“Cool looking place, but ...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

The hotel is situated on water. Each room is just a small house sitting on water. Houses, the reception and the dining areas are connected by the wooden boardwalks and hanging bridges, and when it rains, they get wet and become slippery. The houses are quite small and there are ants all over the place inside. The showers are quite difficult to manage as you can't set the temperature right away - either it will be very hot or very cold. The food at the hotel is quite mediocre, and the service is very slow. Avoid meat dishes since the meat is not of a good quality and you will spend time chewing it, but the fish snook is very good. The salsa sauce served at the table is good, but make sure you get the green and not the brown one. Pretty much you will feel like Shrek in the swamp staying at this hotel. Since the hotel is on water, it has lots of blood sucking insects so be prepared, and also bring a flashlight with you because there are no lights above the bridges/boardwalks and you don't want to fall off of them at night.

There are two ways to reach the lodge by road from Rio Dulce or by free boat which leaves from underneath the bridge. The boat is more fun and you arrive at reception where the friendly staff welcome you. There are 40 rooms of varying standard spread throughout the complex connected by wooden boardwalks. Some front the marina others are scattered along the river and throughout the wetland, most are built over the water with some on the hillside in the delightful garden . All rooms are comfortable, clean and screened with a choice of types, fan, air conditioned, double, singles, with or without bathrooms, dormitory and even though there is water all around there are few mosquitos. The food in the restaurant is healthy, delicious well presented and a welcome change from the usual Guatemalan rice, beans, plantains and fried chicken. There is pool with spa, kayaks, jungle walk with hanging bridges and an on site tour guide.

We stayed in one of the bungalow rooms and were fortunate to effectively have the place to ourself since neither of the other two rooms were occupied. Breakfast was excellent. Lunch and dinner good. Staff good.

We arrived by car and parking is really strange.
Should park in a remote parking lot and walk to the hotel on the suspension bridges over the swamp. , Would not recommend doing it at night!
Rooms also connected with the strange and dependent pathways. Mostly without a shower room.
There is a private marina and a ride into town with a motorboat.
It has a pool and a restaurant with some nice dishes.
Nearest town is not nice, and not recommended to walk there.
We were not happy with the place and is recommended only for those looking for a different place to stay a few days.
I think the place is for those who coming with a private yacht and not suitable for average tourist.
The price of the room actually relatively expensive for the area.
Rooms very clean but the service level is average.

Room Tip: I think you better take room with shower

I came here with friends on a G Adventures Tour and fell in love with the place. It is so peaceful and natural whilst remaining full with plenty to do and a lovely pool! The lodge offers a monkey sunrise jungle kayak tour which I highly recommend as it is really fun. There wasn't a single bug in our room which overlooked the lovely (not smelly and not buggy) swamp when you opened the back door! The swamp had little fish and turtles in! Overall the stay was very pleasant and the place is gorgeous, wouldn't go back to Rio Dulce without visiting again!

Room Tip: The rooms are all named after different birds but would recommend a room nearer the front where all...

I did not stay at the Hotel though, I have stayed in the past. This review is solely for the walking tour the hotel offers.

Our tour guide was Lucy, she was really great. We decided to do something different this time around in Rio Dulce, so we took this tour. Lucy was very friendly and took the time to explain somethings along the way. The tour was very informative and fun. We went through some mangroves, walked on some high hanging bridges, went through deep jungles and walked to a tower that overlooks all of rio dulce and lake Izabal. At the end of the tour we took a plunge in a man made natural pool that was very refreshing.

The tour is about an hour and a half and it explores the Hacienda Tijax. If you are staying there, I highly recommend. There is a nominal fee for the tour but well worth it.

Room Tip: Take the walking tour!

Apart from the spiders that may take solace in your cabin, the place is a favorite. Fantastic pool, a multitude of activities ranging from kayaking to yoga, and great food and bar. The staff was really friendly and helpful! Definitely recommend Lucy's yoga class up at the Tower!
