“Go to Hato Verde!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

I can't say enough about Hato Verde. We stayed three nights and in that time we really felt at home and welcomed. Maria and Cesar made sure that we had every opportunity that we needed....and we didn't really know what that was until we got there. It is a great spot to hike up Cotopaxi (bring warm clothes--we didn't but our guide Marcelo took good care of us) Maria and Cesar set up a fun horse ride with guides MarieJose and Filipe. This is great! "Our" room was at the front of the hacienda and looked over the courtyard--it was perfect for us. We loved the horses, cows and other animals on the property. We would return in a heartbeat and maybe we will.....we didn't get to Quilatoa....this was on the list! Next time!

We stayed two nights at the Hacienda Hato Verde and just loved it! Our room was in the front of the hacienda and was so bright and sunny. We had dinner both nights here and the food was delicious. Maria & Cesar are wonderful hosts. Maria was very helpful in organizing a hiking trip to Quilotoya and Cotopaxi. Cesar joined us for dinner on both nights and he was a delightful and entertaining host. We would highly recommend a stay at this charming inn.

Room Tip: We were able to see all the rooms and would have been happy to stay in any of them.

The room we were given was small but comfortable with lovely warm beds and good quality bedding. The room was however cold until the stove was lit, it would have been nice if that could have been done when we arrived. It was also impossible to read after dark as the lighting was so poor. The hacienda was overall cold with only a fire in the lounge.
My main disappointment however was the food. The owner tried to tell us that the dinner was typical Ecuadorian food but a small piece of chicken cooked in breadcrumbs with rice is what we would expect in a cheap restaurant anywhere in South America. For the second day we went out to lunch so that we would not be hungry that night. The meal was marginally better but was the kind of home cooking that I would not serve to guests.
All in all I felt that profit margins rather than hospitality were the main concern, there was enough shampoo (just) for one person to was their hair, at beakfast juice was poured out and then removed and minimal amounts of jam were put on the table. Whilst we could ask for more, the member of staff rarely came out of the kitchen.
All in all we were not made to feel welcome.

The setting is wonderful, at the footsteps of the highest active volcano in the world, Cotopaxi. With a beautiful interior decor that sets the ambiance for a relaxed stay, great tasting food for breakfast & dinner, fresh produce from the garden, great wine and a wonderful company from Hostess & owners César & María del Rosario, make your stay a wonderful experience. Lots of activities to do on your own or with their help. We highly recommend this beautiful hacienda hotel-boutique for couples and singles who want to get away from it all with a fabulous view of nature. We enjoyed our stay so much!
Thanks Hato Verde!

Another great Hacienda. Beautiful grounds and first class rooms. Maria the owner was very nice and took great care of all the guests. Dinner was served in the dining room and the food was excellent with local products. Very fresh!

We enjoyed our stay here very much. The room and bed was comfortable, and bathroom more than adequate. The house is interesting, and we were made to feel very much at home by the owners. The food was very good; we ate in the hacienda all three nights of our stay and had good, varied food each evening. Nothing was too much trouble for the proprietors, even a 6 30 am breakfast. Handy for Cotopaxi national park and Quilatoa. Highly recommended!

Hacienda Hato Verde is located a short distance from the Pan American Highway. It is a little oasis for the region, with a beautiful old building surrounded by a fence enclosing many cows. The interior is beautiful, the building being partially built of volcanic pumice (very interesting!). The hospitality was top notch, and the dinner delicious. We very much enjoyed our visit to the Hacienda!
