“Tourists not welcome here.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

We got served simply because I'm not unfamiliar with dives and crappy pubs so drunken obnoxious and rude people are nothing new to me and I also think that the barman felt a little sorry for us in the end but I wasn't leaving! We did see at least three other tourist couples hurry out as quickly as they arrived after the drunken beer waiter hurled some abuse or another at them. Certainly don't stand near the bar unless you want a torrent of abuse! Very crowded, very smoky and not friendly in the least unless you are what appeared to be the regulars on the reserved tables. Quite how anyone else was actually getting served I'm not sure! Imagine what it would be like if a fresh off the plane Pakistani immigrant that spoke no English walked into a rough working men’s social club and tried to order a beer... that's what we felt like! The only plus side was the cheap beer... If you're in a group, get there early and preferably speak the lingo then maybe give it a try, otherwise avoid!

“Back to an old haunt”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

I would preface a review of this pub by stating that it is really set up to accommodate their local regular clients who come in daily and who all know each other, and tourists are secondary in the pecking order here, so if the wait staff appear surly or unhelpful it's because there core business is all regulars and more or less you are in the way.

This place hasn't changed at all (which is awesome) since I lived in Prague right after the iron curtain fell. The atmosphere is fabulous, everyone sits on wooden benches and it is smoky.

For service, put a coaster in front of you and they will bring a pint.

The food is great, I had a pork schnitzel that was as delicious as I remember it from 21 years ago. My girlfriend had the gulash and she raved about it.

A very famous writer, Bohumil Hrabal, was a regular here, I remember sitting beside him once decades ago. He has since passed on but his portrait and a bust of his head or now part of the decor.

“Skip U Tygra”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

This place is really famous because one of the best writers of Czech Republic Bohumil Hrabal used to go there pretty often and he wrote about U Tygra in his books. Good beer, but the staff reminds me of the old times. Unfriendly, and they think they are better than everybody else. There is an expression in Czech. PINGL! I went there with group of beer drinkers, I asked for mineral water, you should see the expression on the servers face. Never got it. I am Czech living abroad and I understand why people would like to visit, but there are some other choices as well in the center where you do not get the attitude and it's not so loud. I remember when Clinton and Havel was visiting the pub. Somehow there were friendlier.

“Great atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012 via mobile

So maybe heaps of tourists go there but we sat amongst 30 drunk locals, not a tourist in sight. The beer arrives quickly and regularly. It is tasty and cheap. The food is hardly gourmet but fills you up.

If you are looking for something with an authentic feel, this is the spot. I can't wait to go back.
