You won't find much Cockney rhyming slang in this Queen Vic, and there are no buxom barmaids, but it is, nonetheless, a haven for British, and other, ex-pats. We are here in Amman on a "visa run" from Saudi Arabia, and to be able to go to a pub and have a legitimate beer is something of a revelation after the dryness, in more ways than one, of Saudi. Food-wise, this is very much pub fare, with fish and chips, curries, chicken and chips, various salads, all on the extensive menu. The portions are large - my wife and I occasionally share one dish, and the quality is as good as any British pub's meals. A range of beers are available, but only one on draught, Amstel, which is a common feature in most Amman pubs. The staff are attentive, friendly and efficient, and their English is very good. There are several TVs, mostly showing football, and the background music tends to feature the stars of the British 60s,like Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey (which is rather uplifting for this Welsh traveller). There is, of course, a downside, and that is the price one pays for enjoyment in the Middle East. Happy Hour lasts from 6pm to 8pm and we try to fit our drinking into this period, as the full price of an Amstel is 4.45 JD (£4). The Happy Hour price is 2.65 JD, which is still not cheap. Wine is also available at reduced price during Happy Hour (@2.4JD), and the local wine, Mount Nebo, is very palatable. A range of spirits is also available, and are expensive. The food, too, is not cheap, ranging from approximately 4JD to 10JD, with most being around 6 or 7JD. Of course one expects prices like this in the UK, but not in Jordan.A word of warning - the prices on the menu do not include 10% service charge, nor 16% GST, and this can be something of a shock when the bill arrives. However, the pub has a nice and friendly atmosphere, the food is good and it is a very pleasant way to spend an hour or two (preferably during Happy Hour) of an evening. One downside (at least for us non-smokers) - Jordan has not yet gotten around to banning smoking in public places.
