“Nice hotel - convenient to everything”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

This hotel is a very pleasant surprise! We booked on Hotwire for one night pre-cruise and it really exceeded our expectations.

After a long flight - redeye from SFO to connection through MIA - we were tired and the proximity to the airport is a real plus. Also, the front desk was so kind to give us a room mid-morning when we arrived as they had one free. Our room was right next to the pool which we enjoyed. Nice little pool with water features that make it really relaxing. Nice jacuzzi. We had cute chairs in front our our room so we came back after dinner and just had a drink with a view of the pool.

The rooms are old but renovated adequately. There was a mini fridge and flat screen. Found the bed to be completely comfortable. For the price, was a deal as PR can be quite expensive during high season.

We did not dine there but the restaurants looked very pleasant. We did get drinks at the bar which was very affordable and appeared to have a pretty good menu for bar snacks.

Our credit card was stolen at a restaurant down by the beach at lunch so we ran back to the hotel to cancel it and they were super helpful and summoned the police on our behalf to file a report.

There are lots of taxis out front so it's very easy to get to the cruise port early.

Overall, I'd definately stay here again. Although I wonder if the area of Isla Verde is all that safe? Not sure about that so much - but that has nothing to do with the hotel - it's great.

Room Tip: The rooms next to the pool are great if you plan to swim.

This hotel is an excellent choice. We were not happy with our first room because of the scent of perfume. My husband has allergies. We brought this to their attention and were immediately given another room. The hotel has four restaurants and all four offer delicious food. We tried them all. They also have a wine bar which we loved. The grounds are kept immaculate. We would definitely go back. If your looking for beach front this is not the place, you may have walk two blocks. The casinos are within walking distance. Loved it, good choice.

We liked the hotel & their staff; we only stayed 1 night and the only time we were in & around the hotel was in the evening & early morning, so here is my summary:
Positive - easy to get on & off the highway, close to the beach, clean room with flat TV, coffee maker & minifridge, corner room had 2 sides of windows. Self-parking - relatively cheap for the hotels on Isla Verde. Within a walking distance (8 minutes) of Metropol Cuban/PR restaurant. Computer in the lobby for printing boarding passes...
Negative - Very small Bath/shower+toilet room, thin walls, heavy drapes cannot be closed, so the city's light filters through - might be a problem for light sleepers..?

Room Tip: I would pick the tower rooms - perhaps they are used less frequently or were renovated; quiet A/C

We booked our family of nine into five rooms at the Verdanza for a total of nine days. As it turned out, we enjoyed our stay ... but we didn't expect to do so based on how we were greeted upon arrival!

We had booked (and pre-paid) our rooms months in advance. Weeks before our arrival, I'd asked for our rooms to be booked together, if possible, so the family would have easy access to each other. The day before we arrived, I called to confirm room types, a late-night check-in, and our reservation in general. It was a surprise, then, to be greeted when we arrived at 1:00 AM by a surly, unhelpful front desk clerk who unsympathetically informed us that our rooms would be scattered all over the hotel ... and not the room types we had requested. When I expressed my dissatisfaction with the situation, he said -- and this is a quote -- "You'll have to just deal with it."

As our conversation continued, he ultimately blamed Expedia for "booking the wrong kinds of rooms," but a quick call to Expedia confirmed that they had, in fact, done the right thing ... and that the hotel had not honored the request. Having no other choice, we took the rooms we were given, including one next to a noisy elevator shaft and one with a non-working air conditioner. Another of the rooms had bad water stains on the ceiling and smelled of mildew.

The next morning, the front desk staff was far more helpful -- and in less than an hour, we were in the kinds of rooms we had reserved, all of which were acceptable.

The rest of the week here was very pleasant. Angel and others at the valet parking stand provided quick service, no matter how often we came and went during the day. The day staff at the front desk is friendly and helpful, as is the evening staff. (Avoid the young man on the late shift -- the one with the shaved head -- at all costs, though; he really shouldn't be allowed to interact with guests at all.)

Dinner at the Asian restaurant on the property was moderately priced and quite good; as it turns out, this is one of the highest rated Asian eateries in Isla Verda. Stick to the basics and you'll be quite pleased. We found breakfasts in Eighty20 Bistro to be merely adequate (they were often out of puzzling items, like waffle batter), and not a good value for the price, and soon began leaving the property each morning to explore other options.

That said: we did enjoy poolside drinks and late night dessert at Eighty20, especially when Carlos, a young man from New York, was our server. He was engaging, helpful, personable, and full of good ideas about what to do while in PR. Yohani, another of the servers, took good care of us during breakfast and in the afternoons. She and Carlos should be put in charge of teaching other staff members customer service ... as others simply didn't seem to care, one way or the other, what was going on.

This hotel is very close to a good (if busy) beach, which is literally just two blocks away and very easily accessible. The hotel provides towels for your use.

In the end, despite the rocky beginning, the Verdanza proved to be a fine base of operations for us. Its location is quite good, and, compared to what the large resort hotels are charging, it's quite a value. That said: for $160 a night (what we paid this trip), we've stayed in far nicer properties, with fewer issues with rooms and service.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the poolside rooms, not in the tower.

We were not expecting anything special: just a clean room and a decent experience with the staff. Unfortunately, this hotel didn't provide either. Although it says it was renovated 3 years ago, the rooms are just acceptable while the bathrooms are horrible. They're tiny and old (ours did not look at all renovated - rusty tub, mildew on walls, very low water pressure, stains on walls). There was no internet in our room, and when we called to let them know, we didn't get any help, only insistence that the internet was functioning. The elevators malfunctioned (doors rattled while traveling, consistently stopped on the wrong floor, etc). The veranda we were supposed to have was barely the width of a person, so a chair certainly couldn't fit there. And terrible service at check in, at breakfast (try getting coffee in their restaurant), at their coffee place, over the phone... you name it. The staff was courteous, but incredibly incompetent and generally unwilling to help. In some cases, they simply made up answers that later turned out to be patent lies. I recommend staying away from this hotel; there are many alternatives in the area.

We just returned from Puerto Rico and our stay at the Verdanza was wonderful once again. We choose this hotel because of its location and great service. This hotel is located in the heart of Isla Verde only a walk away to the prettiest beach in the San Juan area. We enjoy the friendly staff that makes you feel special as soon as you walk in the door. Service is always great, Beautiful lobby and a wonderful Wine Bar which we enjoy every time we stay at the Verdanza. A nice quite hotel great for families with restaurants to choose from and a coffee area which offers great coffee and a very nice pool area designed for children as well as adults.

We spent 3 nights, the hotel lobby is quite nice, the rooms are in serious need of an update, despite the flatscreen TVs. Staffing at the lobby was variable, at times well trained and helpful. At the busy check-out times, quite slow and uncoordinated. Rooms have small, rusty bathrooms, but nice balconies and fridges with coffee makers. Be aware that cab fare to Old San Juan is $25 each way.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony
