“Luxury is gift offered by the nature”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2011

Luxury is a gift offered by the nature and our definition of luxury is not only a 5 stars hotel. Onar is a great place if you wish to rest, resource yourself and enjoy the nature.
Our single house double bed room was big, with two very nice terraces and the open air restaurant concept is very friendly, furthermore the owner Mateo and his staff offer a very agreable and smily service. We wil be back.

It has not become any easier to find the appropriate place for an uncomplicated family holiday in Greece, especially if one is Greek herself and knows exactly what to avoid and what to look for. I admit that the standards are very high. Nature at her purest form, crystal blue waters, open bay, children-friendly sandy beach, good accomodation and reliable service, solitude and peace and yet not complete isolation from the assets of "civilisation" in times of need.
When I started the search last winter for the ideal summer resort for us three, the major concern had been to locate the ideal place for the family of one little girl, making sure that there would have been enough shady alternatives for the midday hours. My sister's tip led me to the website of Onar on the island of Andros, the documentation of which left me breathless. The location is absolutely magnificent and there are hardly many other natural spots with such a low key and yet appealing infrastructure. To be honest I do not know any.
Arriving at the port of Andros, one needs about 1 hour to reach Onar, half an hour dirty road included. Driving down the dirty road is a highlight itself, as one gets gradually acquainted with the scenery and the Onar housing. After you are there, there is hardly any need to leave the place, the owner and passionate manager Mateo Pantzopoulos has thought really everything through, from breakfast to lunch and dinner service, grocery and other shopping orders taken care of by the particularly friendly team. You are enjoying your peace but you don't feel left alone at the grace of your fate.
Don't get me wrong about the low key infrastructure. The few houses - all unique in their decoration and setting - leave no wish unfulfilled. The low key refers to the non wildly heretic building policy which has been the curse of greek tourism in the past decades and which has destroyed numerous spots of remarkable natural beauty. There is a little house for every need: couples, families, bigger families, friends e.a.
Onar is 10 minutes walking distance away from the Ahla Beach of Andros and doesn't interfere with the natural environment at all. Following the river under the shady trees towards the bay adds to the unparalleled experience of the place. The landscape around is a temptation for hikers and nature lovers and we caught ourselves making plans about the years to come when the girls are older and adventure riper.
Onar is a personal accomplishment of the owner Mateo, whose vision we hope will be able to survive in time undisturbed by the occasional idiocy of some people among us, people with no sense for nature and proportion. Mateo is the guarantee for that.
We left Onar wondering about our next stay, being almost ambivalent about spreading the word.
One wants after all to keep his personal treasures to himself.

Onar is true Paradise in the middle of nature. Located in a beautiful valley directly at a wonderful, lonely (5 min. walking) bay, this is a perfect place to relax and a real hide away. We spent our honeymoon there, just perfect! However, keep in mind that you need 1h to the next village- for us this was perfect.

Onar is one those rare places that comes to those who really need it. In our case it provided much-welcome respite from the urban rat race and catered perfectly well to our slightly warped notion of 'the simple life away from it all'. Hence, we had one of the most beautiful beaches we had ever been to as well as a valley full of the wonders of nature on our doorstep, but at the same time didn't have to live without our creature comforts such as excellent food, great service, hot showers, tv, i-pod dock etc. The week of our stay saw very strong winds sweeping into the valley, which made it somewhat less of a beach holiday than anticipated, but that did not make it any less enjoyable. Faced with this wonderful 'simplicity' our daughter turned into a wildlife explorer in no time, finding beauty and things to play with in apparently everything. Brought-along toys quickly became redundant and bedtime became a forum for storytelling rather than reading. Being cut off (in our case due to the wrong choice of car to tackle the road into Onar) meant that we were faced with the true challenge of being away from it all: just being-which is what Onar is really about. I had excellent reception on my Blackberry, but by the end of the week it couldn't have mattered less to me that I even had a phone with an email account and that's what I came for. The amenities help to facilitate this, but really, this is about taking in what's around you, enjoying the fact that it exists and that you can be a part of it.

Having not been on a beach holiday for sometime and wanting to get away from the stress of working life, my partner and I found Onar on http://www.i-escape.com/ and not only were the photos and location amazing... but also the ease at which we could email the manager Mateo and book the holiday all via the website was great! To get to Onar, we flew to Athens, and took a taxi to the port of Rafina. From there it was a 2 hour ferry trip to Gavrio (Andros) and as we wanted to see the island as well as stay at Onar, we hired a 4x4 jeep at Gavrio (as advised by Mateo as the last part of the route is off the beaten track)... Once we arrived at Onar in the evening, it was magical. An area of 6 villas in the bottom of a valley (all lit up with little lights) and it was five minutes walk to the most amazing beach. Our villa was tastefully decorated, including a lounge area, rear and front patio, satellite TV, ensuite bathroom, and little kitchenette. We had thought that some days we could cook in our villa, but since the food was so good and excellent value at the restaurant we only did it once. The service and hospitality was second to none. The staff were very friendly, and Mateo's infectious enthusiastic character was very welcoming. He was very informative of places to go and suggested many options for us. This included renting a boat from the local town of Chora and visiting many untouched beaches, driving to various monastaries, various walks, towns and scenic routes. After the 10 days we are completely relaxed and we're very thankful to all of the staff at Onar for making our holiday a truely unfortgetable one! :)

Room Tip: All villas are great!

In the depth of a major, early snowfall last winter in Scotland we read a review of Andros in one of the weekend supplements of the Scotsman newspaper in which Onar was highlighted (http://news.scotsman.com/travel/Travel-Andros-Greece-.6616091.jp) and decided that this was the holiday for us. Well, we were not disappointed.
This is just the most amazing holiday setting with the most delightful people you could possibly hope to encounter.
Onar is off the beaten track, close to a wonderful secluded beach which is a short walk away along a picturesque river. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous with ancient chapels and olive groves in abundance. In May, when we were there, the flower meadows were in full bloom and walks in the local area will be remembered for a long time. Not one for those who require a hedonistic lifestyle Onar is a place where you can relax and forget about the cares of the world. For those who need to remain 'connected' there is internet access which is more than adequate.
The accommodation in Onar consists of a small number of individual villas that have been built with local stone. The interior of the house that we rented was furnished tastefully and to a high standard. This villa (like all others) had satellite TV with the movie channels predominantly in English. The villa we rented had front and back patios which caught morning and evening sunshine respectively and I could see that all other villas were similarly situated to maximise shade / sun. An air conditioning unit helped keep the interior of the villa at a good temperature.
The service provided was of the highest standard. The enthusiasm of the owner was shared by the staff all of whom were extremely friendly and keen that we enjoyed our stay in Onar. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was the probably the best we have had in Greece (Bravo Zeta!). Honey was from local bee-keepers and as far as I could see much of the produce was sourced locally or grown on site.
Downsides – none. Andros is about 2 hours from Rafina on the ferry. You should arrange to be picked up at the port by a taxi to take you to Onar. This can be arranged when you book. Enjoy the ride and the spectacular views. It is possible to rent a car if you wish to see more of the island as we had planned to but once in Onar, well, why bother!
There are still a lot of places in the world that we need to visit but Onar is somewhere that we will definitely return to. Makis Pantzapoulos has created something very special.

I have visited most of the so-called "superb" hotels in Greece, but Onar is something else. In a place where nature gives its best, hidden from the noise of civilization, you can relax, taste great food, enjoy one of the best beaches in Greece, stay in comfortable and spacious private houses/rooms where good taste is evident. The staff is extremely polite and helpful while the feeling of belonging in "onar society" makes even the most "closed" characters to feel open and free.
Since it takes more than an hour drive to visit the town of Andros, at the beggining you might feel a bit isolated. But after a few hours you feel you don' t want to be anywhere else in the world. The owner of the place has this special charisma that makes you wonder if you are his special guest. By the time of check out, the only thought that passes through your mind, is your next visit!
