“Standards have slipped - certainly not a 4 star hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

I have stayed in this hotel on two previous occassions and was very happy with the quality and service on those visits. I was looking forward to going back to share the experience with my partner. However, we were disappointed from our arrival onwards. Although we were told that room service was usually until midnight, when we checked in and were let into our room, we found no information about anything, let alone room service. On visiting Reception we were told that the kitchen was closed due to technical difficulties. Fancying a coffee after our journey, we hunted round for tea and making facilities, as promised on the website and also confimred in an email to me. The only thing we found was a Nescafe capsule coffee machine, for which we were charged the equivalent of £1.50 for a cup of lukewarm coffee. On complaining to Reception, there was no budging - you either paid £1.50 per capsule, or you didn't have it! Not the experience I would have expected from a 4 star hotel. If I had been told that we had to pay for this, I would have brought my travel kettle along.
The main problem with our room was permanent smell of cigarette smoke in the small toilet. When we complained to Reception (twice) we were warned that the hotel was non smoking and we shouldn't be smoking in our toilet!! After explaining that neither of us smoke, the receptionist told us she would speak to house keeping. On returning from our day out and finding the smell still there, we complained again and aksed for an air freshener for the toilet. On our 2nd day, the smell was still there and we bought our own air freshener. Small details, I know, but they soon mount up when you have paid for a suite!
Breakfast was okay, a good selection of bread and it was quite nice to get a coffee without having to pay for it. But you do need to get in there early, or very late to get a table.
All in all, although the location of the Casa Marcello is excellent, we will not be going back there and I wouldn't recommend any of my friends to stay there. If it continues to class itself as a 4 star hotel without any improvement to the room quality, attitude of the reception staff or general housekeeping, I'm not sure how long it will continue to attract the good reviews on Trip Advisor.
Comments about the beds and duvets were spot on. Yes, the mattress is comfortable, but the bath sheet sized duvets are laughable on a double bed for two adults.
It's a shame, this hotel was once so much better and I hope it could be again.
One good thing - the older lady serving at breakfast was very cheerful and always made us smile.

Room Tip: If you can get a free upgrade to a suite, then go for it. Certainly not worth paying for!

We chose this hotel because it looked different and were not disappointed. Our room was spacious, clean and the beds comfortable. Towels were replaced every day. Breakfast was plentiful, fresh and varied and served until 10.30, later at the weekend. The morning we did not have breakfast until 10, there was no bacon left, but although it was not replenished automatically, we could have had it on request. There could be some issues regarding mobility. There are no ground floor rooms and no lift. The higgledy-piggledy layout and winding staircases are attractive and character-ful (is there such a word?), but might pose problems for some guests. We arrived at 9pm and there was no porter to help with our luggage and the receptionist was unable to leave the desk to take us to out room, which took a bit of finding! During the main season there is a porter, and help can be arranged even in low season by prior request, so it is well worth warning them in advance if you will need help.
The hotel is brilliantly positioned. The immediate area surrounding the hotel is quiet, but there are excellent restaurants within three or four minutes' walk and it is only a 7 minute walk, at the most, to the old town square. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay at this hotel again.

We chose this hotel based upon reviews from this website, and reference to their own website, but whilst being a small individual and character hotel there was plenty of room for improvement.
Our first room was dark and without a bath, something that was noted in a request, so we were transferred to another more pleasant room , possibly a suite ? Note there seem to be building and refurbishment work going on with corridors sealed off, something we were not aware of.
By international standards this was not a four star property, with some poor equipment i.e. air conditioning noisy and leaking , wifi not working away from reception area and a lack of information in rooms about simple things like telephone, television, restaurant details and check out information.
Staff were pleasant and helpful but note the limitations and some hard climbing of steep staircases.

Room Tip: If requiring a bath tub check actual room facilities, also check for room location some being less a...

This was supposed to be a romantic getaway.
It was our 4th time in Prague and we wanted a comfortable stay in a hotel that looked nice and relaxing (our favorite hotel appeared to have closed down so we had to find something else) and Casa Marcello looked like it could be the perfect hotel.
We read a lot of good reviews here on Tripadvisor and thought this would be the place to stay. It was not.

I don't like to complain but this hotel had a lot to complain about.
We stayed a week and they first put us in the smallest most dated room in the entire hotel, since we paid for a whole week we didn't think this was at all fair so we had to go back down to reception to say it wasn't satisfactory.
The man in the reception said there was no other rooms available, we insisted it wasn't good enough and after a while he miraculously managed to find two other rooms where in one of the rooms the mattress were of terrible quality so we changed to the room next door to the one we first got put in, still dated, dingy, drafty and DIRTY but a lot bigger.
It appeared to have a decent double bed with a good firm mattress but we discovered after the fist night that the double bed is two singles put together and slips apart, very annoying.
We had to ask the staff to rectify this and after a lot of effort they managed to find a solution and tied them together.
(The bed still slipped apart slightly but it was better than before.)
The pillows were super soft and there was no support for the neck at all and the duvets were tiny and not very thick.

The room had no curtains so we had to use our scarves!!!
(Romance level, zero.)

The bathroom was a nightmare, the shower screen had a large gap so every time we used it there was a flood all over, we had to put every single towel on the floor so we wouldn't slip.

We spoke to the same guy in the reception a bit later on our first day he said that people are often disappointed of the rooms as they photograph the rooms especially so they look bigger on the websites.
Then he also said that people often get upgraded here to nicer rooms but the hotel was fully booked while we were staying.
We found out that this was a lie since the website said there was rooms available.

We stayed in the top of the hotel and had to go outside to get to our room, since it was raining the stairs were very slippery.

This hotel got some rude breakfast staff, one (nice) guy gave us espresso from the bar and said it was included in the breakfast since the coffee from the coffee machine hardly can pass as coffee, when we asked for it the next morning the lady had a real bad attitude and said we couldn't have it, that we have to drink from the machine or get charged.

The hot breakfast wasn't an option for us since we're Jewish and there was no other option but pig, there was even pork bits in the vegetables!!! The only option for my man was the salmon.
The breakfast staff one day refused to take anymore salmon out for the breakfast buffet, they said they were out, my man went to the men's room and came back a few minutes later to find a full plate of salmon after waiting an hour for a fresh batch.
The last two mornings the breakfast staff was laughing at my man as he put salmon on his plate, they thought he ate too much of it but there was no other option and they didn't even offer to make him something without pork.
I can't see why they behaved this badly, it's a buffet and there's no limit to how much you are allow to eat!

The breakfast area filled up very quickly so we had to get up early to get a seat.
On some occasions we had to take your food into the bar area but it's was just in the next room and it was much nicer to be honest since the fire door at the breakfast area is heavy and slams very loudly.

This hotel needs a good lick of paint and a good clean in most places. How this can be a 4 star hotel is an enigma.

Free WiFi's all good but the internet connection was terrible.

Only 2 English speaking TV channels and they are both news channels, not that you go to beautiful Prague to watch TV but still...

But wait! I got a few positive things to say about this place.

The shower pressure was excellent.

Our bed was nice firm even tho it slipped apart.

There's a mini bar in the room, you can take their bottles out and store your own drinks.

The young handyman at the hotel was kind enough to help us up to the room, we sure needed it since there was 50+ stairs!

The safe was locked with your own credit card, no deposit, no charge.

After all this I would NOT recommend this place to anyone.

We booked this hotel after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor and weren't disappointed. We decided at the last minute to get the hotel to book us a taxi to pick us up from the airport (27 euros) and it was great. Usually we're quite happy to find our own way on public transport but our flight didn't land until 7.00 p.m. and it was dark, we were so glad we had. Driver was waiting for us at arrivals, straight outside to his lovely large modern taxi and straight to the hotel (about half an hour). Think it would have been quite difficult to find it down the little alleyways in the dark.
Now for the hotel, reception very helpful and good English. Our room was through several corridors and upstairs but no great problem and when we got inside (having just booked a 'normal' room) we had a very large bedroom, small sitting room and beautiful bathroom - brilliant! Even a chocolate on the pillow, and amongst the toiletries provided there was a hair scrunchie! Never had that anywhere before.
Breakfast the next morning was fabulous, probably the best breakfast ever! Everything from cheeses, cold meats and smoked salmon, fruit, yoghurts, breads, rolls, hot veg, eggs, bacon, sausages, all sorts of spreads, cereals, all sorts of hot drinks.
Old Town Square was just a 5 minute walk and Charles Bridge just a few more minutes further. We were there for 2 nights and walked everywhere, happy to go back to our hotel not too far from everything.
Have already recommended to another friend who is think of going to Prague and if we make another visit (which we hope to) would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: If you arrive late at night, best to get a taxi though in daylight easy to find your way.

I found this hotel very dissappointing. I had booked it on the internet using tripadisor actually (so i was surprised as i always use TripAdvisor to choose hotels). As my husband needed to work for some hours each day we chose the junior suite which had a separate room where he could work. However it was impossible when we got there. The room was so dimly lit you couldn't see anything. There was a tiny table in the room which wasn't as big as the laptop let alone had space to adequately work. So at that moment we knew we couldn't stay.

The bedroom was ok, clean, but quite cold. The bed was really low and hard too. There wasn't a duvet on it but 2 strips of some kind running across the bed. We took one each in order to try to sleep but these didn't cover us for the night. I woke with the cold a number of times.

The breakfast was nice. Basic but you could be fed for the day on it if you wished and the staff on duty were really helpful and friendly.

I used my TripAdvisor app to find a nearby hotel, which we walked to and booked for the remainder of our trip. Price was comparable, nothing else was. Worlds apart.

Room Tip: Don't waste your money on a junior suite.

I enjoyed my stay here, the hotel was located so close to so many sites and everything was walkable. I'm not sure why it's 4 stars - It was clean, but the rooms were bare and small - I had a Deluxe Double Room. There was barely room for 2 suit cases, the bathroom door didn't open all the way or it would have hit the sink. My first impression was horrible when we had booked a car from the hotel to pick us up at the airport. After waiting for a while, we finally called the hotel and found out the car wasn't coming - they thought our flight got in early and so they decided not to get us. Besides that, we had great service from them. Great breakfast every morning - the other car services we got ended up working out perfectly. The internet is patchy, but will do the trick. And besides the rooms being tiny, the beds were SUPER comfy. We slept really well here!
