“Authentic, warm, clean good Mexican Food Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

This restaurant is the warm heart of this community, largely due to the owner, Agustin, who is a generous, artistic, friendly multi-dimensional man who is everyone's friend and favorite restauranteer! The margaritas are killers, the food imaginative and beautifully-plated. Those of us who live nearby come numerous times a week and Agustin is drawing a wider and wider range of customers from Ajijic and beyond. San Juan Cosala is a small village just a few miles west of Ajijic. It is well worth the drive and you will find that once there, it is hard to leave. This restaurant is the "Cheers" of Mexico...with wonderful food thrown into the mix. Don't miss the experience of Viva Mexico. Guests who visit me always choose this restaurant as the one they want to return to. Try the mixed Mexican plates, the mocajetes--especially the ones with green sauce, the fish, filet mignon and pork shanks. Hey. Try everything!!! The flan is prepared by a local women's cooperative and is exceptional. You will love Viva Mexico. Work by local artists fills the walls and a huge mural by local artist Isidro Xilonsonchitl tells the history of the area. If you don't have a car, buses run every 15 minutes from Ajijic. Ask to get off on the street that runs by the plaza. Viva Mexico is on Porfirio Diaz just a block and a half west of the plaza. Look for the church spires. The church is opposite the plaza. Everyone will know where Viva Mexico is, so just ask!

“Lamb in banana leaf was amazing!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

Chef Augustin, speaks fluent English, and demonstrates his passion for cooking, with superb taste, and colourful explanations of his dishes.
Awesome guacamole, made only after it’s ordered. Lamb in banana leaf fell off the bone. Fajitas were also excellent.

“Muy Rico! Gracias....mmm good.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2012

VIVA MEXICO celebrates great Mexican cusine at prices that EVERYONE can afford. From the energetic, smiling young servers, to the 'head chef/owner' Agustin - you feel you are in the home and part of a big, warm Mexican family.
The decor is simple authentic Mexico, with walls covered with local artist's works and an equisite mural (also by a local artist) which will have you enjoying not just the great food... but you will also be drinking in the wonderful colourful images that surround you as you dine.
If you are in the Lakeside Area/ Chapala - do yourself the favour and visit San Juan Cosala and VIVA MEXICO - Tia Lupita! You won't be disappointed.
p.s. most of the paintings on the wall are for sale.

“Want good Mexicon fare locally: go here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2011

Ajijic is in one respect a strange place: one with a fair number of pretty posh restaurants, but not one of these specializes in mainstream Mexican fare. This is not a good thing for us who love more traditional eating out.

Viva Mexico can't practically be reached by foot from Ajijic as another reviewer explained, but the car or bus trip there is worth it. There is a very large menu of well priced traditional dishes, and they are well prepared. One minor beef: as they are dependent on a gringo clientele they have **severely** toned down the spices--even more than in a comparable restaurant in, say, California or Arizona. You can ask for higher octane but they resist...

I am giving this place five stars based chiefly on the absolute lack of any local competition. In a more absolute sense, I'd say it good mainstream fare. Make the trip.

“Delicious and authentic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2010

This is one of our favorites - especially on Sat and Sunday late afternoons when they prepare posole, pork shank and other local specialties that you won't find too often here. Mojachetes come several different ways - in a red sauce or a green sauce. Chile's en nogada are available year round - a very special dish. The owner is a delight, as is the atmosphere of this restaurant. Prices are astoundingly low for the quality and size of servings. Ask for suggestions from Augustine, the owner, for what is best that day.

Well worth the drive to San Juan Colsala, which in itself is a pleasant experience.
