We stopped in to the KGB museum on a cloudy afternoon... and it ended up being one of the major highlights of our four-day trip to Prague. I HIGHLY recommend it.
When we first arrived, the owner greeted us warmly and asked what our primary language is. Upon hearing it was English, he said he'd do his best - and his "best" was remarkable. Being given a private, thorough tour by someone so knowledgable who spoke solid English in a thick Russian accent made the experience even more enjoyable. He not only showed us each piece of his amazing collection, but he explained it so well that it made the history of the KGB come alive. Had we just wandered through without him, it would have been interesting, but we would have missed out on the significance of some of the collection.
From artifacts and uniforms, to propaganda video clips and photos, this museum gives an incredible, intimate look into the KGB. The owner's attention to detail creates a story around the pieces that absolutely captivated us. Not only did he show us the pieces and explain them to us - what they were used for, how they were worn, what they meant, who used/received them, etc. - but he actually allowed us to hold some of the guns and weapons, put some of the hats on us and took pictures! Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - when or where will we ever be able to wear an authentic Russian military hat, hold an authentic military gun and have it documented again?
Although the museum was not large, it was so full of interesting pieces that we spent a couple of hours there. The owner was very amenable to us asking questions, taking photos and wandering around and it's easy to see that he's taken a lot of care to make the museum as authentic and well-organized as possible. As we left, he thanked us for coming and when we walked out, we both agreed that the KGB museum was one of the best times we'd had in Prague. It was a truly excellent experience.
