“unbelievable!”

we stayed here on the recommendation of a good friend, so we knew what to expect, but our friend's description didn't begin to scratch the surface of how great van's place is. while showering (if you're tall enough) you can watch the hummingbirds zipping from flower to flower as you wash your hair, then move down to the deck near van's house and watch who visits the bird feeder. you won't miss any of this awesomeness because the howler monkeys wake you up in time to watch the sun rise over punta banca on the other side of the golfo dulce, prime time for bird watching.
the whole property is spotless and perfectly manicured and your accommodation is equally spotless. if you're the type of traveler that needs a lot of gadgets then you should give south osa a miss as there is no electricity. all the electric at toucan terra is solar and only comes in 12v cigarette lighter style. if you want to see amazing animals from your porch, find your own poison dart frogs while hiking to a beautiful waterfall, surf some awesome waves then toucan terra with van is your best choice. if you need a spa, tv, paved roads and frozen tourist drinks then head to disney world.

Room Tip: be sure to stop in jimenez and stock up on EVERYTHING, especially if you are self catering. i didn...

Great place, great host. Like a high class Robinson Caruso. Sitting in the shade and feeling the breeze, hearing the waves, waking to the monkeys. I thought no ac would make for grumpy bride and sleepless nights, I was wrong! Breeze at night kept us fine. I'd stay again. negs- could use better pillows, and minimal romantic privacy with close & open proximity to unit above

I can say this place stinks so I can keep it to myself but I must share my incredible experience at this place. I have stayed here many times and this is a definite comeback place for me. The rooms are very clean and well maintained. The kitchenette has all the basic things you would need to make meals because the nearest store is over an hour away. Although it is a beach rental, you can ask your host, Van, to surprise you with a fancy meal. He is a gourmet chef. Who would have thought that I've had the best pizza in the jungles of Matapalo! He can entertain you with countless stories and give you helpful tips to make your stay enjoyable. You can just hang out here all day long and watch the toucans, monkeys, macaws, sloths, bats, etc pass by. And to cool off, the beach is just steps away. Tucanterra provides me with a place of healing and laughter.

We have visited Tucan Terra in the rainy season, the dry season, under the full moon and the darkness of the new moon. It is always an incredible experience. This year our daughter joined us. She said "I know you tried to explain this place to me, but there really isn't any way to adequately describe it." You too will be amazed by the warmth, the wonders, and your host. Van is a warm and wonderful human being. His knowledge and experience will serve you well during your visit. In addition to helping you plan the activities that will enhance and maximize your Osa adventure, he will cook for you too. Treat yourself and request a meal or two. Van's cooking is delicious and memorable. Prepare to have the wildest most civilized jungle experience possible.

We spent 4 nights at Tucan Terra and had a great time. We were on the top floor, very spacious terrace with an open kitchen where the white faced monkeys regulary come when they smell your breakfast ! and the howler monkeys who live on the tree behind will make sure you are awake at 5:15 in the morning so you cannot miss the sunrise !
The rooms are equiped with mosquito nets and a small fan on top of the bed. The place is ran on solar panel but you will always have hot water as it is a gaz heater.
We would not get enough of the view overlooking the garden and the sea .
Van was a very nice host, we appreciated that we could use the kayaks and surf boards free of charge.
Matapalo is really in the middle of nowhere, not so far from Puerto Jimenez but what a road...probably the worst in the country, driving 4x4 is a must.

Room Tip: top floor for a better view

Tucan Terra was by far the highlight of our month long trip to Costa Rica. Not knowing too much of what to expect beforehand, our experience at Van's exceeded all of our dreams. The wildlife passing right through the gardens in front of the guest house was more abundant and more frequent than anywhere else we went. The birds, the trees, the plants the marine and terrestrial wildlife proved we were right in the heart of the amazing untouched nature the Osa Peninsula is known for. While your eyes are still following the white-faced capuchins, one of four different monkey species found on the Osa, your ears are distracted by the Tucans, Howler monkeys and Scarlet Macaws passing overhead.
Whether lying in a hammock listening and watching all this happen, riding the waves on a surfboard/kayak at one of numerous gorgeous beaches, or hiking through the rainforrest following a stream up to beautiful waterwalls all within easy walking distance is how you like to spend your time, Tucan Terra offers it.
But what really made our stay so memorable and makes us want to go back there every day, is the limitless hospitality shown by Van and the family of Negro the caretaker. With as much privacy as we could possibly want, we still found ourselves spending many evenings listening to Van's amazing stories, sharing his deliciously prepared dinners and sitting enjoying cocktails until well after dark. Van, thank you for everything!

We had the immense pleasure of staying at Van's for two weeks over the Thanksgiving holiday. My girlfriend and I came to Matapalo for a relaxing vacation of surf and wildlife. Tucan Terra is on the water and looks east over the Golfo Dulce. You get the most brilliant sunrises coming up over the mountains that divide Costa Rica and Panama. Being so close to Corcavado National Park, the wildlife that roams through Van's yard and surrounding area is abundant to say the least. Hundreds of different types of birds, all four types of monkey's that live on the Osa, and thousands of other critters can be seen from the deck of your room. We were lucky enough to arrive right after the new dinning area was completed and were treated to Van's incredible talents from the kitchen (the banana cream pie was especially delicious). Van has been building his own piece of paradise here for almost 20 years. He is a legend with many entertaining stories from before most tourists ever considered adventuring to this old gold mining area. He is also very helpful when you want to arrange a tour. From guided bird watching, tree climbing, waterfall repelling, to surfing, Van knows all the best guides and most live within walking distance from his house.
The property is a site to behold. His care taker Negro, along with his family, work tirelessly to keep the gardens looking spectacular. Negro's family lives on the property and is in charge of closing the gates at night after all guests have returned from the evenings adventures.
You will not regret staying here. It is by far the best private accomodations in Matapalo with the best host in Matapalo.
