“Enjoying the views with Untravelled Paths”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

The drive to the lake is just as breathtaking as the lake itself. We hired a driver so that we could take in the awe inspiring views but you can also get to the lake by cable car (a must in the winter when the lake hosts the Ice hotel). We spent about 4 hours at the Lake and climbed up one of the mountain faces to see a secondary lake tucked behind one of the hills. The weather was lovely but it can get a bit chilly when climbing due to the wind – also make sure you are wearing practical shoes as there is a lot of shale and it can be quite tricky to navigate if you don’t have shows with any grip. There is a restaurant on site where the food is average but sitting on the terrace on a hot summers day soon makes up for that. I recommend driving through the tunnel to the other side of the Transfagaran as the mountains seem more imposing on this side and the road is just as interesting to navigate

“A very scenic and picturesque spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

The drive to this spot is a little challenging as unfortunately the road is not too well maintained. However, the views are more than rewarding all along the way to the top.
The air is fresh, the views are great (yes I know I already said that :-) ).
If you intend to visit make sure you find out in advance if the road is open as sometimes due to the weather it could be closed due to snow even during late spring time.
There is this annoying parking charge you need to pay but don't let that spoil your visit to this beautiful place. It is a shame there is also a bit of litter laying around and spoiling a bit of the view.
However, on the way to the lake there are also a few small and yet picturesque waterfalls which are very tempting to stop and take a few pictures.
Allow yourself plenty of time because the road is full of serpentines and hence requires you to drive at a relatively low speed. Plus, you'll want to perhaps stop several times along the way to take some nice pics. Did I mention the views are great???

“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

Wow! Romania has such a fantastic place to visit. The Lake, the mountains and the clouds make an unreal picture. Transfagarasan is the most popular road on the world; see Top Gear.

“Fog is very typical”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

You have to be lucky to see it in nonfoggy weather. I visited two time the location, never been so lucky to see the lake in sunshine. The surrounding of lake is dissapointing - but in some way is typical to tourist spots. Some garbage in the unpaved car parking place, loud manele music is coming from the miserable fast food restaurants. Better take one of the restaurants nearby the lake (sorry, cannot remember the name of it, was the closest one nearby - 30 meters - going uphill from the parking place). You will be not dissapointed. Clean, nice staff, little bit overpriced, but is not dramatically more expensive compared to typical urban places in Romania.

“too exploited to enjoy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

Kids charging you to park, don't even know if it is legal. Parts around the lake is littered. The road there is fantastic, but the visit to the lake was disappointing.
