Great location would have to be top reason for choosing this hotel, we've stayed just about everywhere else over the last 20 years and did stay here many moons ago when it was the Napia Star until it's refurb several years ago when it was renamed the Plaza. WHAT a refurb it was.....it's truly lovely inside and the rooms are excellent too....albeit not the one we had, but more of that later!
We had REALLY bad issues with the swipe keycards, which resulted in us walking 100's of yards back and forth to reception trying to sort or waiting in the corridor for maintenance to let us into our room. In the end we refused to accept yet another keycard (number 9 !!!) so they relented and gave us a regular key which served it's purpose well unlike the [--] keycards......note to Plaza management - It's a nice idea and a little upmarket touch but not so good if the damn things never work !!
Plenty of parking, with the main entrance being somewhat hidden on Makarious Avenue, there's a barrier system and intercom in operation so you don't end up with non residents using the car parking. Reception area and back of the Liquid bar area is fabulous very funky and modern. Check in was breeze despite it being 4am. We were helped with our bags by a porter and shown to our room which was in the far right hand corner of the square shaped atrium style to the rooms. We hadn't upgraded to a pool view as we didn't see the extra expense worth it but we did pay extra for a superior room. This meant we got a kettle, fridge and all coffee/tea & milk and guest toiletries included and the all neccesary aircon.
The room was large with 2 single beds, a large sofa, large TV, double patio doors, large balcony and average bathroom with bath & shower. Plenty of wardrobe space and a large dressing table. Main gripe here was the utter lack of plug sockets....we had ONE spare to use, unplugging the TV or fridge wasn't an option as it would have involved moving heavy furniture. The lighting wasn't fabulous either and it was quite a dull light, that could be because we looked out onto a brick wall and small garden area....and of course the CHURCH & it's BELL Tower !!
They really ought to mention that bell tower and the effect it can have on the back rooms as we had. We were first awoken on Saturday morning at 7.10am, we were so close we thought we were in the bell tower, we almost fell out of our beds the noise was sooo loud. However the bells only lasted about 10 minutes and then the mosque started up and the prayers being said through a loud speaker directly facing our room.....we had to laugh about it or we would have cried. This happened 4 times during an 10 days holiday so not the end of the world but a warning would have been very welcome. Next time we stay we'll be requesting a differently located room for sure.
The staff were very friendly in general, especially ther night porter and the pool bar staff. Breakfast was an excellent affair with a huge choice and the best coffee machine ever. The range was enormous, from cold meats, pastries, cereal, full english, yoghurts, cakes, fruit......the list was endless. Again only gripe would be that we're on holiday and I can't believe how many hotels finish breakfast service so early at 10am, however it was good enough to get us out of bed every day bar 1. There's an inside area to eat or an lovely outside area above the bar area.
We did eat twice from the pool snack bar area and found the snacks to be really nice and not too expensive....although the soft drinks were pretty overprices as were ice creams etc. The pool area was pretty large with lots of sunbeds, it wasn't too crowded when we first arrived but by the end of our holiday when more guests had arrived it was pretty crammed full with little space or beds to be found at midday. Pool towels are provided FOC from the gym reception and you can change them for new one's as and when you desire, you then hand them in and get your tickets back to return to reception.....note if you don't do this they'll charge you for the towels!
We spent most of our days out & about enjoying all our favourite beaches on the East of the island in our hire car. The odd day we did spend time at the pool there was plenty going on in the form of games and volleyball organised by the anamation team at the hotel. We only drank in Liquid Bar at the front of the hotel in the evenings and didn't stay for dinner or evening entertainment so can't comment on either.
One small quibble with the aircon.....I suspect they have one of those autoair freshner systems built into the main aircon unit to emit pleasant fragrances throughout the rooms. However these need to be changed regularly or they begin to have the opposite effect.....and the Plaza had this issue unfortunately, the system smelt of stale urine when it was switched on and this was I'm sure only down to a change of fragrance filter. We did report this at reception and again on nour feedback form, hopefully they'll investigate.
We will most certainly be back at the Plaza next year, in fact I'm not sure we'd go elsewhere now as the location was so good and the rooms more tham adequate. We'll just be sure to remember the niggles we encountered this time and hopefully not have to endure them now we know what's what.
