“amazing refurbishment but finish and attention to detail; including hiring the right staff let the place down.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

Well, 1st disappointment this year's travel.

We came back to this Hotel after enjoying our stay in the old colonial style of the place before the re. ferb. and having good service. A lot has changed so I'll list the pros. & cons. To keep it short and informative. We took a room with a terrace and view down into Valley.

pros.
Position, views, amenities; pool & surrounds are lovely, garden is relaxing. Spa & gym, although small are fine. Room was fine; although, read cons. below bed was great and comfortable. Terrace and view just excellent. As a point of note, there was no actual bathroom/showroom and the loo had a part-frosted glass door so for some I could see this as being disconcerting (see pics for all comments). Parking on-site but expensive when you can get it for €9 in town.

Cons.
Staff - not all staff (other than such as Pablo, Raúl, the young man in the cafeteria and the Spa lady, very nice) had learned how to smile! See my comments below regarding the specifics re,. staff.
Booking in - we had booked direct to get the privileges of a free drink, water and early/late booking in/out. We had it all lined up on-line to book and rang to confirm room and the lady offered to take the booking over the phone. She confirmed we would still have all the benefits of booking direct. When we arrived, nothing re. Our booking arranged; took an age and 3 people to book us in and when l mentioned the free-bees, was told bluntly we'd have to wait for those. upshot of this is we only got these late on the 2nd day after us reminding reception twice and having to get our room key cards re-done as we had only been booked in for 1 night after all that, not the 3 we had booked originally.
Staff - The staff; other than the exceptions referred to above, are definitely sub-standard. The big guy serving in the Cafeteria was unwelcoming and frankly rude. After passing us 4 times and about 10 to 15 mins. of us being there he finally acknowledged us with a surly half nod of the head (no smile, no apology for not serving us earlier, just a curt nod of the head. Again, after a further wait he finally came over to our table, again, no smile, no apology for it taking him 20 mins to even speak to us, and, on top of that, when I asked him what ice cream flavours he had said; "I don't know!" "They come from the kitchen". He walked away muttering and at this stage, I'd lost patience. So got up and walked away. Since we couldn't get into our room (the key saga) we had to go to reception and whilst there, I reported the situation to reception where I was informed it was a known problem. Oh, by the way, the day before, there wasn't anyone at the Cafeteria for 15 mins at all! So, moral of the story is, the Hotel missed out on us spending money in the place on 2 occasions.

Since management frequently read reviews on here, can l just say a smile and courtesy to people who are essentially paying staff wages goes a long way! Management can't be there 24/7 so training staff in the basics is essential and being a staff trainer of some national and international Businesses, I can see that this is lacking here in this Hotel, or, some of your staff are totally disregarding your Hotel Policies on dealing with patrons.

Room - For us, actually very nice, although, when it's a double room with double bed for 2 people, why oh why a single chair and, unbelievable, only 1 x bedside table in a 4 **** Hotel. I just don't get it!

There is more that l could say here about finish of the re. ferb. work but the management and staff are not responsible for that but see the example pic. Door to terrace not locking, terrace light not working, toilet seat not fixed properly, etc. , just little niggles but it conveys lack off love and attention to making one's stay a memorable one for the right reasons.

Food - we didn't eat at the hotel so we've scored that as average.

Summary - we were really disappointed with the overall experience and in the light of our recent experiences and reviews of other establishments in Andalucia, sad to meet the negatives we encountered here. We live in Spain because we love ït here, and the Spanish people are great. Our experience at this Hotel on this occasion didn't reflect how lovely they are. So, the moral for the staff here is, smiles and be courteous; it doesn't cost you anything. When you take a booking direct, try and get it right and when you have incentives for booking direct, don't make us beg for them! Even though this Hotel has a perfect location, l don't think we'll be returning again. What a shame.

The Hotel Catalonia Reina Victoria Wellness & Spa is located just a 10 minute walk from the town (including the bull ring and bridge) and the train station is also just 10 minutes away too.

The hotel is finished to a very high standard and the staff are very professional and eager to assist you.

Rooms are very large, light and airy - although some people may be put off by the glass door/walled en suite facilities in the rooms, they are opaque though so you still have privacy.

When it comes to sleep, the beds are extremely comfortable and the blackout curtains provide complete darkness in the room, even when the sun rises.

The outside pool and sunbathing area is well maintained and very tranquil. The spa is a little on the small side, but well equipped - the staff will reserve the spa for you personal use upon request, so you need not let the small size of the spa put you off using the facilities if you think it may get busy.

There is a large terrace and outside bar area which feature waiter call buttons on all tables, so you can be assured of prompt and convenient service - although some of the waiters seems a little grumpy, the quality of service was still very high.

The hotel staff will gladly hold your luggage for you in a secure room after checkout, so if you wish to stay and enjoy the hotel facilities after check out, you don't need to carry your luggage around with you.

We will definitely be staying here again soon.

This hotel is very close to the centre of the town just a five minute stroll which is great. The hotel staff are very helpful and the views of the gorge that the hotel sits on top of are wonderful. The swimming pool is not large but ideal if you just want to cool off. What I found best about the hotel was the way the rooms had been designed. No separate bathroom as such which gave you a lot more light and space. No bath but a wonderful large shower and the set of scales to weigh yourself after you have had a lovely Spainish meal. Mini bar prices were high but if you had a drink in the bar or patio they were normal not inflated 5 star prices which I found a very pleasant change, and they had bubbly available at breakfast for those of us that like a bucks fizz in the morning.
I would certainly go back there again.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a view and balcony so that you can sit outside on those hot warm evenings

We stayed at both the Parador as well as the Reina Victoria this past month while we were in Ronda. Both places were really wonderful. The views were breath-taking and each hotel has its own unique position in the town. But the Reina Victoria, just recently remodeled, was so peaceful and the staff were so exceptional that we really will remember this place for some time to come. The rooms rates were considerably less than the Parador, and yet the swimming pool, the spa, and the terrace restaurant were just fabulous! The staff went beyond the call as a matter of course and they were so friendly and accommodating; we felt very much pampered and spoiled! As much as we enjoyed our stay the Parador, if you have to choose, the Reina Victoria is the place to stay. Not smack in the center of town as the Parador is, and you have to walk a few blocks out of the center of town, but it is worth it! A great place!

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel (Catalonia) Reina Victoria in Ronda May 17 and 18. I concur with all the positive reviews that have recently been posted. We have frequently used Rick Steve’s recommendations on trips to Europe and have not been disappointed. We arrived in Ronda at the train station from Granada (an excellent way to get to Ronda), and took a cab since it was raining. I think it was probably at least a 15 minute walk, possible more on cobblestone streets which is doable if you only have carryon luggage. Also note that the hotel is about a 10-15 walk to downtown. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful and the hotel was quiet, comfortable, and clean. We ate dinner there our first night and had an excellent meal. The breakfast was also excellent. We had a small terrace/balcony off our room but did not get to fully enjoy the view because it was a little cloudy and gloomy while we were in the room. Fortunately, our time touring old/new town and viewing the gorge was pretty decent, but cool. We did not use the pool or spa facilities so cannot comment on that. We departed (for Sevilla) from the bus station, which was a 10 minute walk from the hotel. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Consider paying a little extra for a room with a terrace/balcony (above 1st floor) on the back side...

I found this hotel amazing the rooms are spacious and clean . We had a room with a terrace which was lovely to sit out on and relax. The staff where very nice and the hotel is very short walk to the town. The only downside to the hotel was that the car park is €15 per day and was a bit of a shock as i did not see it on the website or in the reviews that I had read .

Overall a lovely stay :-)

Make sure to get a room with a terrace, the views are amazing. The hotel is very modern, the rooms are spacious. The breakfast was very good. 10 mins walk from the Old Town. All in all, it was worth the money. I would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a room with a terrace.
