“Great for a girls' getaway :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2014

Myself and my friend stayed here for one night on the dinner, bed and breakfast tariff-£125 for the twin room. Our room was very clean and had all we needed.Beds were very comfortable and we were able to control the temperature in the room, so no waking up in the night roasting hot! Can recommend the little spa- we hadn't booked but the lovely manicurist was very accommodating and fitted us straight in.Dinner menu had a good selection of starters, mains and desserts and portion sizes were generous.Breakfast was faultless, cooked breakfast ingredients were delicious and hot.Overall a nice hotel with friendly, helpful staff :)

My wife and I stayed here for one night and we really couldn't fault it. Our room was comfortable and clean and looked out over an area of grass (although some do overlook the car park). Our breakfast was lovely with fresh fruit, a good choice of traditional English (including eggs cooked to order) and nice bread to toast. We also had dinner the night before and the food was top notch! Value for money was exceptional. Service was also good. There is a lovely swimming pool etc in a nearby building and plenty of parking space. The whole hotel is kept up nicely and gives an air of being well looked after. It's location isn't spectacular (set at the end of a short cul-de-sac off a busy through road) but we weren't troubled by any road noise. Once inside, you soon forget the ordinary-ness of the location and appreciate the comfortable interior. We would stay again as a good base for Colchester and its surroundings.

Room Tip: We took our own pillows (but do whenever we stay away) so can't vouch for the comfort of those p...

We stayed here for a night to attend a family party and I thought it was a really nice place. As some have noted it could maybe do with a little updating here and there but overall it has a feeling of past grandeur that I think is quite of it's time (not sure say early 80's?) and still charming. The room was very large and so was the bathroom and both were well appointed and well maintained and certainly clean.

We requested and early check in and that was readily agreed to, reception staff were excellent, very friendly. We had a bar meal (steak and chips and burger and chips) and they were both very good. Tina was working the bar at 5pm when we ate and still and 2am when we were all propping up the bar and she was very friendly and helpful and smiling throughout although she must've been exhausted, thank-you Tina.

The party itself was great, buffet very good, service excellent. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and I would have no hesitation in staying here again. We didn't use the pool or spa but other party goers did and said they were good. We paid £69 for bed and breakfast which I thought was reasonable. Overall a decent choice!

Stayed at this hotel in August 2013. My partner and I were attending a friend's wedding in the area and stayed here for two nights.

The location was ideal, as we hired a car at Stansted airport and were familiar with Colchester town itself.

As for the hotel, I was very disappointed and was relieved to check out.

The overall impression we got was of a hotel in dire need of an upgrade. Very old fashioned and reminded me of something out of the mid 90s.

When we checked in and made our way down to the room, we were shocked to find someone asleep inside 'our' room. Clearly we had been given the wrong room. Not a good start. My partner quickly sorted this out and we were given a different room. It was grubby and the window didn't close properly.

Overall, a very disappointing hotel.

Second time here. With a group. Things off the menu again. Food Was ok but considering it is a best Western not very good. Young lady who served us was lovely but embarrassed about the menu. Will stay here again because I have to, but would not advise.

Dear Amie,
Thank you for your feedback. We are continuing to develop our menus and have a new restaurant a la carte selection as well as daily specials to supplement the brasserie menu. I do hope that on your next visit you will be far more impressed.
Best wishes,
Darren.

having had many meetings held at the marks Tey hotel but never stayed overnight before I was very happy with all the levels of service from the spa room to the swimming pool and the restaurant as the hotel was full because of the Christmas party that was going on , as it was an Oscar night there was red carpet photographers and glamour, we were a party of 16 and the Christmas package food was excellent as there were over 200 guest it was organised extremely well , there was some who were complaining but overall it was organised down to the party hats on the table

the rooms are tad dated but its not a 4 or 5 star hotel its better than a travel in and a premier in, the only snag was the bar it was to small for the amount of guest and as it was Christmas everyone wanted a drink next time at least have a small bar area in the main room

would definatly stay again and will use the spa and swimming pool again

Stayed here for one night just before Christmas to meet with family. Decided on this hotel because it had swimming facilities.
Check in okay but foreign girl had difficulty understanding our accentless English tones.
Lunchtime snack in the bar area very tasty. Booked for dinner in the restaurant fro evening meal. Thought a swim would be nice but - didn't fancy having to leave the confines of the hotel to get to the pool area! Yes - you have to go out as this is no connecting corridor or way into the pool area without having to go outside. In the freezing December weather this was not an attractive option, fully clad or not!
Dinner would have been a total disaster were it not for the wonderful Wendy. Actually the food was very good but the wine list drove her and us to distraction. They didn't have any Prosecco left nor did they have the first or second choice of red wines asked for. The house manager's excuse was they had had a busy week (you do surprise I me in the run up to Christmas - surely not?!?!?) and they only got deliveries on a Wednesday (this was Sunday and considering Christmas day was the next Wednesday and presumably no deliveries that day I guess no-one could have Prosecco for 2 weeks then?)
Anyhow, Wendy was an absolute joy with her fabulous personality and willingness to help in any way - she is totally wasted in that place. We did get a complimentary desert as we were so disappointed but only after suggesting something of that order would have been appreciated!!
Have to say the superior rooms were excellent and general ambience most acceptable. As I say - nearly there!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your review and kind comments regarding Wendy.
I will look into your points regarding the availability of wines as we certainly should not have had any problems with availability. I am sorry that this affected the enjoyment of your stay and will certainly look to make the improvements needed.
Yours sincerely,
Darren.
