This is our first visit to Hartford House... We have been wanting to visit for quite some time now... Ever since the restaurant made it into the Eat Out Top Ten... And so we finally managed to arrange a weekend with family over the easter holidays. We were whisked off to our room on arrival for a very swift check in... We had one of the best ever massages, which is really something to say for a resort which we normally find quite disappointing...the grounds make for incredible running and it is truly something spectacular when the horses in a particular paddock decide to canter alongside you.... The food was just superb... Who knew you could do so many varieties of breakfast.. We loved the dinners. we did find the service a bit labored, although i will caveat that by saying that that may be more of a function of our stress levels than the service itself... But we found the service on our last night... The Saturday absolutely superb...
And then I have to mention the dessert... I will be the first to confess that I am not a food critique...hard to say I am even a foodies, but I will be honest when I say I am totally obsessed with real food made real good... To my mind, there are three dishes that have stood out in my memory for whatever reason ove the course of our last few trips in the quest for good food.the first being the oyster starter at Le Bernadin in New York, the second being the liver fruit starter at Dinner in London and the third being the lavender sherbet, turkish delight, lemon verbena Pana cotta and berry sorbet at Hrtford... The chef and her team played out of their boots. Simply superb! Thank you... All meals were superb but the Turkish delight dessert will remain forever etched in my memory
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Peering through one teakwood door at Hartford House, you face a Colonial world. Opening another, the distant sounds of an ancient people at work lilt across the silent landscape, a country of great space, spectacular mountains and big skies. This place commands a headland between the world of traditional cultures and the splendid style of our settler forebears. It is the resolution of all South African safaris. The journey's exclamation point, a retreat from the hubbub where you make sense of a fast life and its senseless details. This is where we learn to redress ourselves on a first name basis. There are too many luxury hotels in the world offering the same: a chocolate on the pillow, canned romance, and cuisine called "haut" because it's spelled in French. Hartford stands apart for its integrity. Its architecture, views, dining, sounds, smells, its racehorses and its people are all exhilarating surprises, unique to this Zululand, this culture, to Africa. Yes, you come here to be pampered, but at Hartford luxury is the journey, not the destination. The truth is, Hartford just happened. A home, and a grand one at that, which grew into a hotel. A community looks to it as its watering hole, its nexus of entertainment, its fountain of gossip. In so many ways, it's gained and regained inspiration from the cultures it celebrates. It is life's exception, a place at the same time comfortable beyond dreams, yet innocent of pretence. ... more less
