“value of money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

Went on a group booking for mon-friday, 5 day package. Overall was pleased. Entertainment was excellent. Food was good with a good choice and cooked well. Staff were fantastic, friendly and helpful. The only down side was the chalets needed updating. They were warm and tidy. We only paid £99 each, what do you expect for all - inclusive?

First of all the majority of the staff were excellent, especially our waiter, Lukas. One member of bar staff had an argument with a customer on two nights out of two, with different customers!! Rooms were awful and smelly but appeared clean. Was talking to one lady who said she was asleep during the night and felt something run down her body in the bed, It was a mouse. Food was tasteless and on both our nights it actually ran out, that includes hot food and salad bar, such a rush too.

Room Tip: Don't bother spending the £15 a night to upgrade. All you get is a newspaper and a cheap bottle...

The isolated Sand Bay Holiday Centre Nr Kewstoke Village is some (5) km north of Weston-Super-Mare, North Somerset in the UK. Guests commute via the M5 Motorway and arrive there by car or by coach. The large free car park at the rear of the complex serves cars, coaches and disabled parking.

Access to the Resort is via a driveway half way along Beach Road. The bottom end of the wide driveway looks onto the Reception that fronts the main complex building.
Beach Road is a narrow coastal lane with holiday and residential villas and bungalows located on the RH side and a high level pedestrian walkway on the LH side (seaside).
The walkway runs approx the full length of the road. Direct access is by climbing high rise steps that run parallel with the narrow road. There are a few more convenient ways of gaining access that are dotted along the road. Walking along the pedestrian way you have the full panoramic view of the beach and sea. There are a few pedestrian benches located along the pathway. You cannot see the beach from road level.
Turning right out of the complex drive there is a bus terminus located (400) metres along Beach Road and a further (300) metres along there is a sole café that is open when their welcome flag is up high above the road. Good quality but the price is down to a captive audience.

We enjoyed a (5) day break at the Centre during the 1st week of September 2013. The excellent weather was warm and sunny although a little chilly early morning. The “Door to Door” holiday package was booked through Plimbley Travel. Everything was done for us we just sat back and had relaxing trip. Minibus pick up with luxury coach connection and an excellent driver that stayed with the Plimbley Guests for the (5) days to take them out on free excursions. The suit cases were waiting outside the chalet when we arrived.

There are (315) single storey studio en suite chalets set in rows all located in the confines of the (17) acres of ground. Some fully refurbished some partly refurbished and the remainder in need of refurbishment.

Chalet No 176 was fully refurbished. New ‘walk in’ shower unit, new wash basin, new WC and tiled floor made the bathroom a delight to use even though in a narrow area.
The main room was brightly decorated including a new carpet. There were (2) bedside cabinets (one new) and (1) wardrobe. Twin beds as booked with mattresses that was a bit uncomfortable. A wall mounted LCD TV provided freeview channels. New double glazed windows were fitted front & back of the chalet. The exterior was re-painted recently. The complete length of this row of (24) chalets appeared to be refurbished to the standard stated. Although our chalet provided cramp conditions it was satisfactory for (2) adults on a (5) stay.

The Sand Bay Complex is a very comprehensive leisure resort. It caters for all guests’ requirements and includes a heated pool, solarium, sauna, spa bath and gym for the energetic. It has a large ballroom, café, TV lounge, gift shop, arcade, snooker & darts room areas. The ground supports playing fields, crazy golf and bowls etc.
The ballroom bar catered for various types of dancing. A resident band, an entertainment team, cabaret and the dreaded bingo. Overall the entertainment was very good. Entertainment was also provided in the Harlequin’s lounge bar for guests that were keen on missing bingo including yours truly. The price of drinks was generally on par with the London rates although discounts were offered on certain brands.

The large restaurant catered for approx (400) guests at one sitting. Breakfast 8.30 am and Dinner 6.00 pm. The “gannets” were queuing at the entrance points at least (15) minutes before opening times. Guests had a choice of waiter service or the self service buffet at the dinner sitting, we opted for waiter service. It was only waiter service at the breakfast sitting. Guests dined at the same table throughout the holiday. Marino from Valencia, Spain, was our excellent waiter. He spoke good English, efficient with a good sense of humour and appreciated our limited Spanish. He was well tipped. The food served, although mainly processed, was good and hot. Plenty of variety with different menu daily at dinner although the processed fish on Friday is not recommended.
Excellent porridge or cereals, full English breakfast with fried bread and toast etc; etc.
Lunch was an option at a reasonable cost. The meal times were well organised and efficient. The food generally was good value and satisfied most guests.

It was adults only during our stay and very popular with the middle aged guests some who came back two or three times a year.
The whole Leisure Resort catered for all age groups throughout the year and was professionally run by efficient and friendly staff.

Holly Bush Hotels Limited trading as Martyn Leisure Breaks runs (4) hotels and the Sand Bay Complex. We wish the group the best of luck in finding a new buyer.

Room Tip: A twin room chalet that has been refurbished with walk in shower is recommended.

Just returned from Monday to Friday break with elderly parents. The whole camp is let down by the tired chalets and particularly the bathrooms. The staff do an excellent job of feeding the visitors en mass each meal time with military precision. The pool area is mucky but with a bit of tlc could be much improved. Overall this is a cheap and cheerful holiday and you need to accept it for what it is.

We have just returned from a 4 day stay at this resort,it was a Spring Jamboree of 60s and Country Music. The entertainment was exceptional and put on by Cloud Nine Promotions. The staff are working under stressful conditions because the resort is up for sale, but this did not affect the excellant service in the restaurant and the bar.The choice of food was good, with Buffet or waiter service. The chalets are basic and need some up dating but clean and comfortable.Overall the breaks that we have spent here have been good value for money this was our 4th one and we have already booked for next year

We have just returned from our latest stay here, enjoyed every minute, meals were good value excellent service from our waiter Matthew, all staff have always been friendly and helpful from ground staff right the way through, Scott Paige is absolutely fantastic singer and entertainment manager the whole team work very hard and Grace who we saw for the first time is a wonderful singer a great addition to the team, yes some of the chalets need a lick of paint, but have never had a dirty one if you have any problems they are happy and quick to sort them out, Surely when away on holiday you don't spend all the time in your chalet it is very good value for the money you pay, we have met many people here that return time and time again over the years, that is the true recommendation for people to take in to account the amount of return trade, cant wait for next visit.

23 of us visited sandbay and all without exception had a great time. we are a whist club and like to play cards every day, the staff were very helpful and found us a place to play. we also enjoyed the entertainment and the food was 1st rate. so the chalets need modernizing especially the bathroom but it was spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable. i think some of the people who critsiize sandbay forget the wonderful value it is for the money.....if they want the ritz, go and pay ritz prices......dont put this greatl place down.
