“Excellent carvery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

First visit on a Sunday. It was was busy which was a good sign. The food was lovely and there was a choice of 5 vegetables which tasted fresh and not overdone. The roast potatoes were the best I've tasted in a restaurant and were almost as good as my husband's. Service was a little slow but the staff did apologise for any delays. The only down side was that the snug where we ate was cold. I would definitely revisit but would want a table in the main part which was warmer.

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014 via mobile

It didn't start well as we were told the advertised (huge sandwich board out the front) 2 course lunch for £10.95 hadn't started back after Christmas yet (it's the 21st today!) The food was edible but chicken was over cooked, dry and chewy. It was served on a doorstep sandwich which was dry and difficult to eat. When it came to dessert, firstly one of our choices weren't available then we were told although the dessert had been made fresh at the weekend (it's now Tuesday!) the chef wasn't happy with it so we had to choose agin. To add insult to injury we were charged extra for the ice cream despite the menu stating desserts were served with ice-cream, cream or custard. I am in two minds to contact trading standards for false advertising. I will not be visiting again and would recommend you try one of the many other pubs in the area!

“Bit of a let down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014 via mobile

Been recommended to try this pub/restaurant as it was in fairly new hands.
Made a lunchtime visit and things looked promising as a large advertising black board promised "probably the best chef in the area".
Got a warm welcome to a nice old style pub with a good atmosphere.
Looked like at least two large party groups being served in the two rear restaurant areas and all seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Ordered two drinks and two coffees and when the coffees arrived both cups had lipstick around the rims. Sent one back but my other guest couldn't wait for another so wiped the cup with his napkin.
Ordered two special sandwiches, one baked potato and one scampi meal with hand cut Chips.
Very disappointing as the bread was very dense and dry with a hard crust, not stale but not nice. The chilli on the baked spud was to stiff with not enough sauce to go with the potato making the meal dry.
The scampi was very oil laden and looked like it had been cooked at a low temperature or the fryer had been overloaded. The hand cut Chips were really just wedges, nothing special at all.
Think pub may have ended up busier than expected on our visit so probably not a good example of what can really be offered so will probably return to give them another try but feel we got the 2nd or sous chef and not the best chef in the area.

“Friendly Welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

Arranged to meet a retired work colleague at Noon at the Star inn at Matfield, for a catch-up chat. We were welcomed by the staff. After getting our local brewed beers we sat at a table and perused the menu, which displayed a tempting variety of dishes. We also looked at the specials board, but as we were just in for a lunch time break, decided on a light small option. Log fires were burning in the two fireplaces, giving a lovely old world warmth to the pub. The hosts were friendly, the food was excellent, and we were sorry to have to leave in such a short time. But as the saying goes we will be back. Give it a go!

“Excellent value friendly pub!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013

Have eaten here a few times of late. The carvery is nice (and I am not generally one for a carvery), with a number of fresh veg choices, good selection of meat and side dishes. The specials' board dishes are really good, have had the calves liver (and was, quite rightly, asked how I would like it cooked). The pork belly is very good too as are the fish cakes. Generous portions. Roaring fires are a lovely bonus at this time of year. Staff helpful and friendly. A nice friendly, unpretentious village pub with character.
