“Warm and friendly welcome in very pleasant homestay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2006

Wonderful homestay with very fast broadband wireless internet connection! which lets face it is important! Great hosts who are more than happy to turn up the large fire in the guest lounge, regale you with information about new zealand and provide a feast of a breakfast! Myself and my father stayed for one night whilst on the way to Queenstown and the room was very clean and comfortable.

If your enthusiastic there are horses to feed, 2 very friendly dogs to befriend and even some feline companions about the place. Do not worry if you are not a pet person as all furry companions are kept away from the guest accomodation areas.

Whilst the homestay is not in the centre of Hokitika it is located very conveniently between Greymouth and only about a 5 minute drive from Hokitika township centre itself. There is access to the beach and bush nearby and route 6 the main road through new zealand is just off the turning for the homestead.

Awatuna is easy find, set in beautiful gardens and has a decent webpage. I recommend that you contact the hosts directly for a personal touch for your stay as they are more than willing to accomodate any requests, or deal with any queries.

  • Liked — clenliness, friedliness and accessibiltiy
  • Disliked — hokitika is one of those very small townships in new zealand and not somewhere i would spend my whole vacation. fine for passing through though! especially on way to tranzalpine rail link

The owners are an interesting couple; the wife being quite nice though rather quiet; but, the husband being very much taken with doing the talking and telling stories.
As for the place itself, the rooms are clean and adequate with clean bathrooms ensuite.
The general air of the place is rather low key in terms of outdoor maintenance. That is to say, when you drive in you will see some old axles and/or crankshafts here and there, along with unstacked piles of cut wood (unless it's already been burned) and so forth. It doesn't make for a great initial impression. The home is relatively new, a rebuild after a disastrous fire. The siding was originally quite attractive raw wood as seen in pictures at the website, but now part has weathered and part has not, so it looks sort of untended, as well. Too bad a good sealant wasn't put on the wood initially, or perhaps it was but wasn't done again . . . or maybe it just needs a power wash. All in all, it's a bit funky, though as stated earlier, the rooms are just fine and each one has a nice French door to the outside. The garden has nice potential and nice bones, but is also a little untended. Not bad at all for a short stay. Food prepared is pretty expensive for what was offered. Rooms aren't cheap, either. We thought after driving around that if one is bound and determined to stay near Hokitika (there are better options), perhaps the Best Western with individual duplex cabins and a domesticated animal exhibit and play area for kids, might be a better option for those who prefer "shipshapedness." It's just before town on the right driving south. Awatuna is pretty average for an above average price.
