Owner description: The lookout tower was built for the General Land Centennial Exhibition in 1891 by the initiative of the founders of Czech Tourist Club: Dr. Vilem Kurz and architect Vratislav Pasovsky. Having been inspired by the Paris lookout tower designed by engineer Eiffel, Petrin Hill which is 318 m high was chosen for the structure. The construction began on March 16, 1891, according to the initial design of architect Vratislav Pasovsky further elaborated by engineers Frantisek Prasil and Julius Soucek from Czech and Moravia Machine Works (Ceskomoravska strojirna). The opening ceremony took place on August 20 of the same year. The foundations were laid 11 meters underground to hold the 63.5-metre tall steel construction that weighed 175 tons. An octagonal tube is the core of the structure with the lift surrounded by two spiral staircases with 299 stairs - one for each direction. The entire structure includes bracing elements in the shape of Saint Andrew's crosses. The tower has two lookout landings; the upper one is 55 metres high. The ground floor and basement are situated in a neo-Renaissance building. At the beginning of July 1938, the top of the tower was damaged by fire, probably caused by a short circuit in the lift cage. The observation tower was a TV transmission tower between 1953 and 1992. Today, it is only used as a lookout tower.

“Windy place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2014

The Petrin Tower is a smaller copy of the famous EiffelTower in Paris. you can see the similarity, the designer is the same as I understood. If you want the best view over Prague this is the place to go. Take the stairs then you feel how high you are going because it can be quite windy in the spirel staircase, which by the way is very smart, there is one staircase going up and one different going down, so you do not have to meet any people in the stairs!! When up on top you can feel the tower wobble in the wind, can be a little scary, just go down to a lower flor and it is ok again.

“Great views of Prague”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2014

We think this had better views than the clock tower. It was a nice/quiet place to escape the crowds. There was 299 steps up to the top of the tower but there is also a lift available which costs extra to use.

We used the funicular to get up to the top of the hill, the views from it weren't anything special but it was a quick way of getting up there if you don't fancy walking.

It was a short walk from Petrin hill to the castle.

“Excellent views and worth the way up”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

This is a must do in Prague. You can go up via a funicular (any transport ticket will do) and stop at the 2nd stop. At the 1st stop is a great restaurant - Nebozizek (reviewed it separately). Once up the hill you can visit the observatory (we didn't go there) or simply enjoy the wonderful gardens for a while. You can also see the hunger wall which runs from the bottom of the hill all the way up. Once at the tower you can choose to walk up the 299 steps or take the lift. We opted to go up the stairs to enjoy it longer. Half way up is an open balcony all the way round, from where one can take beautiful panoramic photos of all Prague, especially the castle which is so close from there. Further up is a closed viewpoint, with about 2 open windows from which one can take further photos. You can also buy a combined ticket to include a visit to the mirror maze which is 50 m away. It is then very easy to walk to the castle.

“Great views of the city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

Good spot to get a birds-eye view of the city and take some great pictures

Make sure to get there early (a little before it opens) so you can have some time at the top before it gets too busy and full of tourists
