Owner description: The newly established Elephant Conservation Center is now open, marking a new era for conservation of the Asian elephant within the Lao PDR and offering a unique experience to visitors wishing to contribute towards the preservation of an endangered species. The first of its kind in Laos, the Center, launched in association with conservation organisation ElefantAsia, is not another elephant camp but an innovative approach that combines conservation of an endangered species with eco-tourism.

“What a wonderful experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012

I recently visited the Elephant Conservation Centre in Xaiaboury province in Laos and can only wish I'd gone sooner and stayed for longer! After a quick visit to the Elephant Nature Park north of Chiang Mai in Thailand last year, I was slightly apprehensive of these large animals, but my three day visit to the ECC totally transformed my attitude towards these gentle giants. The elephants are wonderful, the staff are clearly loving the elephants and enjoying their work - no better place to take a few days and enjoy being a part of the elephants' daily life.

The centre is easy enough to get to either from Vientiane (two flights weekly with Lao Air) or Luang Prabang (by bus). The bungalows are very nice and the food they served exceeded all expectations I generally have as a travelling vegetarian. Highly recommend visiting this place, and hope to go back soon myself.

“Trunks Up”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

I have just come back from a wonderful trip to the Elephant Conservation Centre in Xayaboury Province. This is a must if you are interested in elephants, conservation or Lao culture in general. What a magical place. I spent three days riding, feeding, and watching the elephants having their daily bath. I passed my Mahout Training Course with flying colours. The mahouts and staff at the centre are so welcoming and friendly. I was even privileged to see two baby elephants which were only 5 months old - a definite highlight.

It was hard to leave the elephants and all the staff behind so I decided to sponsor an elephant which you can do through Elephant Asia at www.elephantasia.org. This ensures that the wonderful work of everyone at the centre can continue and elephant conservation will continue in Laos. My time at the Elephant Conservation Centre was a highlight of my year of living in Laos. I'll hope to be back next year to celebrate the Elephant festival in February - also a great time to visit - laoelephantfestival.com/

“A totally different elephant centre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2012

Parts of Laos have become pretty touristy by now. But only 3 hours from Luang Prabang is this elephant centre. Its really easy to get to by public bus from the northern bus station in LP. It's so peaceful and gorgeous and off the horrible tourist trail. Accommodation is cute little bungalows or a larger clean, Lao style dorm. The best view is from the sala overlooking the reserviour. They have a number of elephants and at least 3 babies! A really nice place to chill out, meet many locals with amazing stories. You can also chat with all the vets that treat elephants in the area. I highly recommend for a great change. It's a clean, safe, fun place to see the real side of elephant ownership in laos.
