“World Class AND Green!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2007

We absolutely love Lapa Rios! The setting is incomparable, the rooms are private and lovely, and the food amazing.

Ok, so getting there was a bit of a challenge, but once there we were greeted immediately with fresh tropical juice, amazing views, and friendly service. The rooms had screened windows, outdoor garden showers, and lovely bathrooms. Imagine our suprise the first morning as we're showering and a coati runs by just outside the window!

The night hike and hike with a local shaman were very memorable as was the incredible massage we got! Best massage I've ever had. We enjoyed a sea kayaking trip where local fishermen pulled their boat up beside us and shared a portion of their day's catch! The 'lapas' (scarlet macaws), howler monkeys, coatis, iguanas, etc. were so close and undisturbed that we went almost unnoticed.

Another thing not to be missed is a visit to the local school. We brought supplies and gifts for them, but they were closed when we were there so we didn't get to visit. Next time!

Truly, it was like being in the Garden of Eden. Amazing people, incredible setting, and great service make this a place we look forward to visiting again. But maybe we'll try their Nicaragua resort first... : )

Our extended family (including 3 children and 2 grandparents) spent Thanksgiving at Lapa Rios. We absolutely loved the resort. It is nestled in the rain forest, and we were able to see many birds and animals right from our bungalow. Because there are only 16 bungalows, the service is very personalized. We took several hikes into the rain forest with the Lapa Rios guides and found them to be most personable and knowledgeable -- especially Nito and Alberto. The one outside tour we did to the animal rehab facility across the gulf was very interesting. The kids loved playing with the monkeys and seeing the other animals up close. We hope to return to Lapa Rios someday!

Lapa Rios is a splurge, but worth every cent. I can't describe the experience any better than the other reviewers, so I'll just add a couple of thoughts. We found that there was more than enough to do on our own without taking the official tours- not meant to disparage the tours at all, just to reassure folks who, like us, aren't "tour people." Also, despite the high price tag, we never once felt overcharged, in large part due to the genuinely all-inclusive meals (I don't think alcohol was included, but that's not an issue for us). In addition to allowing you to eat as much (i.e., as many entrees!) as you'd like, the drinks selection was amazing- fresh fruit blends that were the highlight of the meals and the perfect reward after long hikes. If you're looking at these reviews, you've probably heard all about the place; we found that everything we've heard was true and enjoyed every minute.

Lapa Rios is simply the most beautiful place I have ever been. It was our first stop in our Costa Rican honeymoon, and the best money we've spent.

Lapa Rios is definitely for those who want to be active during their vacation. You can relax by the pool or on your hammock, but there are so many wonderful hikes/tours/places to explore!

The bungalows are large and comfortable, and our bungalow, #16, had amazing views of the beach, the forest, and lots of animals (spider monkeys, macaws, howler monkeys...). The beach is about a 15 minute walk away, and completely worth it. It's a quiet, isolated beach with lots of rocks - we saw many birds there, and some other guests saw large groups of white faced monkeys.

The tours! Take the waterfall hike for sure. The Osa Trail was a long hike into primary forest - it's harder to see forest creatures, but still a beautiful hike - the trees will blow you away. My husband did the Night Walk and loved it (lots of river walking, but saw many frogs!)

The food is incredible, and the service is absolutely amazing. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the Osa Peninsula. A wonderful trip and a beautiful place - you seriously need to go.

We recently stayed at this fabulous hotel and could not have been happier. Everything was beautiful and designed around the idea of being eco friendly. The staff was so friendly and helpful, always trying to find a way to do something better. It rained alot, but it was still beautiful from our fabulous room. This hotel is the model that other hotels should copy in Costa Rica. We stayed in Manuel Antonio at Gaia Hotel and it was the complete opposite.....a modern atrosity ruining a jungle landscape. It was a complete relief to see Lapa Rios and it´s beautiful design. We will be back!

  • Liked — It´s design was perfect for the location and Costa Rica
  • Disliked — Not alot to do when raining

We have heard about Lapa Rios Ecolodge from so many nature-loving folks that we decided to add on as many days as we could afford.
Lapa Rios is fabulous. Its commitment to rainforest conservation and its community is unmatched. Hotels and resorts have minimal commitments to sustainability and there is no goal-inclusion with guests. At Lapa Rios we weren't just guests, but part of family supporting a preservation goal.

We were immersed with the rainforest the entire time, no TV's, no city sounds, no light pollution. Just biodiversity. That was our favorite part of the Lapa Rios experience.
And then there was the regional food, the bungalow, the staff, the service, the beaches, and the tours...all superior. How much fresh grilled fish can you eat? Honestly, waking up to rare Great Curassows preening right outside your bungalow, or seeing flocks of 25+ scarlet macaws coasting over the beach!!...monkeys, orchids, blue-morphos, cotingas, sloths, and dart frogs... It just never got old!
Once you tour the deep trails of the Lapa Rios Primary Rainforest where you are surrounded by towering 500+ year old trees, waterfalls, and incredible creatures it will open your eyes to the importance of conserving such age-old ecosystems.

We can't wait to plant another tree at Lapa Rios.

We stayed here for three days at the beginning of August at the end of a two-week stay in Costa Rica. We were charmed by the people we met everywhere but Lapa Rios was truly exceptional. The staff made every effort to answer any question or find what you needed.

We took several tours and saw amazing wildlife - got pretty wet - but then it is the rainy season. One afternoon we just sat on our deck and waited for the wildlife to come to us. Scarlet macaws, toucans, howler monkeys.

We loved the accommodation. We shared it with a little lizard, obviously there to eat any bugs that dared to come in. There was a spectacular storm one night and it felt like we were in the middle of it with the ocean crashing and thunder on two sides.

Brilliant place. Loved it!
