“Two night stay .”

Had a deal through groupon , when I done the route planner for some reason it takes you to the wrong place so I would advise sat nav using the post code , It is over two mile to walk to bowness and no paths so we used taxis £ 9.00 one way , no issues with checking in or checking out , room was ok but no bath , breakfast was nice and the staff very friendly especially the young chap who rang a pub in bowness to check the rugby was on .

First of all we would like to thank the young lady that I believe was going to uni to become a teacher. She was so attentive to our needs& very jolly in the morning which bought a sense of sparkle to the atmosphere. She was very helpful& deserves a pat on the back! Booked through a wowcher deal for a romantic valentines weekend&could not be happier with the overall time we spent here! There were a few hiccups with the hot water at first, but the staff did go out their way to make our needs satisfactory in the end& we moved rooms. Rooms are so cute, with original features, unique styles & cute pillows. Cleaned everyday&breakfast all set up for you when you arrive! Cooked full English to cereals, yogurts, salmon& scammed egg. The food is amazing quality here! The best lamb I've ever tasted! Gorgeous views from the hotel.. Stopped in no8 in the end- has its own patio& table&chairs. Beautiful atmosphere in the pub with locals visiting as well. Great features, beams&high ceilings, very homely. If u turn right from hotel u get to Bowness- lots of parking& great shops& then just down the road is Windermere. The boat trips are in the town to take you to red, blue or yellow route- we went through Ambleside- cute vintage cafe as u get off the boat with red blankets& pillows- u can feed the ducks too. U can turn left from hotel& go up some hills- walk paths on your right- u can go on the land we asked the farmer he he- keep heading up the hills for a few miles then on your right you get some amazing views of Windermere! Overall great place! & we would definitely come back if they would have us :) thanks to the staff& hello to local joe who sits at the bar with his lap top, very friendly people xx

Don't be put off by outward appearances, the rooms are large, interesting and well appointed. This virtually self sufficient pub/hotel/restaurant was a great find. Water from it's own spring is fed to the rooms and is used in the pubs micro brewery.
A small varied menu promised a interesting dinner and the kitchen delivered. We shared the Chateaubriand, meat from the hotels own farms cooked to perfection. Good attentive service and a pleasant wine made for a good evening. Shame that the breakfast menu and service failed to live up to the same standards, we were expecting better. Really disappointing to find bulk standard sliced bread being the only bread on offer.
Hotel was also having some issues with one of its boilers resulting in issues with heating and hot water. They did however have plumber out early on the Sunday morning to have the fault rectified.
Certainly worth calling in and sampling the wares. Be prepared to be snowed in during the winter- what a dilemma! It's a great location for walks or as a base to drive out from.

Room Tip: There was no double glazing to our room at the front of the hotel, overlooking the main road through...

We booked our stay through a wow her deal last year and decided that we would use in January for a winter break. We proberbly could have chosen a better weekend for weather but we still had a great time.

We left home knowing that the snow had been bad in te area but the motorway was clear so steadily made our way to the lakes. We decided to bypass the hotel to see where. e had booked then continue on in to bowness for a couple of hours till we could check in.

The pub is located on a pretty lane about a 5 - 10 min drive from bowness.

The road was quite bad with snow but passible so around 2 pm we headed back to check in, when we walked in we were welcomed with the warmth from the wood burner and lots of very friendly people. Unfortunately there had been a power cut due tho the bad weather. Despite this all looked well and just prayed it would be back on soon.

We were shown to our beautiful room on the outside area of accommodation (room 8) these rooms are very tasteful decorated with shabby chic style furniture,& feather duvets , they also have lovely bathrooms with massive shower at one end & fluffy white towels and that was even without the power on. these rooms have beautiful views.

We headed back down tho the bar we had a drink and were made to feel very welcome by both staff and the regular customers while we waited for some power, with no mobile signal or internet we couldn't get a taxi anywhere so decided we would stay at the hotel in hope the power would soon be back and we could eat at their restaurant.

Soon enough the power was back on and we were given a table in the restuant, the food was beautiful, there are lots of reviews on the wall from food critics etc and its obviously a top class establishment. Personally we wouldn't have spent as much as wedid on the meal on a normal sat night. On the whole I would say that the food was lovely with a twist on traditional food. Service from waiters was very good and attentive.

All in all we thourarly enjoyed our stays at the brown horse and would defiantly return for another stay. Maybe next time we would choose a weekend when they haven't been hit by snow!! This is something that the hotel or us could for see and I felt for the owner as he lost alot of money that day.

One last thing , you get free passes to the low wood hotel and spa near ambleside. We used these on our last day. This is typicall hotel spa but added addition of a outdoor hot tub. Whern we used this it was about 2degrees outside so walking out was very chilly but we stepped in to a very warm cosy spa. A very nice treat that was included in our deal.

Well done brown horse 100%

After the heavy snow fall we were unsure we would even be able to travel but the roads over the Penines were OK and it was only as we approached the hotel and saw lots of abandoned cars we realised there was still a lot of snow about, we did arrive skidded around the car park and fell into a lovely warm and welcoming bar. We were told they had only just been reconnected to the power! Our room was relatively new, large light and airy filled with a lovely eclectic mix of furnishings, a small but well appointed bathroom with a large shower.

We enjoyed sampling several of the beers brewed in their own micro brewery before enjoying a fantastic 3 course meal. The flavours of the all dishes were excellent and the presentation excellent all the staff were great and made us feel most welcome. We had a very restful night and were grateful to see the majority of the snow had melted when we woke up. Breakfast was served quite early for a Sunday 8.30-9.30 but of course they have to be ready for serving lunch. The breakfast choices were good and plentiful.

We will definitely be returning to this lovely pub

Room Tip: Can't remove my rating of swimming pool - there wasn't one !!! though I believe you can use...

We stayed here with another couple using Wowcher vouchers and had originally booked for October. The Brown Horse had been very kind and accommodating allowing us to rebook due to the circumstances of one couple and now due to the weather we only stayed for one night instead of the two in the original offer. Again, Brown Horse has come to an arrangement with us about that.

We stayed in double rooms above the bar with en suite shower rooms and, once the heating was switched on, the rooms were very cosy and comfortable. They were clean and had all the usual amenities of tea/coffee making facilities, TV etc.

To be honest we didn’t spend much time in the rooms as we ensconced ourselves in the bar and didn’t move until we went into the restaurant area for dinner. We had already met the chef who was ‘minding the shop’ when we arrived and were treated to excellent food from him. We had the chateaubriand which tested his nerve as we asked for it ‘blue’ and he came out to check it was OK. It was perfect and when we return we will probably phone ahead and make sure we can repeat the experience.

Our friends both had scallops followed by lamb shank and said their meals were excellent too. We worked our way through the different Winster Valley beers available and agreed they were brilliant and reasonably priced.

Considering there were only six people at breakfast there was a good variety of juices, cereals, yogurts etc. and our Full English was cooked to order.

We were made very welcome by chef (sorry, didn’t get his name) and Craig and hope to return soon.

Went with friends on recommendation.
We had a round of drinks whilst choosing fom the menu.
Paid for at the bar.

The local beers were excellent

I opted for the steal and was not disappointed.
My wife had the Nut Roast...this was fairly average and not up to the standard of the steak.

When we asked for our bill after a pleasant evening it was lucky that we checked it out. The first round of drinks, already paid for, were on the bill.
This was soon sorted out but left one wondering if it had happened before.

The food was good and the beer great.
Just check your bill before you pay.
