As always when going abroad I consulted my guide (a very well known international brand, usually wide spread among backpackers) for a nice restaurant to have dinner with my enchanting wife.
In this guide, this restaurant was mentioned twice: First a recommendation for local Czech cuisine and second a recommendation for romance... doesn't it sound very appealing?
We reserved a table at 7 pm and were looking forward for a nice evening.
Let's start with the good things about the restaurant. First of all, the location is very central, in the heart of the old city, near the city castle. Also, the ambience is actually very nice, if you should consider going there after having read this, be sure to book a table downstairs (its old gothic style basement is truly were romantic).
So much for the good things about the restaurant.
Coming to service, we found it - well at least particular. After having ordered (duck and carp - typical Czech dishes) the waitress commented our choice with the words: "Why not." and went off laughing loud... we didn't think much about it, we thought the she was in a good mood as new year's eve was approaching.
Our aperitifs were two Kir Royal... which both of us did not finish, the sparkling wine was not very good. As a starter we shared fresh goat cheese, which was good, but prepared very elementrily (basically a piece of cheese put on a leaf of salad, nothing you couldn't do in 1 minute at home).
Then we were served the main dishes. Oddly enough - when the waiter came I had to take the plate with my hands and was not served on the table... something I found weird in relation to the status of the restaurant.. however, it fitted well withthe comment of the waitress before.
The dishes were absoutely mediocre, something you would expect to get when dropping in into a tourist trap somewhere, but not when looking for a good restaurant. (and of course not worth the money you will pay for that!).
Then again, the service made another faux pas which backed up my very bad impression of the restaurant. The waitress dropped a knife from a plate... nothing unusual up to this point, but instead of picking it up, the waitress started to kick it over the floor into the kitchen, whereby this action was accompanied by her laughter and the irritated looks of the other guests. When she came back to ask if we wanted dessert, we just asked for the check and left, somehow amused about the restaurant and the funny and weird experiences, but definitely not satisfied.
Summary: The restaurant offers very poor service, something you might expect in a suburb beer pub but not a recommended romantic dinner experience restaurant. Also, the quality of the food is at best mediocre and nothing to dream about. Of course you will be presented a high bill, basically, you pay for the location and the nice ambience in the restaurant, but will be ripped off regarding the food and service. I would never go there again, but somehow the experience was funny and we wanted to share this with you, so that you don't have to go there and pay a lot of money, but instead smile in front of your screens without wasting one penny :-).
