“Wonderful, friendly relaxed atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2014

This restaurant experience is outstanding. If you want somewhere to go relax with a nice bottle of wine, friendly staff, gorgeous views with gorgeous food- this is the place for you. This is a personal fave, the menu seems to change so often and each time a dish is added it is delicious! The tempura oyster are among the best I have tried... take me back!

“Great oysters and wonderful cocktails”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

We traveled out to Waiheke Island from Auckland with a group of friends for dinner on a Friday evening. A reservation at the Oyster Inn was mandatory. This place is very popular and it fills up fast so walk-ins don't really have a chance. During the summer months, the Waiheke wedding season, the place is packed at weeks end and over Saturday and Sunday with wedding related events. The moral: book well ahead.

If you are a visitor to Auckland and want something a little different take the 30 minute ferry ride to Waiheke (about NZ$35 return per person) and then a short (3 minute) ride up to Oneroa from the ferry landing. This is the first of the settlements on the Island and the Inn is in the middle of the main street, upstairs in an older building with colonial verandas overlooking Oneroa Bay.

We arrived a little ahead of time and so took up station in the bar. The staff were very accommodating and produced cocktails that all considered were superb. A classic dirty martini was a stunning start to the evening and the ladies enjoyed the mojitos just as much.

Champagne with oysters was the opening gambit for most. The oyster varieties that are available change regularly depending on supply. When we dined there were of three varieties, Tio Point, Marlborough and Bluff. I had half a dozen of each of the Tio Point (served natural with a chardonnay jelly) and the Bluff (served cooked in a tempura batter with dipping sauces). The former were lovely but the Bluffies were let down by a batter which was simply not tempura.

Main courses followed with a number of the party trying the special of Hapuka (NZ Groper) which was just lovely. Desserts were beyond the usual and those who had them were thoroughly sated.

We decamped for the 11 pm ferry back to Auckland feeling that the Oyster Inn had been well worth the visit. In an Island restaurant scene that is dominated by winery eating the Inn provides a nice counterpoint with a good menu, almost New England ambiance, attentive staff and reasonable pricing. Thoroughly recommended.

“Love Fish? Gotta go to this restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014

We were a party of 4 adults and two children (4 yrs and the other 12 months).

The meals are not cheap but they are sensational value so if you can stretch the purse then this is a perfect place for you. The tables are set on a balcony that overlooks the sea, offering a balmy sea breeze to cool off still more, the local pinot Gris luxuriating in the ice bucket. Add a dozen local oysters freshly shucked, followed by blue cod and, if you are me (which of course you're not) then you would be in 7th heaven. We were looked after by Clare who was fun loving and considerate. She described the dishes with so much passion and enthusiasm it made us feel that she should join us at the table.

As you probably can tell, we had a ball at this place and have no hesitation in giving it the strongest recommendation.

Room Tip: We didn't stay at the hotel, merely attended their restaurant.

“Great evening!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

We sat outside on a balmy evening - considering we had left a wet and windy UK only a few days earlier, this was a wonderful experience and helped with our R&R from the flight out.
The selection of food is very good, and we had the fish and chips, and the fish marsala with some delicious Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling/Pinot Noir. We had very attentive service and enjoyed some very funny banter with our server which really made the evening for us. A very comfortable restaurant that we would highly recommend.
