Upon entering La Boca, the atmosphere gives you an impression of a warm, inviting and homely feel. That is, until you have the first interaction with the blank faced staff. When a customer walks into a restaurant, welcome them in and greet with a smile. Very simple tactic which seems to work the world over. This place is definately lacking a front person with charisma. We were shown to a table lodged right up against the bar wall, which would have been fine if the restaurant was full and we had no reservation, but it wasn't and we had booked. We requested a table in the corner which was unprepared, but a little more spacious all the same. Our request was met, but not with any enthusiasm.
The food: We opted for a (safe and simple) fried squid dish to start which was both tender and tasty. Main course was a house special: Steak marinated in Chimichurri spices served with pitta bread and a selection of vegetable tapas. The Chimichurri spices obviously took the night off as there was no apparent flavour to enhance the meat. The vegetable tapas were acceptable, but hardly set the world alight. Wine: Ribera del duero 2010 was palatable and good value at 490kc. With respect to one of the staff, the wine service was attentive without being pushy, however, nobody came to ask if the meal was satistactory and there were no recommendations throughout the whole evening.
Dessert : The menu is limted and quite simply, poor.Tiramisu de la casa was bland and well below average. Marscapone gnocchi with sour cherry sauce scented with Grappa: The Grappa scent (with its unmistakeably unique flavour) failed to make an appearance on the taste buds.
Espresso coffee to finish was flavoursome. A spanish brandy would have been a great accompaniment. Alas, there was none.
I would very much like to return, but only after some serious improvement with the menu and a front of house person who can guide the staff in the right direction when it comes to customer service.
Oh and by the way, plastic flower arrangements belong in cheap chinese buffet restaurants. They do not add any enhancement or viewing pleasure in this otherwise pleasantly decorated establishment..
