Owner description: The lookout tower was built for the General Land Centennial Exhibition in 1891 by the initiative of the founders of Czech Tourist Club: Dr. Vilem Kurz and architect Vratislav Pasovsky. Having been inspired by the Paris lookout tower designed by engineer Eiffel, Petrin Hill which is 318 m high was chosen for the structure. The construction began on March 16, 1891, according to the initial design of architect Vratislav Pasovsky further elaborated by engineers Frantisek Prasil and Julius Soucek from Czech and Moravia Machine Works (Ceskomoravska strojirna). The opening ceremony took place on August 20 of the same year. The foundations were laid 11 meters underground to hold the 63.5-metre tall steel construction that weighed 175 tons. An octagonal tube is the core of the structure with the lift surrounded by two spiral staircases with 299 stairs - one for each direction. The entire structure includes bracing elements in the shape of Saint Andrew's crosses. The tower has two lookout landings; the upper one is 55 metres high. The ground floor and basement are situated in a neo-Renaissance building. At the beginning of July 1938, the top of the tower was damaged by fire, probably caused by a short circuit in the lift cage. The observation tower was a TV transmission tower between 1953 and 1992. Today, it is only used as a lookout tower.

“More than just the views: a must visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013 via mobile

The tower is an absolute must visit. My fiance and I walked halfway up the very steep Hill park and took the train the rest of the way. Tickets are very cheap. Discounts are offered for students and disabled people. A very cheap day out for the entire family. Outside the tower, there is a hot dog stands and catering building where bizarrely Coke is the same price as beer. Both are very cheap - about £1.20 which, considering it is at a major tourist attraction is very good. The 299 steps to the top offer excellent exercise, and the victorious climber will overlook the whole of Prague. When she is our spoon strategically along the climb for those who are challenged in the fitness departments, or of senior years to rest. Lastly, get yourself down to the bottom at the end and be sure to try the excellent cakes and coffee in the downstairs cafeteria. Again, the prices really are not bad compared to tourist attractions and the rest of the world. The cakes really are top notch.

“Excellent Views, not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

The tower on top of petrin hill has two viewing platforms, one at 20m high the other, at the top of the tower is 60m high. The view over the top of Prague is amazing and not one to be missed, the 299 stair climb to the top is defianlty worth it.
We did this at the end of our trip to Prague and it was a nice as we could see all the places we had been and visited int he previouse few days.
Price is very reasonable at 105Kc, if you are scared of hights it might not be the best attraction as the stairs are open on the outside of the tower.

“Best view of Prague, worth all 299 steps!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

The price is minimal in regards to the views of Prague it offers. Make sure you bring a student card with you if you want to benefit from the half price ticket.

There are 299 open-air stairs. Not very scary especially if you have done the eiffel tower although it gets cramped at times. I saw there was an elevator but I am assuming that is for people who require it which makes sense.

At the very top you will feel the building sway which adds to the experience. It also has some windows open so that you can get a better picture without the glare of the glass.

There is also a postcard machine where you can take a picture, add a message and attach it onto a premade postcard with photos of various sights in the city. Not very expensive but I would definitely recommend as a personalized souvenir!

The service though was appalling. As most tourists around me, I was only able to speak English and some words in Czech... When buying the tickets I said 2 adults and 1 student. He took my card to verify student identity and after giving it back to me charged me for 3 adults and 1 student. When correcting him he got angry, talked under his breath, told him he only did what I told him but apparently even understanding my English and hand symbols to represent 2 adults and 1 student wasn't enough. Easy mistake I understand but the fuss and attitude he gave was ridiculous.

“Nice view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

To come to the tower I would recomend to walk up the hill. Take good time it is nice walk and 300m up. From the tower you have a good view. You can take stairs or elevator to the top of the tower.

“Mini Eiffel Tower”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Not much to this. You can climb a few stories up into the metal structure. It is very visible from all over so I'm assuming the view would be good also. Did not take the time to make the climb...
