“New Year End 2012”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Herdade de Sobroso is a lovely place with lovely staff(Christina and Pedro).Just back from spending New Years Eve weekend.
Just a few setbacks, first the breakfast is very poor , supermarket sliced ham and cheese and,not a boiled egg in sight!! One toaster for over a dozen people.
The decoration is chaotic and amateurish and obviously been done on a budget of money and taste.
Still, nice area, perhaps new ownership policy, with an eye for customer satisfaction would make a significant difference for the better.

Indulge yourself in this amazing hotel. Wonderful rooms, very clean and relaxing atmosphere. Amazing breakfast and to have lunch or dinner is a must. You have to book in advanced and the food is simply delicious. Ask for their wine, as the hotel is also a winery, it is excellent. We stayed in winter but their fabolous swimming pool invited us to come back in spring or summer. Beautiful surrounding area and very close to the Alqueva dam, which is a must. Very close to Moura, a beatiful city which worth to visit.

First thing one should take into account with Herdade do sobroso is that is is a cottage house and not a hotel or residential. This means that you will not have all the 5* or 4* hotel benefits like typical room service or spa or golf or hairdresser or gym ....
However you will get something that few 5* or 4* hotels give you ... peace and quiet... :)
The 11 rooms are carefully arranged equipped with a nice mini bar and AC, you also have a big common living room with a fire place for the winter and with AC for the sumer.
At request you can also have dinner or lunch (just one dish when we were there... one of the few differences for a hotel) prepared in a traditional and careful way.
The swimming pool is small but with 11 rooms its enough. but again with the view that one has there you really don't care.
The staff is small but suffice to answer all the needs and touristic question you might have.
to rest and relax from the warm days you also have a nice balcony with comfortable chairs and fans.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a place with high quality and good value for your money were you can relax and spend time with a good book and forget about all the rest, this is the place!

PS: if you are looking for lots of things to do and radical activities this might be disappointing.

Located in the Vidigueira municipality, in Alentejo, and only 9 km away from the Alqueva dam, this charming country house is equipped with air-conditioned rooms with cable television. The salt water outdoor swimming pool ending in a waterfall offers a panoramic view of the vineyards and of the Serra do Mendro. With a rustic and yet refined and slightly exotic decoration, the rooms at the Herdade do Sobroso Country House also include mini-bar, a desk and a private bathroom. So that guests can discover the natural beauty of the Alentejo region, the front desk, which is open 24 hours, can organise wine tours, initiations to wine tastings, visitations to our cellar, photographic safaris with the possibility of watching deers, boars, mouflons and several birds, hot air balloon rides, as well as boat rides in the Alqueva dam with the possibility of water skiing. It is also possible to explore the surrounding areas thanks to our bicycle rental service. And there are many other activities available. Guests may join the hunting club to hunt partridges, hares, deers, mouflons and boars in the Herdade do Sobroso’s 1600 hectares of land. The restaurant serves traditional and tasty lunches and dinners. Some of our suggestions are roasted boar with green asparagus “migas” (a bread based traditional dish), Portuguese black pig with clams, wild duck rice in the oven with traditional Portuguese sausages, mouflon stew, dogfish soup with a poached egg or octupus rice with coriander. Don’t forget to taste our orange pie, the “toucinho do céu” (egg yolk and sugar tartlet), the “sericaia” (an egg, sugar and milk dessert) and many other traditional sweets.Guests may buy wines, olive oil, rosemary honey and jams in the Herdade do Sobroso’s cellar.
