“Wonderful surprise at a good price!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2007

We spent 5 days/4 nights at Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde in mid-March 2007 as a getaway for our wedding anniversary. The price was great for this time of year. We had read mostly good reviews, but were surprised at just how much we enjoyed the hotel, property and service!

The beach was wonderful and very large. Comfy loungers are set up as you get your towels. We walked east and there was no one around, if you wish some privacy. To the west was the Ritz, and their beach was a joke in comparison. We had a nice amount of waves to play in, but nothing dangerous. The no-see-um bugs are around, so be sure to put on bug repellent from your knees down. We did not and had a few bites, but nothing I hadn't gotten in Florida or South Carolina.

The pool was fine and not crowded. (It was high season too, I think.) Looked great for kids. We lounged around the pool and had a drink at the swim up bar. Paradise.

The airplane noise is there, though I guess you have to determine what you are expecting. If you want silence and peace, go find a secluded cabin rather than a resort. We were ready for it and did not find the noise objectionable at all. Thanks to the wonderful oceanfront room upgrade, if we had our sliding door open, the ocean noise drowned out almost all airplane noise. Would one complain that the ocean is too noisy?

The breakfast buffet was bountiful and complete. Made-to-order omelets and waffles, along with a nice variety of warm items including good sausage and bacon. The cold items had eveything one could wish for, and a very wide variety of juices (good OJ!) left one wanting for nothing. The price is your call, as I end up pigging out to get my money's worth, then needed a good nap by the pool. But that's vacation!!

Our only minor complaint was the wait staff service at Picante early in the week. Not sure why we were ignored so, but what can one do. We found some of the same kind of service at a couple other restaurants in this tourist area, so perhaps that's the way things are. The Manager's Reception was exactly the opposite, where the food was good and plentiful, the service was outstanding and the mojitos were addictive. (To one of us anyway...) Maybe tipping accordingly will get their attention for the next time? Again, only a minor issue, as there were plenty of other places to try. (We had a great meal and service in Old San Juan.)

Conversely, Mr. Caban and the entire C by M staff could have not treated us better. I'm not sure what we will do for next year's anniversary, but the bar has been set high after this excellent experience. We will be back to see you soon, Yodil. Mucho gracias and best wishes on future expansion!!

Perfect place!! It is awesome since it is the last hotel on the strip so when you're on the beach-which by the way, was the cleanest in comparison to the other hotels' beaches-you don't feel "crammed-in" with the other hotels around you!! It was absolutely beautiful, never crowded, staff was so helpful, friendly, engaging...TOP NOTCH!!!!

yes, you do hear the planes some, but it is not constant and being that we were out sightseeing a lot-not a problem and then when we were there, it was once-in-awhile and for an instant...never did it interfer with my relaxing!!

BEAUTIFUL grounds-the landscaping is impeccable, the hotel and all around was super clean and I really enjoyed staying here for my last 3 days-of my almost 9 day-vacation!!

  • Liked — GREAT location, staff were the best, beautiful grounds/beach
  • Disliked — nothing-it was fabulous!!

We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights in April while we explored Puerto Rico. If this Courtyard was located anywhere other than near the San Juan airport, it would be rated a 4-star Marriott. The hotel is very nice and has the amenties and small touches you would expect from a more expensive beach resort: quality linens; comfortable beach chairs; cozy hammocks for 2, shaded by nearby palm trees; several on-site restaurants; its own (very clean) beach; large swimming pool with a swim-up bar, and more. Our room was large and clean, and our outdoor patio faced a lovely stretch of beach. For us, it was well worth the tradeoff of the flights, which in truth didn't even bother us. We would definitely recommend this hotel. Request a room facing west, on an upper floor, when you make a reservation.

This was our third time in San Juan. The first two times we stayed on the Condado. This time we wanted to be on the beach so we chose Isla Verde and the Courtyard by Marriott. When our room was not ready at check-in time of 3P.M., we were immediately upgraded to an ocean front room on the fouth floor. The view was spectacular. The bathroom could have used a little updating but it was clean. The staff at the hotel was more than accommodating. We loved the casino, where we won over $600. The only down side was that all the casinos were closed on Good Friday until noon on Saturday. I am anxiously awaiting my next trip to San Juan. My husband is already looking for an Christmas trip but the prices then are much higher!! I would definitely recommend Courtyard By Marriott in Isla Verde.

They are trying very hard to be an upscale resort. They are trying very hard to provide service. In many cases they succeed. Many of the employees do an excellent job. Our kids had a great time. But there are a lot of little annoying things that prevent this from truly being a high class place.

For instance, they gave us coupons for free drinks at a restaurant. The drinks were not served full size and then as a kicker, the drink charges showed up on the final bill and the front desk made it painful to have the charges removed. The soda machines on each floor were empty. Some of the servers at the snack bar didn't understand English well enough so got the orders wrong. The coffeemaker leaked all over the place. And you can't hear this from the room, but the airport is so close that landing planes are super duper loud out on the beach. The greasy kitchen smell permeates the balconies of the rooms on the west and north sides of the tower.

But on the plus side, the food at the sit-down restaurants was better than many hotels. And the atmosphere at the restaurants was nice. And an upside of the occasional poor service was a delicious and large free breakfast at the buffet. And other restaurants are a short walk from the hotel.

Beach. The first 10 meters or so of surf are rough with a strong current, but once you get past this, there is a flat pan of soft sand that goes out hundreds of yards. Anybody can stand here and have fun in the waves safely.

There are tiny little bugs you can't see that will drive you crazy if you don't have insect repellent. The hotel provides it for free, but the towel booth where you can get spritzed is closed early in the morning and at night.

They're trying to be luxury, but are not quite there yet.

First of all, the jet noise! Instantly annoying, it becomes entertaining. Check in was a breeze. The oceanfront upgrade is worth it. Nice view. The staff is very helpful.

The pool area is a little small, but it is clean and partially shaded. Very nice landscaping. Keep your eyes peeled for Iguanas and other assorted lizards. A nice distraction.

The beach area is large, clean and does offer some shade. The hammocks are a bonus.

About food and drink; At check in you’ll get drink vouchers to use at the hotel. A nice touch. Most cocktails are reasonable, but beer is in 10oz. cans. The buffets at Papaya and the outdoor grill are over-priced. Instead, Sirena seems a bit more worth it. You can easily make a right and walk to Denny’s for a very cheap b’fast. Opposite Denny’s is the Metropol for dinner(local flavor). A bit furthur is the El San Juan, with more restaurants.

You can catch the A5 bus ($0.75)to Old San Juan for sight seeing and shopping, a 30 min. trip. A taxi is $20 and 15min.

We had a terrific week and would recommend to friends.

My husband and I along with our 2 kids (ages 6 & 7) just returned from a 7 day stay last night. WE LOVED IT and can not wait to go back. Excellent service from the minute you step off the cab and throughout your stay!! Thank you Mr Caban for the gorgeous oceanfront suite. We loved it!!
This hotel is just steps away from the ocean with great ammenities. We ventured off on the island and saw some top resorts but this is the place to stay and as close to a lovely beach as you can get. We will be back next year for another week stay.
Our kids loved the yummy treats (fresh cookies, ice cream and etc) at Bananas in the Lobby and I enjoyed my morning iced latte made with Puerto Rican coffee there without having a starbucks. Jean at the concierge desk with a lovely smile and a friendly attitude is ready to guide you to great restaurants and fun things to do. The minute you step on the beach, there are staff ready to set up lounge chairs, cabanas and get you drinks/food from the poolside bar/grill (Papayas). Loved sipping on our awesome Pina Coladas made by Luise the bartender at the swim up bar!!
Rooms were very clean and serviced each day before we returned from the beach. The room had an oceanfront suite with 2 comfortable large queen size beds, large flat screen TV. We listened to the ocean sounds just steps away from our room. Talk about service...each time we requested anything from guest services, we received a follow-up phone call within 10-15 minutes to assure that our needs have been met and that we are enjoying our stay. GREAT MANAGEMENT and customer service!!
All the locals recommended Metropol for good authentic Puerto Rican/cuban food. It is a very casual place within 5 minutes walking distance from the hotel and we went back several times for the tasty cuban pepper steak and shrimp with garlic sauce. You get lots of food for as little as $10-15 per person.
Within walking distance you can rent all kinds of watersports for a very reasonable price (sailing on hobbie cats for 1/2 hr @ $25 and jet skiing for 1/2 hr for $65). OUR FAMILY CAN NOT WAIT TO GO BACK FOR ANOTHER MEMORABLE STAY AT THIS HOTEL. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
