We visited Mudbrick and Waiheke island on our honeymoon, and loved every minute. The vineyard is a short taxi drive from the ferry port. We walked from Oneroa village - not something to recommend! But totally worth it when we got to Mudbrick.
The views across the bay to Auckland are spectacular. We were there for dinner so enjoyed the sunset over the bay while we ate - a really special experience.
We found the staff very friendly and really knowledgeable - we enjoyed our wine tasting and came away feeling like we knew at least a little something about wine! There's a good variety to taste and we both found something to enjoy out on the terrace afterwards. The gardens are beautiful and well-kept, and they're high on the hill so the views really are beautiful. Ask staff to point you in the direction of the path up to top of the hill, where you can get almost 360 degree views of Waiheke Island - as well as peace and quiet
The best part of the visit, by far, was the incredible food we enjoyed in the restaurant, where the waiting staff were also excellent - efficient and considerate, making sure we weren't cold and turning on heaters as the evening drew in.
I can't say too much about the delicious food. Everything was perfectly cooked and really imaginative. There's a good variety on the menu and everything was beautifully presented. The highlight of the meal was the black forest dessert - a deconstructed black forest gateau with black cherry sorbet and crunchy meringue. I don't exaggerate when I say this is the best dessert I've had in my life (I've done a fair bit of research into this claim...!)- it's worth going just for this.
The nice surprise was the fantastic value of the meal. The two of us ate three courses of exquisite food, drank a couple of glasses of delicious wine each and had tea at the end of the meal, in the beautiful and isolated setting for under £150 for the both of us - a pleasant surprise at the end of the meal!
Thank you Mudbrick for a fantastic trip and a meal we're unlikely to forget for a long time. We hope to be back one day!
