This was our second visit to the Montelirio and part of a long trip from Barcelona to Cadiz, with multiple stops on the say. We remembered this hotel fondly from a previous trip and so had no hesitation in booking in again. We decided to splash out a little for these two nights and booked a suite overlooking the gorge. The room was indeed lovely with the most magnificent view. But the hotel cannot continue to rely on its position alone and I believe needs to spend some of the not-insubstantial room costs on keeping the hotel in tip top condition.
The towels were small and very thin and no longer white. The area by the pool needs a really good clean and spruce up, the pool itself is most welcome (but VERY cold) but not as clean as it could be. The terrace restaurant is good - what a view - but the table cloths and napkins needed a proper iron and the glasses needed a polish. The food was nice, but not outstanding. The breakfast was OK. These are all minor points that would take no time (or much money) to fix with some good management. This hotel should be number 1 - and could easily be.
However, the biggest problem was the air conditioning in our room. It just did not work properly. We went for a siesta and woke up in a complete sweat and then discovered that the air conditioning is on a sensor and turns itself off if it senses no movement. It had not been working all that well to begin with. We went for a swim and asked at reception for them to leave the air conditioning on while we did so as we needed to cool the room down. They did, but the room was still hot. After dinner we went back up and it was still not cool. We went to bed, and after a while my husband had to go downstairs and talk to them about it as we were far too hot to sleep - and the air con was at 'full blast', although this was barely adequate. This was about 1am. The desk clerk suggested the only thing we could do was to move hotels as theirs was full! At 1am. What a silly suggestion. The next morning, my husband went again to reception, and this time they were most apologetic and said they would not charge for the room, which was a much better solution and one which went a long way to alleviating our distress and anger. We checked out. In discussion with the receptionist that morning, it became apparent that they had had continuing problems with the air conditioning in this room that they had not been able to solve. This is what annoyed me. They should not have allowed someone to book into that room, at a cost of nearly 200 Euros per night, knowing that it is under-par.
So, a room with a view, for sure, but this hotel needs to take an honest look at itself if it wants to continue to compete in this competitive market.
You have to have a room with a view over the gorge.
