“Amazing food - service needs improvement”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

I have eaten at the Next three times. Each time I have been very impressed by the quality of the meals: they have been truly excellent - and I am a harsh critic! The restaurant offers an amazing variety of dishes. West Ottawa/Kanata offers virtually no other options for this type of meal
: certainly the Brookstreet (Perspectives) has faded recently. However, the uneven quality of the service diminishes the experience. There is an inadequate number
of servers, which means very long waits and much "ball-dropping". For example, at the New Year's Eve dinner, we never received the second glass of wine that had been included in the fixed price menu. Nonetheless, I will continue to eat here because of the great food! Just be prepared for the slow service.

“A PEARL IN SUBURBIA”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

In a previous review, I suggested that the best and only really fine dining experience to be found in Ottawa's 'Far-West' end would be "Perspectives" in the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata. Well, guess what? It now has competition in the form of "Next" Restaurant, well-hidden in the depths of neighbouring Stittsville. Don't write it off for that reason, though. You see, one of the partners in this new endeavour and Executive Chef is none other than Michael Blackie, formerly of the aforementioned Brookstreet Hotel and, more recently, executive chef at Ottawa's National Arts Centre!
Formerly the Celebration Centre, "Next" has been made over into a banquet, meeting room, catering, restaurant and takeout enterprise, describing its restaurant fare as "casual dining." Our first experience of "Next" was in the banquet category when invited to a local realtor's year-end spread for customers and friends. So impressed were we with the imaginative appetizers churned out endlessly in the visible and spotless kitchen that we came back for the full dining experience.
“Next” specializes in ‘small plates,’ several of which are shared and so imaginative and tasty that one is quickly sated. Among our choices were: Tom Ka Gai soup, served quaintly in mini teapots, prawn pot-stickers, emmenthal cheese and STS chorizo pan-melter, mussels steamer, to which we added shared “bashed” mini-potatoes and house-cut fries with truffle mayo and, to conclude, Tahitian vanilla crème brulee. To make the outing even more attractive and affordable, by going early in the week and booking online, we benefitted from a 20% reduction."Next" also offers an attractive Sunday brunch for two called "The Board."
If we had anything negative to say, it would be that the somewhat banquet hall configuration felt slightly cold and sterile in terms of atmosphere and that the location is somewhat out of the way for Ottawa diners, and that, especially on a quiet night, the service was a bit slow. However, congratulations to Blackie and to Chef de Cuisine, Matt Hall, for the excellent initiative and exciting offerings in an area not known for truly gastronomic experiences.

“A fabulous gourmet extravaganza! Worth the drive to Stittsville!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

Our group of three families (11 in total) were referred to this restaurant by another Ottawa-area restaurant unable to accommodate our reservation request. What a lucky break for us!

We arrived at this unassuming looking building, located kind of in the middle of nowhere, and were warmly greeted and shown into the sophisticated, sleek dining room.

Our waiter offered us the option of a "group dinner" - for $49 each we were promised that we'd be fed the chef's favourites until we were stuffed. We decided to opt for this adventurous form of dinner.

It was a great choice. We were provided with 10 different courses in all - an antipasto-cheese plate, a mango salad, a Thai soup shooter for each of us, mussels in wine/cream broth, chicken morsels, duck confit, lamb shank and short rib, followed by platters of tasting size portions of 6 different desserts.

Every dish was amazing. The presentation was beautiful. The 11 of us shared three or four servings of each dish, and the timing was perfect. Just a little break between each course to allow the food to settle.

In all, the meal took three hours and we were absolutely stuffed, but agreed it was the most amazing dining experience we'd ever had.

Our only complaint... if we'd known what fabulous dishes were ahead of us, we'd have skipped the bread entirely.

“Easy, stress free Christmas dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013 via mobile

We had 8 friends including two children over for Christmas dinner . We ordered dinner for ten a few days ago. My husband went to pick it up at 3:30. Everything was ready including a very efficient delivery system at Next - he didn't even have to get out of the car . Everything packaged in foil pans ready to stick in the oven to reheat . The turkey was a magnificent bird, perfectly cooked, moist and flavourful. Veggies (carrots and green and yellow beans) still had a lovely bit of crunch left . Mashed potatoes were divine. Gravy looked and tasted like there was a bit of whole grain mustard in it , just enough to make it interesting. There was an animated discussion at dinner as to whether the bread stuffing should be called a dressing rather than stuffing, but all agreed that it was delicious. Lots went back for seconds. The final act was a traditional mince meat pie that was a real hit with the guests . Well the whole meal was a big hit with the guests, and the hosts who were very happy to have had a relaxing day. And we have the leftovers!
Thank you very much Mr and Mrs Blackie, you may have just started a new Christmas tradition in our house!
