The drive to the lake is just as breathtaking as the lake itself. We hired a driver so that we could take in the awe inspiring views but you can also get to the lake by cable car (a must in the winter when the lake hosts the Ice hotel). We spent about 4 hours at the Lake and climbed up one of the mountain faces to see a secondary lake tucked behind one of the hills. The weather was lovely but it can get a bit chilly when climbing due to the wind – also make sure you are wearing practical shoes as there is a lot of shale and it can be quite tricky to navigate if you don’t have shows with any grip. There is a restaurant on site where the food is average but sitting on the terrace on a hot summers day soon makes up for that. I recommend driving through the tunnel to the other side of the Transfagaran as the mountains seem more imposing on this side and the road is just as interesting to navigate
