa bath which was wonderful especially after walking the wonderful cobblestone roads of Old Prague. The apartment was very large, with a small kitchen (just enough for what we wanted), dining table with chairs, lounge chairs and lounges in the family area. The beds were most comfortable and the chocolates left on the pillow (by the cleaning staff) were a lovely surprise.
Our room was wonderful with old beams coming through the floor, and painted frescos on other beams..it was just so much fun and set us up to have a family holiday in Prague to remember.
The breakfast was served at the restaurant (The Bognor) and was the most amazing array of food- we booked the Cultural package which included being picked up at the Airport (and also return trip to airport) in a Mercedes Car, the apartment, the breakfasts, The Prague Card (with transport tickets also) and a three course meal at a restaurant nearby. All of this was excellent and exceeded our expectations. I would not hesitate to recommend the Iron Gate for so many reasons: location, interior design, staff, food at the Bognor [both breakfast and other meals (and sweets treats) ]and the excellent Cultural Package designed by this hotel.
A plus for the emailers- the hotel provides a room with a free internet computer for use by hotel patrons.

“Heaven on the perfect block...”

Iron Gate Hotel & Suites

Prague was the last stop on our (hubby and me) 18-day trip, the majority spent traveling around Croatia. All thoughout our travels, people urged us to tack an extra day on to Prague as we would want more time there than just an overnight. I am sorry we didn't have an extra week! We LOVED The Iron Gate so very much and found it difficult to leave our extraordinary room (206). It was grand and palatial with frescoed ceiling, and the best of our entire trip. I generally get nervous when hotels are known for having lots of "character" but in this case, it was true in the best sense of the word. The staff was lovely and accomodating and as late sleepers, we were glad that breakfast (included in our rate) was served til 11. Housekeeping was omnipresent if one needed anything. I am not a fan of the generally hard Euro beds so we requested extra down comforters to put over mattress. We were happy to do it ourselves but instead, 2 housekeepers were sent to re-do the bed for us. The free internet in the very nice and private lounge was also much appreciated after being nickel and dimed at Villa Argentina in Dubrovnik. No detail went unnoticed--the Etro bath products, the huge free bottle of Evian left for us on the dining table in our room every day. I can't say enough about this glorious and perfect hotel and I am a tough critic. I would take Iron Gate over the bland and predictable Four Seasons any day.

We spent 3 nights in this lovely hotel. The location was perfect. Extremely central but just off the busy main pedestrian areas. We had a Royal Suite and everything in the room was perfect and better than anticipated. Room, jacuzzi bathroom, sitting room/kitchen was huge!

Staff were very friendly and helpful - can't fault at all.

The only small negative I'll note: when staying in the room on the ground floor courtyard (suite 100), there are trolleys (laundry perhaps?) that run through the courtyard at around 6am for a minute or two. Not really a sounds one wants to wake up to at 6am. But apart from that, no other noise from the courtyard - despite that being the breakfast area as well.

Also: no curtains to darken the room. The windows were heavily glazed so no one could see in - but it only had a fine net type "curtain" that offered nothing in terms of reducing the light from the central courtyard.

The central courtyard lights also automatically came on every time someone walked across or entered. This might be slightly annoying to some that are sensitive to light - especially when there are no curtains!

Breakfast was excluded from our rate, but it's worth having breakfast at the hotel (which is lovely), as the street cafe's do not offer a "standard" English breakfast.

Great restaurant (not connected to hotel) just opposite main entrance - booking needed in advance.

I will recommend this hotel without a doubt - a real treat !

“Lovely hotel, perfect location, but watch the power!”

A beautiful, charming hotel in a perfect location: turn left from the front door, go through a covered arcade, and you're standing in front of the Astronomical Clock on the old town square. But because it's tucked away on a side street, the hotel is wonderfully quiet, away from the tourist bustle. It has the personal feel of a small hotel, although I think there must have been quite a few rooms.

The hotel is in a renovated historic building and has a large courtyard with a bar/restaurant (which we didn't use). I paid a little extra for what I think they called a "royal" room and was rewarded with colorfully painted ceiling beams and a generously sized room with a separate sitting area that had a large sofa and table, looking out over the courtyard. The furnishings were a little haphazard--my wife thought they looked a bit tacky but I thought they were cute.

I loved the bathroom, which was large and had a big soaking tub--great for relaxing in the bath. The shower is a hand-held nozzle and yes, you will get the floor a little wet if you take a shower; but we stayed in four different (very nice) hotels here and in Germany during our trip and this was true in nearly every one. European beds are also just a bit harder.

I didn't detect any internet access in the rooms, but the hotel has a guest lounge (very nice, by the way) that has a PC with free internet.

The entire staff was gracious and friendly during our stay, and responded quickly to all of our requests; they speak excellent English. A staff member brought us free glasses of sparkling wine as we were settling in.

There were two quirks that prevent me from giving this hotel a top rating. The power went out in our room several times, but would come back on when we got up to investigate. As far as I can tell, there seem to be motion sensors in the room that detect whether a guest is there or not and then turn off the power (to conserve energy, I guess) if no one is there. I thought this was crazy until we checked into our next two hotels (luxury properties in Dresden and Berlin) and found the same thing, only in these cases you had to insert your key card into a slot just inside the door to turn the power on. This would have been a minor inconvenience if on several occasions the power hadn't refused to come back on; my guess is that the electrical system just couldn't handle the constant on/off and breaker switches kept flipping. When this happened the staff did rush around trying to fix the problem and eventually did, but it was an annoyance.

The other thing was that there was quite a bit of noise in our room, not from the street, but from the restaurant, which was right outside our door. The bar played fairly loud music over speakers all day long. To be fair, they did not do this before 10 a.m. or after 10 p.m., but if you are a late sleeper or early-to-bed type you might ask for a room further away from the restaurant.

“4 Star rather than 5”

Iron Gate Hotel & Suites

This is really a four star hotel rather than a five star. The room we had was at the top of the hotel and although it was quite nice you had to negotiate quite a few stairs to get to it. Once inside it was quite dark and the shower was a bit awkward to stand under due to the beams running across the bathroom.

The hotel didnt supply an iron and ironing board which was a bit of a drawback for us however overall the hotel was very nice and in an excellent location (very near Charles Bridge and on top of the old town square) so I would definitely recommend it providing the price is reasonable.
