“Very nice hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2007

Very nice hotel. This is what every cute bed and breakfast in California wants to be when it grows up. The room was clean and nicely furnished; the bathrrom was clean and modern; the living room always had a fire burning and comfortable couch for browsin the library. Nice court yard where breakfast and If I remember correctly someon'es accomodations. Very pleasant staff.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2007

My husband and I could not have been more pleased with our stay at the delightful San Gabriel in romantic Ronda. Staying at the hotel was like staying at the home of a friend – one with exceptional taste. Tucked away on a narrow, orange-tree shaded street in Ronda’s old quarter, this historic whitewashed house exudes warmth and charm. When we stepped inside, my husband and I enjoyed a warm if slightly rushed greeting from the son of the owners of this family-run property. We were given directions to free parking a short walk from the hotel and led to our second-floor superior room.

Large and airy, our split-level room featured apricot colored walls, terra cotta tiled flooring, tasteful wooden furniture, and a nicely sized bathroom with marble sink, enormous shower and cheerful Moorish-inspired tiles. Another nice touch: the hotel provided olive oil-based toiletries and plush towels. Other amenities included a hair-dryer, generous wardrobe, English language television channels and mini-bar.

Filled with books and art magazines, tapestries, prints, photographs and antique furniture, the hotel’s common areas are equally inviting. Take the time to explore, and you’ll find plenty of places to curl up and read, a shaded terrace, free Internet access, a bar area with an ‘on your honor’ system, and a screening room decorated with old film posters. The hotel is spotless and well kept throughout.

The 6 EUR breakfast is light – bread, croissants, coffee, orange juice and yogurt – but of exceptional quality. The juice is freshly squeezed, and the bread is local, freshly baked and served with delicious homemade marmalade and preserves.

At just over 100 EUR per night, the hotel was an incredible value and made for one of our most pleasant stays in all of Europe – the perfect romantic retreat.

Our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. Though it’s small, Ronda offers far more than its celebrated bridge, including a Michelin-starred restaurant, spectacular views of the verdant surrounding landscape, and interesting remnants of its Moorish past such as well-preserved Arab baths. Ronda is located in one of the greenest areas in all of Spain, making for breathtaking scenic drives and hikes. It’s also perfectly situated for exploring the nearby ‘Pueblos Blancos’ such as Arcos de la Frontera and Grazalema. The friendly Belgian receptionist recommended a visit to Setenil with its unique troglodyte dwellings.

We arrived in Ronda by train and I called another hotel first but they didn't have a room. Hotel San Gabriel was our 2nd choice and they had a room for the night. I am so, so glad we stayed at the Hotel San Gabriel. It was almost like staying at a B&B yet offering the privacy and convenience of a hotel. People are friendly, helpful and professional; hotel is small, quaint, warm and charming. Beautifully decorated in a classy Spanish flavor. We stayed in a superior room. The location is also perfect. Tucked away a half block from the main street so it's quiet at night but very convenient for seeing the old town sights of Ronda. Perfect location. Several famous people have stayed there. You'll be very pleased at the hotel.

This hotel couldn't have been better placed in the old town. Everywhere was within a few minutes walking distance. Everything worked to our advantage: the friendly and helpful (English-speaking) Hilde who took our telephone booking, showed us where to park (for free) and showed us to our lovely room with fantastic bathroom. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and most spoke excellent English. The breakfast was first-rate: fresh baked breads and croissants, locally sourced honey and preserves, cheese and pate. The honey was so good that we wanted to bring some home so Hilde contacted the supplier (Paco) who dropped some in to the hotel for us on his way to a concert. That's the kind of service they provide at the San Gabriel: they really want every guest to feel at home. There is a comfortable lounge, a cinema and an internet corner so that you can stay in touch if you really need to. I couldn't fault this place. We stayed 5 nights and wondered whether this might be too long. It wasn't. Although you can explore Ronda in a couple of days it's a great base from which to explore the surrounding countryside and when the day trippers go home you have the restaurants to yourself.

What a fantastic hotel to stay in. we could not fault it in any way. The room was superb, great bathroom, great bed & very clean. Location was superb, ideal for walking in to town - only 2 minutes away. On top of all this the Breakfast was excellent - all local produce - pate especially was so tasty!! I would go back to this place again & again. Ronda too was a suprise - much more to it than just the bridge. There are actually 3 bridges!

We have recently returned from a week in Ronda (08 to 15/02/07)and spent our last two nights at the San Gabriel. Previously we had rented an apartment that was totally inadequately heated so this was our shelter from the storm. We were positively toasty here and so were surprised to read the previous reveiwer's comments. The radiator controls were as with British central heating on the heating panels and very easy to adjust.

We were very warmly welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed the ambience of this traditionally Spanish hotel with all its beautiful soft furnishings and wonderful snug sofas. Our bed was very comfortable and romantically draped, the room spacious with well thought out lighting (unlike the EnFrente Arte where we have previously stayed, although a good hotel in many other ways).

Breakfast was simple but very good, using (mostly) local produce and at 6 euros very good value. All in all we were very impressed and found it well above it's class for the standards maintained . Excellent in every way, this is a very special hotel.

Before I review the hotel, I have to mention, that our stay in Andalusia coincided with some of the worst weather this part of the world has experienced over the past 10 years. We had snow, freezing cold, rain, hail, thunderstorms, strong winds and in between a few minutes of sunshine.
I have to agree with most of the previous reviews of this Hotel. There is nothing to complain about this hotel except on thing: Due to the cold weather the room was freezing cold. There was heater/aircon-unit on the wall, but that didn't do much good. Even though they hat radiators in our rooms, the where only turned on sometime during the evening for a couple of hours and then shut down again. When we woke up in the morning the room was ice cold. Taking a shower was no option, because the bathroom was even colder. Other than that it was a perfect stay in a great hotel, with beautiful and romantic rooms (great attention to detail), a great an quiet location, in an interesting town.
