“Overall a lovely relaxing holiday!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

We booked a last minute holiday for the second week in August and after spending hours searching for a holiday that fitted into our requirements we found the Sun Club El Dorado. I had booked it and then read the relevant reviews for the property and after some were saying it was a waste of money and like going to Butlins I was a little disheartened. We arrived in the early hours of the morning and after a short reception check in were shown to our bungalow. It was a small and basic room, which the hotel had given in its own online description but was lovely and clean. The hotel itself is situated and built into a cliff side and all holiday bungalows are sloped towards the cliff so probably not ideal for wheel chairs or people with poor mobility, but for us it was fine. It was a large fully inclusive facility with several large swimming pools, activities from a fabulous team throughout the day including: archery, rifle and pistol shooting, pool activities, football, volley ball, horse riding and many more with children's clubs and activities running throughout the day. Food and drink were served nearly all the time as well with plenty on offer for all taste. This is an all inclusive only resort so in main season there is potentially going to be some queuing for food and drink but to be honest this is a matter of minutes. Overall a lovely holiday with plenty to do, would definitely go again!

Just returned after a fab week. This was our second stay. This time we were in one of the refurbished studios with amazing views from the balcony. Stayed with 2 kids 12 and 8. Plenty for them to do at zero cost. This truely is all inclusive. Both kids had an hours tennis lesson with a coach for free. The going rate is £25 in the uk! Food was buffet style and was great. Plenty of choice. Yes there are queues but they move fast. Everywhere is clean and soap in all the toilets see an earlier review. Yes it is mainly french and german guests there. But if you want to be with all brits then stay at home or book through jet2 or thomsons. For us we prefer less brits as it widens the experience for the kids. My eldest now has a good friend in germany. Remember this is not 5* but for us it represents 5* value. We will be going back for sure. None of us wanted to come home.

I read the reviews after I had booked and paid for the holiday and I was dreading it... yes the rooms were tired but they were clean and the cleaners were in most days. The staff were brilliant, there was a lot of choice at meal times (it got a bit samey towards the end of our stay). The evening entertainment was great. I disagree that it was slanted towards the Germans and French and we loved the fact that it was miles from anywhere. The views were stunning...we did not have a view from our room but I recommend that you spend a little more for one.

Totally shocked at how the place is revolved round the French and Germans who actually think they own the resort !!! Screaming at kids in the pool because they are playing about having fun !! Pushing people in the restaurant to get their dinner when we had to que !! If you don't have a towel on your sun lounger by 9am forget sunbathing and even at that these people remove them anyway !! The children's clubs are revolved around them too so our children didn't attend them for this reason , the location is very out of the way with no cash line on site so you have to walk for around an hour or get the bus , the entertainment team were fantastic at night time something different every night but some of it really not for children a wee bit raunchy !! The food was ok but be prepared to que and fight for it !! If your not fast it's all put away 15 mins before its actually due to finish !! The pools are very busy at times ,hire a car if possible cause you will get bored and hire a fan on check in youll need it !!!Overall it's ok but we won't be going back we were there for 10 days but were ready to go home on the 7th day .

Avoid this hotel at all costs. Sub standard rooms, mediocre food, in the middle of nowhere, difficulty getting subbed unless you are up,ready to put your towels down as soon as pool opens. I have been a frequent visitor to basic Greece it is luxury compared to what this place ties to pass off as bedrooms. Avoid the "b" rooms, they are tiny, grimy, rundown and smelly. Their superior rooms Re not much better. Beds really uncomfortable and squeaked whenever I moved, didn't lead to the best sleep ever.

The food leaves a lot to be desired. School meals in a run down canteen sums it up. Not only was the food mediocre but we had to queue for dinner every night and then got jostled and pushed around at the food counters. Food was mostly catering for our European neighbours.

Wasn't the friendliest of places. One nation n particular should be ashamed of their fellow countrymen they were a bunch of bullies and that was the adults, their children were just spiteful and took a lot of watching. The whole atmosphere became friendlier when more brigs and Belgians arrived.

The entertainment team worked hard and they did well in their efforts keeping guests entertained.

Resort is inThe middle of nowhere and you either stay on the resort or take buses into Arenal or Palma. Beach in Arenal is well worth a visit and Palma is a beautiful city.

Would I return to this resort, not likely - wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Room Tip: Avoid "b" rooms

My boyfriend and I booked 4 days at Sunclub El Dorado, and only after the booking did I start to read other people's reviews....and I was terrified! They was all "rude staff", "bad food" "full of germans and ants". I was so afraid we were going to go, and hate every waking minute of it. And honestly, we had a brilliant time.
We arrived, were given a map and key to our room (a B room) and off we went. We knew from the reviews that the room wasn't going to be big, and it wasn't, but there was only 2 of us for 4 days (3 nights) and we didn't need any more. We just pushed the beds together to make a double and, having assessed the "wardrobe" kept our clean clothes in the suitcases which we stashed under the beds and used the wardrobe as a giant dirty clothes basket. The bathroom was miniscule, but big enough for what we needed. Yes, it had ants, but we didn't see any in the bedroom at any point, and ants can't swim, so we didn't worry about them, and they didn't bother us at all.
First things first, we swim-suited up and headed to the pool. The first one we found was the bottom pool, it's big, it's clean, surrounded by loads of chairs, sunloungers and tables. When we went the bar right next to the pool wasn't open, but it wasn't far to run up the stairs and go to the main bar upstairs. It was never long to wait at any of the bars, and, with the exceptional of the Slushies which take some time to be ready after turning the machine on, they were never short of anything they'd got.
The restaurant/cafeteria is huge and always had lot on offer. There were always at least 3 "mains" on offer, along with a massive selection of salad, vegetables and often 2 forms of potato. I'm a slightly fussy eater, but even if I ruled out all of the "mains" there was still plenty of choice, and we never went hungry - on a couple of occassions there was so much good food on offer that both my boyfriend and I went round twice, and had to talk ourselves out of going round a 3rd time!
The Ents team were everywhere, and tried hard! It was quite hit and miss - the daytime stuff was brilliant, I'm not a great joiner-inner, but even I was up there throwing sponges at the staffs faces, or trying to catch tennis balls in a plastic cup - but the evening Ents drove us out of the bar on 2 nights so we sat on the bar patio getting quietly (and not so quietly) drunk with the other holidayers - everyone was fabulous, there wasn't anyone we met that we didn't get on with, and we made several friends.
We discovered that the bottom pool is the favourite for kids about 4+ and was the one with the Ents teams, the middle pool was either empty or absolutely full of kids under 6, but was the closest to a bar, and the top pool was almost exclusively adults and much more secluded, and with some stunning views. There was one very small child (6 months?) with both parents when we were there but the next youngest was about 16, so depending on what sort of mood you were feeling you could choose the pool accordingly.
And if collapsing by/in the pool isn't what you want, there was always lots else on offer, with a big information board on site which was updated every day with what was happening where, and the Ents team touring the lower pool and bar area and letting you know the options available.

Basically, everything was awesome, we were never bored, or hungry, or feeling ignored, or anything like that, and the whole trip was hilarious and I'd go back tomorrow if i could!
One thing that should be mentioned at this point is that when we went, it was 30-35* every day, and the resort was only at about 1/7 capacity - this meant that you could be outside all day every day, from the minute you woke up to the minute you went to bed. There was lots of room, always an empty chair, sunlounger, table, and always space in the pool....the idea of the resort full to capacity (as one of the ents team told me it would be a few weeks after we left) doesn't sound so appealing.....in fact it sounds slightly frightening, and very, very crowded.

For what we paid, it was a fantastic mini-break. For that money in the UK you'd be staying in a leaky tin shack somewhere that makes Mablethorpe took fancy, eating soggy chips every meal. Yes it was basic, no it doesn't matter.
On our very last night we passed a family who'd only just arrived, and I heard the woman say "this place is a dump, I wish we'd never come" and it made me simultaniously annoyed and disappointed. Be open-minded and accepting about it, it's a nice place if you're willing to over-look the odd broken tile or feral cat, no-one's asking you to live there, just make the most of it and have fun!

And for all of the reviewers who said it's small, dirty, dated and disgusting, congratulations. They're completely renovating the whole place, making it a 5* resort by next summer. The price will double, minimum, probably more, and the fabulous, slightly scutty, cliff-top resort will be gentrified, just like you wanted, and completely out of reach to the masses.

After a disappointing start to the the holiday where they were overbooked and could not give us the superior bungalow we originally booked and were put into a tiny room i was not looking forwad to the rest of the week. However once We were transferred to our bungalow the next morning and the management were apologetic and gave us suitable compensation the holiday began!
I cannot praise the staff enough from the maintainance staff to the bar, dining and entertainment staff. Each individual was friendly, helpful and would all go over and beyond their duties to ensure everyone enjoyed their holiday. Although we did not send our children to the children's care club I observed the staff in action and would be happy to send them there as the level of care they gave to each child was amazing! The staff are also very talented, with every member being able to speak a number of languages fluently and deliver entertainment shows out of this world every evening.
There was only one member of staff that had a poor attitude, which was the blond receptionist. She blatantly lied to us the day we arrived about our accommodation and showed no warmth in her approach to any customer. She should be placed in a room away from customer services!
Food and superior bungalow was great also.
There is no reason to leave the resort as there is so much to see and do there, however the main town and beach are only a short bus trip away.
We would return again!

Room Tip: Choose superior bungalow or studio apartment.
