Saw Black Box at Image Theatre - end of August 2012

My opinion - Having been to Prague many many times, this wouldn't be one of the top things to do but if you have a few nights and you like the look of it, it would be worth going once because it's a different experience like no other. Especially if it's a rainy day. I think there are quite a lot of very amatuer locations, if you don't pick carefully it could be really bad. Image theatre is meant to be one of the better ones. Black Box was a series of silly sketches about a burglary in between the crazy psychedelic dancing. Had me laughing helped along by a few beers but the crazy dancing can be slightly disorientating. This wasn't highly sophisticated and polished like something you would find at the opera or national theatre, if you expect that you will be disappointed. But entertaining. The other typical option for Prague is the Marionettes and I think the Black light is way better.

My husbands opinion - I do believe the words "make it stop" were uttered. Should have let him stay in the pub.

So the conclusion is that this is definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea, If you have your doubts, it probably isn't.

“Not worth the time and money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

And definitely don't go if you're jet-lagged. I did that the first night I flew into Prague and that was a mistake. The show is weird and I wouldn't suggest it unless the idea of watching illuminated black light dancers and mimes are your form of entertainment. For me, it was a mild sedative. If you do decide to go, note the time when the doors actually open. I think it was 730PM for an 8PM show. When I got there around 720PM, there are already people waiting in the lobby. There are no assigned seats and the ideal spot is center about 5 rows back to see everything. People that came on time (8PM) had to split parties from what I can tell or try to convince other people to shift their seats around. The mimes did a slight audience participation skit which wasn't too embarrassing for those members of the audience involved (in front or on the aisles).

“Such a waste of time!”

If you only have short time in Prague do not waste it on this show, absolute tourist horror! It is corny, we felt so sorry for the performers.

“Amateurs doing the show”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

Went to see Afrikania on August 16, 2012, very disappointed at their dancing skills. Five dancers, clumsy, unprofessional, one male seemed to have classical ballet training, the rest probably took a couple of years o f modern dance. This show reminded me the nightly shows at Club Med resorts, that's how amateurish it was. The choreography is so predictable and so primitive, I felt offended.
I went because I became intrigued by "original" music, well t was awful. No logic in the show. First they would show anthromorphized lion and a lioness dancing rumba or cha cha cha dance dressed in elegant jaguar print leopards, (
the show s about Africa), next Humans, the aborigines Africans, dressed in feathers and masks dance a " typical" African tribal dance to the drum beat. I don't understand he logic here, animals are shown dancing Latin dances dressed like people and people are dressed like animals..

The pantomime performances that took pace between the dance numbers( which were very, very easy technically) were also lame and annoying. In Africania the "story" s about a "loud" man with a promiscuous wife. The wife made out with the postman ( character) and the audience member..

Overall, I am the most unhappy with the performance level of the dancers. Do they think that tourists come from the backward villages, where no one ever seen a ballet or a modern dance? The show is insulting even to a mildly " cultured" person, you don't have to be a dancer yourself to see poor choreography and lack of any technique. Waste of time and money.

A really enjoyable show. A great way to spend an evening and get to appreciate local art. A wonderful show put together by talented dancers and artists.
