“Perfect honeymoon hideaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

Ras Kutani is such a lovely spot, the staff are so welcoming, the food is delicious and it is in the most beautiful location. The perfect place for a honeymoon or romantic trip. A true gem! I can't wait to go back.

We went back to Ras Kutani last weekend (8 of us this time) and had a great time, as usual. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and - thanks to everyone there - they arranged for our son to celebrate his 11th birthday with balloons and cake and have a birthday dinner with other kids who happened to be there as well. Service delivery, food, ambiance and staff as good as it gets. Fantastic. Can't wait until we go again.

Room Tip: The Hill House is great for families, and Suites 1 and 2 for a romantic stay, as they have their own...

We arrived with stomach upsets from ten days on safari. Lana and Marc made us welcome and the chef offered less spicy variations on the set meals to help us recover. They set up a table on the beach for our first dinner, and on the deck by the lagoon another evening. They did everything to make us feel special. We were there for three relaxing days starting with a wake-up call with tea and cookies in the hammocks on our veranda to leaving with a nightcap illuminated by the milky way.

We has a standard cabin. Close to the beach and not too close to the bar and restaurant. Massive comfortable bed (actually two doubles side by side). Castaway chic.

What wasn't perfect? The hotel is a long trip from Dar, so don't plan on day trips to the big city. Not really a problem as the location makes you lazy. Watch the monkeys and chill out.

Dear Hugh54

Firstly, so sorry to hear about your stomach upsets - hope you are both better now!

Thank you for your lovely review - I love the phrase "castaway chic" - Ras Kutani is exactly that - barefoot luxury! Its a wonderful place to kick back and relax - even though there is snorkellign equipment, boogie boards, kayaks and massages available - after a busy safari circuit more guests relish teh opportunity of lting back in one of their hammocks with a cool cocktail!

And lovely to hear our camp managers made you feel so welcome and special -that standard of impeccable, intimate service is in every one of our camps throughout southern Tanzania - so every guest has an extra special holiday

Come back and see us soon!

This was the first stop on our honeymoon and we had three nights to unwind after our wedding. It was the prefect place for us.

The staff were awesome, really took the time to get to know you and talk to you individually. Lana (one of the managers) made a real effort but same applies to all the staff who served us. We stayed in one of the standard cottages it was excellent - apart from maybe too hard a bed but it is HUGE. We loved the rattan floors and open aspects of the room, just instantly relaxed you. Never wore anything on my feet for three days except when we did the walk to local village (recommended).

Not a whole heap to do but that's the idea. Eat, sleep, eat, drink, sleep, eat. We had a great massage one morning and did a bit of bodyboarding. The setting beside the lagoon and beach is stunning and it's hard to think you're only 30 odd km from Dar. We were also v lucky the first day we arrived as turtles were hatching from a nest in front of the resort and we watched 20 odd little turtles hatch out and make a dash for the sea - part of the eco work the hotel tries to support.

Food was excellent - brilliant grilled fish lots of the time for lunch and we had a Tanzanian BBQ one night. Top it off with a surprise chanpagne dinner on the beach on our first night that the staff arranged and it was a great start to our honeymoon.

Dear AndyLisa2012

Thank you for reviewing Ras Kutani - and congratulations on your marriage! We were delighted to read your comments on your stay with us and it sounds like you really got into our bare foot luxury state of mind!

So pleased you managed to see a hatching - a very unique, intimate experience watching those little turtles make their first journey down to the sea. Thanks to SeaSense, a fantastic organisation who protect these wonderful creatures and ensures this activity is available for generations to come - two of our staff at Ras Kutani have also been trained to help the nesting and hatching in the area.

We hope the rest of your holiday was as relaxing and enjoyable and you returned home with plenty of memories from your time in Tanzania - come back and see us soon - perhaps on your wedding anniversary!

We only had one night to escape from Dar es Salaam, however from the moment of arrival to the time we had to reluctantly leave, we felt as if we were truly in relaxation mode. Anything we needed, or thought we might need was catered for, food was great and the staff made us feel that this time was ours to enjoy. We would recommend this place to anyone, understated 5 star!

The suites are recommended, you get your own plunge pool and sun bathing area in total privacy

Room Tip: Any of the suites, away from the beach but the added facilities are fantastic.

This was our third stay at a Selous Safari Company property, having arrived from Selous Safari Camp and Jongomero Camp for the final leg of our honeymoon. The service and location was up to the standards set by the previous properties, but we were disappointed with the quality of our room.
The site is set on a very quiet and beautiful white sandy beach, framed by a peaceful and lush fresh-water lagoon. A hundred metres along the beach, just 20m off the shore is a wrecked ship, ideal for snorkelling. Sun-loungers and shades are brought onto the beach at request, and there are never more than a few people on it at any time.
The service was impeccable. The management, waiters, room service and other assistants were very friendly and professional. The food was delicious, really amazing seafood dishes, although non-seafood alternatives were available. The cocktail menu was also great, the infamous Dawa being a popular refreshing treat whilst relaxing on the beach. There were a few nice surprises organised by the staff too, but we'll let you discover that for yourself!
The resort masseuse was very good, a great asset to a relaxing beach location. We took the opportunity to visit the local village, including the school and the clinic, which I highly recommend as it was a very interesting and humbling experience. The walk through the forest was also very interesting, where we spotted the rare Colobus monkeys.
Based on TripAdvisor advice we booked a suite, specifically requesting suite 1 due to the comments we had read. We were given suite 4, and whilst I didn't see suite 1 I can only assume it is significantly better, as we were a little disappointed with our accommodation. Whilst we did appreciate the privacy of the private plunge pool, the standard lodges benefit from a better beach-side location (as opposed to the 2 minute walk up a steep hill to the suites) and from a relaxing hammock. The concrete furniture in the suite was especially off-putting, particularly when compared to the beautiful artisan furniture in the other sister camps at Selous and Jongomero. Don't jump onto the day bed, your knees will plough straight through the thin mattress and onto the concrete underneath - a hammock would have been perfect here! Worst of all was the bathroom, with a poorly-fitted toilet and sink combination straight from my Grandmother's house. To top it off, the shower floor had been tiled such that the water flowed away from the drain, causing the area to flood.
In summary, I would recommend Ras Kutani due to its service and beautiful location, but I really can't recommend paying a significant amount extra to gamble on getting a nice suite, the standard lodges are just fine.

Room Tip: I can't recommend that you pay for a suite, ours was disappointing, as described in the main rev...

Dear Angloshot

Thank you very much for your review on Ras Kutani - it was wonderful to hear your thoughts on the wonderful location, cocktails, food, masseuse and fantastic service we offer at our lodge - we will surely pass this on to our staff - so thank you!

In reference to your thoughts on our suites - we apolgise if they were not what you expected. With our suites we try and offer peace and tranquility by perching them on the hill - to really attain that feeling of isolation from others - but also to benefit from the fabulous views and sea breezes. The suites are significantly bigger than the cottages, situated at beach level - with larger verandas to relax on and a private plunge pool with sunloungers. The polished concrete furniture is traditional to the coastal region on Tanzania, specifically Zanzibar. In all our camps we try and offer a unique stay and that includes a change in decor for each camp. Thank you for your suggestion on thicker mattresses on the day bed - we are currently upgrading the soft furnishings in the suites so hopefully we'll have no more bruised knees in the future! The upgrade is also going into the bathrooms (this applies to both suites and cottages).

Thank you again - constructive criticism is helpful to us so we can improve our service and make sure all holidays are exceptional.

Dear Gatsby 2012

Thank you for your review - we appreciate both positive and negative comments so we can better our service - sadly your review is fairly short and unsubstantiated. Strangely though your comments are not dislike TanyaS's post - so perhaps you would like to refer to the comments I made below.

Future guests, who are reading this review - please keep in mind that we offer a very bespoke boutique beach lodge - as you can see from the 72 out of 75 reviews rated Excellent / Very Good Ras Kutani is perfectly blissful for most but perhaps its not suitable for all and that is why we always encourage guests to do as much research as possible before travelling - to ensure they have the very best of holidays.
