“A Golden Hotel in the Golden City”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

I had a wonderful 9-night stay at the Golden Wheel. The location was excellent for sightseeing on foot, it was close to all the sights and to public transportation. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was comparatively large. The hotel itself is in a historic building and has character and ambiance. Restaurants and cafes for every budget and taste are within a few minutes walk. You are located in the diplomatic area of the city and just a few blocks from the castle. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Generally a quiet area, but get a room off the street if any noise disturbs you.

For what you pay you get really spacious, comfortable, attractive surroundings. Staff are very pleasant and most helpful. A lovely little cafe off the main foyer provides a decent continental breakfast and snack meals all day until early evening. There is no restaurant but then there are many places to eat all on the same street. In fact we ate dinner in a different restaurant each night, all within a minute's walking distance of the hotel, and all meals were very good indeed. Rooms are all spotlessly clean. The bathrooms are large and very well equipped. There's the usual well stocked mini bar, fridge, and kettle for a range of teas, coffee, and hot drink sachets. Extra little touches include the fresh rose and complimentary chocolate on each bed every day, and the daily info sheet at breakfast with weather details for the day, tourist suggestions, and not-to-be-missed events. The decor is very attractive. A lot of warm wood, chrome and stainless steel glass elevators, a beautiful view from a panoramic upper balcony and some lovely bits of art dotted around (sculpture in stone and bronze and a fair few paintings in various local styles). There's free Internet access in every room if you've your laptop or iPad with you. Or there's a small reading room with a net access PC, a couple of comfy armchairs and a bookcase for you to leave what you've finished reading or perhaps pick up what someone else has left.

Hotel located half way between river and castle. Ideal location, preferable to centre hotel which can be quite noisy and very crowded.

Stayed there with another couple for 4 nights and thought the location was excellent. If you do not like walking up and down hills then I would suggest you stay in town and get a taxi or tour bus to transport you from place to place. There is so much to see wherever you go, just turn a corner and you'll encounter beautiful buildings, statues etc.

The room at The Golden Wheel was excellent. Very roomy with a mini bar, kettle (only tea was free of charge). Decent size wardrobe and safe. The bathroom was beautiful, my only complaint being the height of the bath. Stepping in and out was very difficult and I slipped many times. I do not recommend the bath/shower to older or less abled people. Unless they have other types of baths/showers I think it would be better to stay somewhere else. There was no anti-slip mat and nothing to hold on to while getting in and out, very dangerous.

Bed was excellent. Slept even better in Prague than I do at home but that may be due to all that exercise. We were left a chocolate and a rose on our bed each evening, nice touch.

Breakfast was simple but adequate. I don't normally have much of a breakfast so a slice of toast and some jam was enough for me. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed.

Staff were excellent and went out of their way to make us feel welcome, dealing with any problems immediately.

There are numerous restaurants and shops in the street and a very small super market just across the street, slightly up the hill. If, like me, you always like to have a bottle of water with you or another type of drink then I suggest you buy it first at the supermarket before starting your day's activities. I bought a bottle of coca cola in there for 24 koruna and the day before I had paid 140 koruna for the same bottle up at the castle.

2 or 3 days is definately too little to discover Prague. 4 days minimum and that's only for the highlights. We stayed on an extra 2 days after our friends had gone and I'm so glad we did. We discovered hidden gardens and beautiful exhibitions. Don't forget to go to a concert in one of the churches. We went to one in St Nicolas church and heard Bach being played on the Organ, fantastic.

I would go back to this hotel and recommend it to others!

Room Tip: Very quiet hotel. Saw 2 rooms, both very different & both lovely.

We stayed in the Golden Wheel for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The hotel is situated on a very nice street with plenty of restaurants and little shops. In addition, you are located a mere 5 minute walk to Prague castle and a viewpoint across the city. In fact, our room (410) had a small terrace facing the castle which was very impressive.

The rooms are clean, well furnished and offer a good, fast wi-fi service (free). The hotel is very nice inside and the staff speak a variety of languages and were always helpful and friendly. Breakfast is a buffet with a good variety of food and drink which was a great way to start the day.

Now to my top tips for Prague.

1. Getting from the airport to the hotel with public transport is EASY and very cheap. It costs about £3 each. Take the 119 bus from outside the terminal (buy tickets in arrivals hall at airport) and get off at Dejvicka. Stay on the same side of the road and walk in the direction of travel approx 100m to a large roundabout. On the right, take tram 20 which takes you to the bottom of Nerudova where the hotel is located.

2. Public transport tickets are based on time and are valid on all forms of transport. You MUST validate the ticket by inserting it into the machines on the bus/tram/metro when you get on.

3. For a great view of the city and reasonably priced food. Book a terrace table on top of Hotel U Prince (directly by the astronomical clock in the centre of town)

Enjoy your stay!
