“would recommend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2008

we stayed at the San Marco for our Xmas 2007.
We would HIGHLY recommend.

There was 3 of us and we had a very large room with 2 queen size beds (2 of us were a couple). We had a large modern bathroom and we were very surprised at how cheap the place was for what we recieved.

I was originally worried because of some of the dodgy reviews but we were deffinitely happy with it although one of the girls at reception was really rude.

Not a bad breakfast .

Deffinitely value for money.

Excellent hotel, good location only 5 mins walk from Wencelas Square but plenty of bars around the hotel anyway. Found the Staff very friendly & helpful, clean & pleasant room. No hassle booking in or out. Good value for money.

Definitely NOT a three-star. We weren't expecting much, but what we found was quite dismal. The sheets had holes in them. We were allotted two small, thin quilts (enough to cover one person each) for a double bed. The beds had springs that you could feel every time you turned over. Our room had, strangely, a tiny adjacent room with two twin-sized beds crammed into it...it might have been meant for those traveling with children, but I think a child might have even felt claustrophobic in it.

The one saving grace was that the bathroom was very elegant--too bad the rest of the hotel was not (the stairway railing was about to fall off...my boyfriend might have taken a nasty fall down the steps if he hadn't felt it give way right as he leaned onto it to look down). There was no bathtub, only a shower. After spending the entire day walking around the city, a nice soak in the tub would've been preferable.

Breakfast was plentiful, but not very appetizing. Cold cuts with cheese and bread. Coffee was quite bland.

The hotel is located on a dimly lit street (though it was a major road), with virtually no signs marking it. We didn't see the place until we were right at the front door--the only place where the small-print name is visible from the street.

Overall, a two-star hotel at best. We got a very good deal on the room through expedia, but given the vast quantity of hotels we walked by during our two-day stay there, there are likely many others that are better and similarly affordable.

San Marco is a nice little hotel which serviced all our needs & more!
Very close to all the main sights such as Wenceslas Square & Charles Bridge. San Marco is budget focussed, but staff are friendly & helpful.

We were 5 people who booked one 2-bedroom, and one 3-bedroom. When we arrived we were told that we would get an "appartment" with two bedrooms and one bathroom. So we had to be 5 people sharing one bathroom. When everybody showers in the morning it took some time to get ready... I had to live in the same place as my boyfriends parents, and that would be ok, if we had been able to close the door between the rooms, but the door to our (my boyfriend and my) room was broken, so it was half open all the time. Not exactly a romantic holiday...
The rooms were ok cleaned, but behind the chair and under the bed etc it was wery dusty. The towels were changed every day, but the bed wasn't changed during the entire stay (3 nights).
The breakfast was ok, but the waterboiler wasn't clean, and the jelly stood out on the table during the whole day. Not wery nice....
The staff was not rude or anything, but they weren't wery nice either....
I would not travel back to this hotel... It was wery dissapointing

The hotel is located in a mainly residential area, about 400m up the road from the main square in the new town (Wenceslas Square - this is where all the 'whole city' tour groups leave from). We found the location ideal, due to its proximity to Wenceslas Square and because it was only about 100m from the nearest metro station. From the hotel its about a 10 minute walk to attractions like the astronomical clock, and about 15 minutes from Charles Bridge (the bridge that links the old town to the new town). There are a few good restaurants nearby, but you have to look for them. However, the hotel is within walking distance of the Vinohrady area, which is full of excellent restaurants (a tip is not to be put off by the way the outside of pubs and restaurants look in Prague as looks can be decieving - always go in and have a look). The hotel itself is very basic, but is clean and relatively well maintained, although we did have to ask for our towels to be changed each day. The staff are excellent! They all speak english proficiently and have superb local knowledge. We stayed here as three lads on a weekend away, but this hotel is equally suitable for travellers looking for a base to explore the city from. The breakfast was basic (cereal, cold meats, fresh fruit, bread, fresh orange etc) but enjoyable and the eating area was kept very clean. There is free internet access also which made planning days out and communicating with home very easy. Overall, I'd reccommend this hotel to anyone visiting the city, with the main benefits being the location and the helpful staff. If you're looking for a basic clean hotel its ideal, if your used to the finer things in life your better off looking for a four star hotel in Prague.

  • Liked — The extremely helpful staff.
  • Disliked — Having to request that the bathroom be serviced each day.
